Mussolini Source For Many Political Ideas Used by Peron

Juan D. Peron picked up many
of his political ideas from Benito
Mussolini.
He like to make speeches from
a balcony to his followers mass
ed in the streets below. Peron
watched Mussolini in action
when he was Argentine military
attache in Rome. He listened and
learned. He became a politician
in uniform.
Peron is handsome in a florid
waf. In recent years he kept his
hair jet-black by the use of dye.
He is a sports enthusiast. Dur
ing his student days he had been
an outstanding boxer and
swordsman and when he took
over' Argentine he sponsored
everything that favored the de
velopment of sports in the
schools.
Peron had absolutely no con
ception of a free press. He knew
that after he had confiscated the
great independent newspaper La
Prensa nothing was printed in
Argentina that was contrary to
his wishes. 'He couldn't under
stand why the same thing wasn't
true elsewhere.
One U.S. ambassador after an
other would be met with Peron's
request to "do something" about
the unfriendly attitude of the
American newspapers toward his
regime. He couldn't believe that
Washington couldn't change the
editorial policy of the leading
U.S. newspapers if it really want
ed to.
Peron was very skillful at
playing off opposing elements
against each other and event
ually liquidating both.
Evita's Influence
Many people in the' United
States had the idea that Evita,
Peron's vigorous wife who died
three years ago, was the more
dominant personality of the two.
I do not agree. I think that she
had great influence over Peron,
but I also think that he used her
for his own purposes, often to do
dirty work he didn't want to
take the responsibility, for him
