Toll of Hurricane Hilda

The toll in human lives left by
Hurricane Hilda's death-dealing
forces soared to at least 183 to
day even as the stricken port
city of Tampico and surrounding
villages faced a threat of more
rain.
Authorities reported 183 as
"known dead." Another 370 per
sons were "assumed dead" and
countless hundreds were still
unaccounted for.
Riyers Rising Rapidly
The Panuco and Tamesi rivers
were rising rapidly and the Mex
ican Weather Bureau reported
storms were building up in both
the Pacific and Gulf regions,
threatening to pour more water
into the flooded zone.
The death toll in Tampico had
risen to 127 and officials said
there were now 30,000 homeless
housed in 44 concentration cen-

Ferro-Chromium in
Tests at Seattle
Ores mined in southern Ore
gon and northern California and
milled at Laughlin Alloy Steel
company's beneficiating plant at
Eagle Point have yielded 59 per
cent ferro-chromium when re
duced in an electric ore reduc
tion furnace in Seattle this
week, according to Thomas B
Laird, executive vice-president
of the steel company.
Laird said that the chromite
recovery from 100 pounds of ore
tested was considered more
than satisfactory."
Tested Furnace
"We would have been satis
fied with a.. 40 per cent re
covery," Laird said. The low-
grade ore from Laughlin's stock
pile at Eagle Point was sent to
Seattle to test a furnace recent
ly rebuilt by a Washington man
ufacturer for installation here.
A good part of the ore, Laird
said, had been rejected by the
government stockpile, in Grants
Pass as being too high in iron
content. It was milled into
chromium concentrates at the
Eagle Point mill and then sent
to Seattle to produce the ferro-
chromium product. The entire
operation will be handled lo
cally as soon as the furnace is
installed at the steel company
plant at White City. Ferro-
chromium is an essential ingre
dient of the alloy steels which
the company will produce here.
