Fall Shoes for Men Match Trend
Toward Lighter Wearing Apparel

They've taken a tip from men's
ready-to-wear. Gone are the days
when a man bragged of the
weight of his winter tweeds and
flannels. Now the lighter weight
fabrics are the thing. He lives
In an atmosphere of heated cars,
heated trains, heated home and
office, and men's woolens have
met the trend with a rich array
of handsome fabrics woven to
suit his way of life.
Lines in ready-to-wear have
slimmed to give the ew, trim
more youthful silhouette. Gives
a man a much smarter, younger
look as he goes about his busi
ness and social activities.
Shoes this Fall are in com
plete accord. Leathers have been
growing steadily lighter in
weight, more supple on the foot.
The Continental influence shows
up markedly in slim lines of
elegance in the new shoes for
business and dress wear. They're
young, smart, keyed to the
clothes he is wearing. A far cry
from the heavy Winter footwear
of only a few seasons back.
Scores Big Success
The low-line shoe, introduced
last Spring was a big step in the
direction of the lighter, softer
look in shoe fashions, and scored.
an immediate success with men
of all ages. Originally designed
as a warm weather shoe fashion,
it proved so easy on the foot and
the eye that it is being contin
ued in many new Fall patterns.
However there are variations
of the top line to suit all tastes.
Some men prefer the conven
tional top with their regulation
five and six-eyelet town oxfords
while still wearing the low top
In more informal shoe fashions.
And there is the new mid-low
topline in three or four-eyelet
bluchers, slightly less formal
than the regulation oxford, but
with more of a town air than the
two - eyelet casual. For the early
Fall season, the popularity of the
low line shoe 'seems to be as
sured.
Streamlined simplicity- is the
keynote in Fall shoe design. In
the basic five and six-eyelet ox
fords the straight tip, stitched or
folded continues to be a popular
pattern and also the finely de
tailed straight tip with medal
lion, with no foxing or perfora
tion on the vamp.
The wing-tip promises to be
more popular this Fall,' stream
lined, with lighter detailing.
Very smart, the Blucher wing
tips, swept back in longer slim
mer lines, and the dressy wing
tip Bals. U wing types in heavier

are a feature in Bluchers and
Bals.
Favorite All Around
The plain toe Blucher con
tinues to be a favorite all-around
shoe fashion, and the plain toe
Bal, with heavy sole and welting,
on the new Continental lines is
a big favorite with the school
and college set. A service shoe
with anew smart air. In tiie same
category is the moccasin type
of shoes, either plain toe with
raised seams or wing-tips, reg
ular or U is a basic everyday
fashion.
Originally a casual fashion the
younger set has adopted the tas
sel moc as a dress shoe. Tops
in black, but popular also in
brown and newest in cordovan.
The new espadrille type of slip
on, minus tassel, is also catching
on as a smart young-set shoe
fashion.
In colors, black and the dark
brown tones are in the lead.
Charcoal is still a feature. But
following the trend in men's
suitings, there is some interest in
medium tones in leathers. Tradi
tional browns are basic, although
the darker shades hold the fash
ion spotlight. And there is more
interest in Cordovan and Burgun
dy tones.
Leathers are light In weight,
flexible, easy on the foot wheth
er in dress or casual shoes.
Smooth leathers are in the lead,
and the new tannages are easy
on the foot and the eye.
In the grained leathers, the
traditional Scotch and heavy
types have given weight to new
cashmere soft leathers which
give an air of style and refine
ment to both town and casual
shoes.
Brushed leathers are in the
picture, but not as popular as
smooth or grained, with the pos
sible exception of black, which
continues to appeal. Some blue,
grey and white.
In the real country moccasin
type, in addition to black and
brown, there are Burgundy, char
coal brown, light tan and maple
shoes, suited to a weekend ward
robe. These appear both in
smooth and the new soft cash
mere grains. Crepe soles con
tinue to be featured but are not
as important as they were for
Spring and Summer wear.

Wing-Tip Design
Returns as Hot
Fashion for Men
Time was when men wore
wing-tip oxfords for business or
semi-dress wear. They were a
staple in every well-dressed
man's shoe wardrobe.
Today, the wing-top has sud
denly become hot fashion news.
Following the Continental trend,
it has taken on the new silhou
ette, with swept-back lines
which accentuate the longer,
slimmer look which is the base
cf the new shoe fashions.
No longer just a town fash
ion, the wing-tip has given a
new smartness to all types of
shoes, including loafers, one and
two-eyelet ties and the conven
tional five or six-eyelet oxfords.
Even in sports shoes, the wing
tip is contesting the field with
the plain vamp shoes which have
held the field for the last few
seasons.
More Formal Look
It's all in line with the more
formal look which has invaded
every department of men's wear.
Away with the open shirt, the
baggy slacks, the casual loafers.

ing, for dressing for the occa
sion whether it be casual or
formal.
A two-eyelet oxford, with the
slim, trim wing-tiD can be the
perfect accompaniment to smart
tweeds and flannels for going to
town. The Italian influence in
slimmer, trimmer lines is verv
much in evidence.
In sports shoes the wing-tip
appears as a dual fashion. It can
be worn to town, or with kiltie
tongue it assumes a more rug
ged, out-of-doors air.
Smart in Grain Leather
- grained leathers, formerly
considered correct only for cas
ual types, look smart indeed
with the wing-tip design. They're
flexible, soft on the foot, and
fit in handsomely with autumn
tweeds for business wear.
Even the loafers and slip-ons
have fallen in line with wing
tips, in accordance with that
new feeling for elegance which
is apparent in the whole field of
men's wear.

burban shoes that are the acme
of foot luxury.
Your foot is encased in the
sottest of waterproof leathers,
properly cut to give the maxi
mum of protection plus ease.
Shoes are as expertly construct
ed as your finest rifle.
While they have the proper
rugged look, they're never clum
sy but are correctly styled to
accord with active sports or
working clothes.
Full grain oil-tanned leathers
are expressly treated for hard
out-of-doors wear. Sweat resist
ant insoles are a feature every
out-of-doors man will annrciate.
For tramping miles, the arch-
supporiing steel shank is an im
portant feature.
It used to be aeonv to hrpafc
in new shoes for the great out
doors. These are easy on the
loot from the start.
For the country club athlete
they've even devised a dress
shoe which can double on the
greens. A classic wing-tip, by
dint of added kiltie tongue and
plastic spikes permits a round
oi gou before dinner.
Slipper Important
To Kindergarteners
The at-home slipper is as im
portant to the kindergarten and
grade school set as it is to their
mothers. Scrubbed and clean,
with bathrobe and slipper on,
the small fry settle themselves
in front of the television set for
an hour of solid pleasure.
Slipper make wonderful pres
ents, too. Any little girl is en
chanted to find a pair of pretty
at-home shoes . in the packages
under the tree.
There are hosts of smart new
styles for the very young set
this season some tailored, some
gaily decorated with sequins and
such. The fur-trimmed slipper,
always a big favorite, is out in
new more sophisticated guise, in
velvet, soft capeskin and the new
soft sculptured chenille. - - ...
Black for that grown-up look
and, white, a perennial favor
ite. Bright shades go well too
brilliant red, royal blue. And
the flower pastels, pink, blue,
lilac, yellow, green.
More down to earth are stur
dier slippers in corduroys and
velveteens; also making much of
attractive patterns - and gay
colors.
Star of the new shoe collec
tion, perhaps, is the sweater
pump which is the hit fashion of
the younger set for all sorts of
purposes. It's a slipper feature,
too. With its elasticized stretch-
able top it slips on like a glove.
THE NEWER STYLED wing-tip shoes take top place for golf when
fitted with plastic spikes, especially in black calf skin and with or
without kiltie tongues.
