Germany's Salesman Undertakes Difficult Diplomatic Sales Job

But Brentano's big job is to ex
plain and to justify the agree
ments which his chief Chancel-

lor Konrad Adenauer made at
the recent German-Russian con
ference in Moscow.
At the time, the State Depart
m e n t said the agreements
marked the abandonment by the
Kremlin of its "bankrupt" Ger
man policies.
After thinking ihings over,
however. Western diplomats
seemed inclined to agree that for
a diplomatic bankrupt the Krem
lin had displayed some impres
sive assets.

If Brentano can convince the
Big Three foreign ministers that
Adenauer did win a victory for
West Germany, he will show
himself a good salesman.
He is called the "salesman of
Europe" for his long and untir
ing work in the interest of Eu
ropean unity toward which the
Schumann Plan for a coal and
steel pool was a start.
Brentano is one of the able
men who work in the dominat
ing shadow of 79-year-old Ade
nauer. Adenauer, who had long run
the foreign ministry himself,
turned the job over to Brentano
on June 5. -
In a sense, Brentano's visit to
New York means that he has
been freed1- from Adenauer's
apron strings.
He has long been known, to
Europeropean diplomats. But he
has worked quietly. He was
floor leader in Parliament for
Adenauer's Christian D e m o
cratic Party of which he was
co-founder when he was made
foreign minister.

Jackson County Public Health
association, stated today.
The cfiest x-ray clinic is open
only at Sacred Heart hospital on
Thursdays from 2 to 5 p.m. but
plans are underway to reopen
the Community hospital clinic
later this fall, according to
Boomer.
"Although the clinics were
established in the county less
than a year ago, already five
previously unknown cases of tu
berculosis have been found and
are under treatment, with sev
eral others under observation
and further tests," Dr. Merkel
stated.
"By far the largest .amount of
pathology is found in heart con
ditions and, here again, it is im
portant to individuals since the
conditons may be revealed in
time for precautions to be
taken," he continued.
The x-ray clinic at Sacred
Heart hospital is made available
to the public- through the co
operation of the hospital, the
Jackson County Medical society,
the health department and the
county health association. Vol
unteer help is furnished by mem
bers of the Sacred Heart Hospi
tal guild and Mrs. L. E. Duff,
president, in charge.

condition, but still hospitalized.

hospital. Dean Dibblee, Port
land, another Oregon State stu
dent, suffered tnly minor cuts
and bruises in the one-car accident.

cessor to Adenauer. There is in
increasing concern in Germany
because Adenauer insists on run
ning things himself. People point
out how Winston Churchill
groomed Anthony Eden, for the
prime ministry. Whether Ade
nauer has decided to groom
Brentano as his successor re
mains to be seen.
Soviet, British Naval
Groups to Trade Visits
Moscow (U.R) Russian and
British naval 'squadrons made
ready today for an exchange of
visits agreed upon at the Gen
eva "Summit" Conference.
The squadrons will consist of
six ships each. The Russians will
visit Portsmouth and the British
vill visit Leningrad for five days
beginning Oct. 12. '
