Do-lt-Yourself Craze in New
Phase; Experts Finish Wrk
Br ELIZABETH TOOMEY
New York (U.R) If "The
Perils of Pauline" were rewrit
ten today, it just might be the
saga of a pretty housewife mired
in discouragement in the middle
of her own do-it-yourself pro
jects.
There is no one around who
thinks a woman can't paint her
own kitchen ceiling but there
are a number of learned painters
who admit that a lot of paint
has fallen on pretty faces while
the amateur painter was learn-'
ing how. .
So now we are entering a new
phase of do-it-yourselfism. More
people who are experts are try
ing to see that homeowners
have more places to turn for
help when they get into trouble.
"First the amateur must over
come his' or her reluctance to
ask for detailed instructions," a
paint demonstrator at a new do-it-yourself
show here advised.
"Too often a man, especially,
will just buy a can of paint and
walk out with it because he is
embarrassed to reveal how little
he knows."
First Bloom of Enthusiasm
"Many people get started in
the first bloom of enthusiasm,"
said an executive of a laminat
ed plastic covering manufac
turer. "When the bloom fades
they find it is more of a job
then they thought. That is where
the professional should be will
ing to step in and help the home
owner finish the job."
This expert said he felt that
professional workers, at first in
clined to resent the surge of
interest in learning certain buil
ding and decorating skills by
homeowners, now were adopting
a more releastic attitude. They
realized, he said, that do -it -yourself
projects often repre
sented redecorating or building
that the homeowner never would
have started if it meant hiring a
professional. And an expert
with a kindly attitude could
make a tidy living completing
the ambitious attempts that go
awry.
Daily Shows at Bank
A savings bank in midtown
Manhattan opened a do-it-your
self show here this week with
daily demonstrations of various
projects wallpapering, mak
ing slip covers, painting and in
stalling tricky traverse curtain
rods.
- A well-dressed man watched
in fascination as a girl demon
strator casually slapped a length
of wallpaper on a plywood back
drop. He wasn't a struggling
young man trying to cut corners
but a successful vice-president
of a large commercial real estate
firm who liked to relax on week
ends by decorating a recently
bought house in he country.
"If that girl can do it, I guess
I can," he said. "And if I can't
do it, then I'm sure my wife can.
She's handier than I am."
