California Adds
New Restrictions
On State Products
California will not accept cu
cumbers, squash, pumpkins and
melons from Oregon after Oct.
2 unless accompanied by official
certification from the Oregon
state Department of Agriculture.
. The ban was placed on prod
ucts which are atttacked by pick
leworm and melonworm and all
such products grown east of and
including Montana, Wyoming,
Colorado and New Mexico are
included in the ban.
Not Found in Oregon '
Neither pest has been found
in Oregon, and products from
Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Ari
zona, Nevada and Utah will be
accepted on official certification.
Products from small lots may
be taken into California by trav
elers who can prove to border
station officials the products
were grown in Oregon.

Pakistan Ratifies
Baghdad Treaty

istan today completed -ratification
of the Baghdad Treaty with
Turkey and Iraq, fixing the east
ern anchor of the Western-sponsored
Middle ' Eastern defense
system.
. Pakistan deposited its instru
ment of ratification of the treaty,
formalizing a decision announced
earlier to join with Turkey, Iraq
and Britain in developing a
"northern tier" defense system.
Turkey and Iraq originated
the treaty of defense cooperation
last Feb. 24 and Britain later
became a party to it. -

Chamber of Commerce predicts
this year will be the best ever
for business, and will be topped
with the biggest Christmas buy
ing spree in history.
Only the farmer will not share
proportionately in the boom, the
chamber said.

new highs : . and the economy
is operating close to capacity.

was in firm control. During 12
years in power Peron ruthless
ly trampled down' all opposition
by gangster methods. He sup
pressed freedom of speech and
of the press. He made the courts,
the schools and the labor unions
political instruments. He brought
his country to the verge of eco
nomic ruin. His fall is a triumph
for lovers of liberty.
2. Secretary of State John
Foster Dulles, addressing the
United Nations General Assem
bly, called on Russia to free its
satellites and urged the unifi
cation of Germany. He demand
ed that Red China renounce the
use of force as a national policy.
Dulles called for world coopera
tion which would make the next
10 years "the healing decade of
true peace." ' ,
3. Iran seemed ready to join
the vast system of Western alli
ances against Communist aggres
sion. Premier Hussein Ala, ad
dressing his Parliament, ridi
culed the idea that , Iran could
longer remain neutral. It was
reported that he was discussing
an Iranian-Turkish alliance with
President Celal Bayer of Turkey,
who is now on a state visit to
Tehran, the Iranian capital.
THE BAD
' 1. Russia, seeking to build up
the East German Communist re-1
gime, gave its puppets control
of the area' which separates Ber
lin from West Germany. - The
threat of a new blockade of Ber
lin arose immediately. West Ger
man Chancellor Konrad "Aden
auer asked the United States,
Great Britain and France to pro
test the Russian move as a vio
lation of , international agree
ments. 2. A new wave of terrorism in
Algeria brought the French cabi
net into emergency session. Paris
dispatches said Premier Edgar
Faure regarded this situation as
even more serious than that in
Morocco where he is trying to
work ..out a home rule agree
ment. Algerian terrorists raided
farms, villages and military con
voys. New militarized police
forces were called up. The Faure
plan for Morocco still met with
opposition, raure laced trouoie
at home also because of a series
of strikes. The latest, a 24-hour
one, affected the government
owned railroads.
3. In Palestine armed Israelis
occupied a demilitarized zone on
the Israel-Egypt frontier. United
Nations officials joined Egypt in
denouncing the action as a viola
tion of the Egyptian-Israeli arm
istice. Israel said that Egypt had
established two military posi
tions in the zone. Maj. Gen. E.
L. M. Burns of Canada, the truce
supervisor, said the occupation
was a flagrant violation of the
armistice. He asked that the
Israeli troops be withdrawn at
once.

ental Europe, North Africa, Asia
Minor and Central Asia.
You seldom find us native in
country where the snowfall reg
ularly exceeds 25 inches. Those
of us who stand three feet at
the shoulder are formidable
fighters. My tail is short and my
ears are comparatively large.
My eyes are small.
My - distinctive nose is long,
flexile and the nostrils open on
a tough, flat, mobile, disk-like
plate which is reinforced within
by gristle attached to the skull
a worthy tool for lifting and
pushing weights and breaking
through tangled brush. By ' my
voice a human can-easily tell
when I am hungry, . querulous,
angry or pleasantly gratified.
Because I have a light cover
ing of hair and flies and insects
bother me no end, I enjoy mud
baths. My offspring sometimes
sleep in a circle with their heads
turned inwards. '
My food is largely roots, tu
bers, " fruits, nuts, berries, and
the like, together with small an
imal life. I eat almost constantly;
storing up fat to sustain me dur
ing lean winter months. .
. When .at bay, we are often

sea disturbance 75 miles east of
the spot where another MATS

ed seeing the phenomenon. The
second pilot did not give the
time he saw the disturbance.
