chael' De Stefano, whose bullet-
pocked body was found stuffed
in the trunk of his car, may
have been the victim of an un
derworld war over circulation
of the missing Greenlease ran
som bills, police sources said to-
day. 1 -
' An anonymous telephone call
led police to the spot where De
Stefano's car was parked in front
of the McLaren Elementary
School Tuesday. School children
crowded about as police lifted
the body of the ex-convict and
bank robber from the trunk.
He had been shot five times
about 12 to 15 hours before, po
lice experts said. There was no
blood- on -the body, clothes, or
car, leading police to believe
"the killers must have washed
the body and put frash clothing
on it."
Pal Also Slain
.Only 10 days earlier, De Stef
ano's close friend, Dominic
Christiano, also had been killed
in gangland fashion. It was re
ported that the FBI was seeking
to link both men to the Green
lease ransom bills which have
suddenly begun burning up in
the Midwest
' So far, 67 bills from the $300,
000 in missing blood money have
been found in various parts of
the country. Most of them have
been recovered in the Chicago
Federal Reserve Bank the 46th
only Tuesday.
The money is part of $600,000
which Kansas City auto dealer
Robert Greenlease paid two
years ago in a futile attempt to
save the life of his kidnaped son.

Hall insisted he had most of the
money with him when he was
captured, but only about $300,-
000 was recovered.
Cut Rat Sale
FBI agents have said they be
lieve the underworld got hold
of the missing money, possibly
buying it at a cut rate, and has
recently unloaded most or all
of the missing bills through va
rious channels.
De Stefano and Christiano
were also believed to be mem
bers of a gang which went into
the risky business of robbing
syndicate - operated handbooks.
Four other members of the gang
have been killed in recent years,
apparently by gangland aven

De' Stefano, who held a job
with the City Bureau of Elec
tricity, was last seen Monday.
His long criminal record in
cluded convictions for a Maus-
ton. Wis., bank robbery and for
setting fire to a police squad
car, apparently in revenge
against an officer-who had ar
rested him. .

Communism has suffered a
startling defeat in several ten
sion spots in the far east and
middle east, Dr. D. Kirkland
West, pastor of the First Presby
terian church told members of
the Medford Rotary club in a
luncheon address Tuesday.
Speaking at the Jackson hotel
on highlights of his recent round-the-world
trip, Dr. West de
scribed the impact that freedom
has made upon South Koreans,
followed by a sweeping revival
of Christianity.
Since Korea was divided at
the 38th parallel, more than 5,
000,000 North Koreans have
moved south across the border
to escape the influences of Com
munist China and Russia. The
people of this war-ravaged land
are building churches at great
personal sacrifice, enjoying free
dom of worship for the first time
in many years.
In Formosa, too, Communism
has suffered a tremendous de
feat, the speaker declared. There
is a tremendous swing away from
Communism in Pakistan, India
and other points in the Middle
East, Dr. West observed, but he
warned against indication of
weakness which might change
the presently increasing balance
in favor of western ideologies.
In describing his visits to var
ious Rotary clubs throughout his
trip, Dr. West said that the Eng
lish language is almost universal
ly used and only in Japan were
meetings conducted in the native
tongue. Here earphone translat
ing equipment is employed. Men
of high, ideals and prestige
throughout the free world, re
gardless of color, race or creed,
are expanding the Rotary prin
ciples of "service above self" and
their impact in favor of world
peace will be increasingly felt.

Being Installed
At White City
Installation of southern Qre-H
gon's first electric furnace for
the manufacture of steel and
steel products began in " the
White City industrial area this
week.
The furnace is the first of sev
eral to be installed by Laugh
lin Alloy Steel company, estab
lished here to manufacture 'al
loy and special steels and steel
castings for a variety of indust
ries. Rebuilt by Green Electric Fur
nace company of Seattle, the
furnace was shipped here early
this week and installation began
immediately, under the super
vision of J. N. Laughlin, comp
any president; Thomas B. Laird,
executive vice-president, and
David Trudeau, melting and
foundry department manager. .
Transformer on Hand
The furnace pit and new buil
ding housing the furnace were
completed some time ago, and
the special transformer . used in
the operation, weighing 20 tons,
is also on hand and ready for
installation. - '
According to . Laughlin, the
new furnace has a capacity of
10,000 pounds of metal, and can
produce five tons of carbon or
stainless steel every 2V hours.
Scrap steel and low grade na
tive ores, such - as - chromium,
manganese, and tungsten will be
utilized in the Laughlin operation.

But getting a tank of waves
for Esther to, plow ' through
proved to be the biggest produc
tion headache of the year.
At last inspection, the NBC
stage still was flooded with two
inches of water. The special tank
built for Esther turned out not to
be waterproof.
"I think by now they wished
they'd never met me," sighed
Esther ' during . one rehearsal
while workmen mopped up the
rising tide on the floors
"The only solution may be to
move the tank to another stage.
If it keeps ' leaking during the
show, Milton will be doing the
sketches with water up to his
ankles." -
Esther has : been Interviewed
on "Toast of the Town" and
"Person to Person," but she's
never performed on television
because MGM wouldn't let her.
This year she won permission
for TV. Then " the networks
frowned that her swimming act
couldn't be done on at live show.
"Milton thought it could," she
said. "He wants everything to be
spectacular on his show this sea
son because they're all in color.
He.wanted to get people like me
who haven't appeared on television.-Well,
he's really starting
off with a splash." ,
NBC sent two engineers to
huddle with Esther on how to
get her under the whitecaps. A
40x15x10 foot tank was built.
But the 18,000 gallons of water
weighed 126,000 pounds, and the
stage floor couldn't take .the
weight. . -
The tank finally was rebuilt
in a V-shape to lighten the load.
Four cameras were planted
around the tank two next to
huge plexiglass windows to
show, Esther undulating under
water in her apricot-colored
swim suit.
