Hilda Death Toll
Increases to 204
Tampico, Mex. U.R) The
death toll from Hurricane Hilda
reached 204 today as flood wa
ter began to recede, but at least
370 other persons were still
missing and presumed dead.
Herbert M. Williams, an
American cattle rancher who
lives in Tampico, said it is pos
sible the dead will reach into
the thousands. Williams flew his
private plane over the vast dev
astated area and reported that
tiny villages that once dotted
the terrain are no longer there,
completely washed away with
no sign of life.
First estimate of material
damages in the Tampico area to
taled $120,000,000. The govern
ment owned oil industry said its
instillations suffered damages
estimated at $20,000,000.
President Adolfo Ruiz Cor
tines remained in Tampico to
take personal command of the
"Operation Air Bridge."
He decreed martial law over
the entire region affected by the
hurricane.

land will make her television de
but tomorrow night and, as us
ual with the
dynamic per
former, there
will be as
much drama
behind the
cameras as in
AfT front.
The singer,
regarded
as one of the
Aline Mosby greatest enter
tainers, brings to the CBS-TV
Ford Jubilee her revue that
brought raves at the Palace
Theater in New York and at the
London Paladium.
And, as when she made , her
much publicized movie, "A Star
Is Born," Judy's show has be
come an unusual production at
CBS' big studios. She and hus
band Sid Luft are receiving
$125,000 for the one-night stand
more, according to CBS, than
any single performer has col
lated for entertaining on the
home screens.
Night Rehearsals
Judy has been rehearsing at
night, a precedent at CBS. She
still has trouble keeping day
time working hours. Because
she is new to TV, a special moni
tor (at $2,000 an hour) was
brought in during her camera
tests so she could see herself on
color TV.
Judy is rated a special enter
tainer, too, so CEfS broke an
other rule and will let a live
audience view the show. That
will cost $10,000 for special
equipment because of fire laws.
"Judy didn't want canned
laughter and applause. She want
ed people," explained associate
producer Berni Gould.
But, he added, the star "has
been extremely cooperative.
"We heard rumors about how
difficult she was, but it's not
true," he said. "We kept a flex
ible schedule expecting trouble,
but she's been wonderful.
"Of course, this girl knows
more about show business than
anybody. If she asked why
you're making a camera move
you better know why. But we've
won half the "arguments, and
she's won half, and you can't
ask for a better deal."
Sayi She's Scared
Judy confessed she's "scared"
about her TV debut.
" "I won't know which camera
to look at," she laughed as she
watched a camera rehearsal. "I'll
get such stage fright. Oh, yes, I
always feel whoozy before I go
on."
"I know I'mlieavy," she add
ed, looking at her figure in her
gray slacks and yellow blouse.
"I don't care any more. I feel
better this way.",
Judy gave up her touring stage
show to go on TV but says,
"I'd like to be shot before Saturday."
"TV is insane confusion, but
it's a great medium. I'd love to
do more. But that depends on
how TV feels about me," she"
said with one eye on the bustling
rehearsal.

District 6C Hires New Teacher, Uses
Churches To Handle Enrollment Boost
Central Point One new
teacher was hired and two
church buildings are being util
ized to handle an increase great
er than anticipated in District 6
schools, H. P. Jewett, superin
tendent, has announced.
The total number of students
1,954 enrolled in four Dis
trict 6 schools is 228 more than
the total last year. Of the 1,954,
554 of them are at Crater High
school in Central Point, 1,033
in Central Point elementary
school, 277 at Gold Hill and 100
at Sams Valley.
Teacher Hired
Mrs. A. L. Fellers of Ashland
was hired by the district this
week to handle additional in
creases. Previously, an addition
al teacher was employed at Gold
Hill to handle anticipated in
creases there. ' . .
Two third grade rooms were
moved to two rooms in a church
a block and a half from the Cen
tral Point elementary school,
Jewett said, and part of the Gold
Hill elementary school music de
partment moved to a church
basement across the street from
the school. '
Architects Have Plans
Jewett said plans are still in
the hands of architects for re
vision for construction of ele
mentary school buildings at Gold
Hill and Central Point. Bids for
construction of the two struc
tures were rejected by school
district board of directors be
cause bids ranged from $25,000
to $35,000 higher than available
money.
Plans and specifications for
construction with concrete
blocks are being drawn up by
Medford Architect Robert J
Keeney to reduce costs. Pre
viously brick was to be used in
wall construction. .
