President Eisenhower's wife
Mamie hasn't gone shopping
much since she arrived to share
her husband's Colorado vacation,
but when she does she likes to

any other housewife.
She wants to be sure she

The President's return trout

his last of the current Colorado

Meantime, Washington news

He isn't a baseball fan.
The chosen dates, Sept. 27-28,
conflict with the opening of the

So despite the "command per

Lady Baseball Fan Undecided on Trying Next Question
New York (U.R) Mrs.
Myrtle Power, 70-year-old base
ball fan currently batting 1.000
in TV's toughest league, steps up
to the plate for her 10th swing
tonight.
The sprightly charmer from
Buford, Ga., has swatted her way
through nine quiries on CBS-TV
"The $64,000 Question," to run
her earnings to $16,000. This
evening, "Myrt," as she prefers
to be called, can try to double
her stake or call a halt to the
contest and retire with her win
nings. Changes Mind Often
"I don't know what I'm going
to do," says Myrt. "I change my
mind four or five times in a day.
I may go to the program think
ing one thing and do another.
Last week, I didn't know what
I was going to do right up to the
time I went on."
Myrt, who is almost as cool
in the clutch'as one of her fav
orite ballplayers, Ted Williams,
has breezed through ' the ques
tions thrown at her thus far.
. Myrt, a vociferous partisan of
the Brooklyn Dodgers, now
works for' a couple in Roslyn
Heights, N.Y., as a nursemaid
and housekeeper. "I've been go
ing to a couple of ballgames a
week," says Myrt. "And when I
can't get to the park I watch on
TV."
Myrt has been a baseball fan
since 1895. "My two brothers
played ball, my brother-in-law,
my uncle and my three sons,"
she says. "I had to learn baseball
or they would have thrown me
out of the house."
Many of Myrt's friends and
relatives played ball for a semi
pro team in Georgia, now dis
banded, about which Myrt still
reminisces. "The team was the
Bona Allen Shoemakers," she
says, "and they were one of the
finest teams in the country. They
used to go to the national tourn
ament every year and bring
home the money."
To See World Series
Myrt intends to put in an ap
pearance at the World Series in
New York now that her team,

Washington (U.R) Rep. John
D. Dingell (D-Mich.), a member
of Congress since 1932 and an
expert on taxes, died Monday
night of heart disease at the
Army's Walter Reed hospital.
Dingell, 61, was the first mem
ber of the 84th Congress to die.
The fact that not a single law
maker died last session set some
thing of a modern record.
The Michigan congressman
came into office on the New
Deal sweep in 1932 and had
served ever since, rising to second-ranking
Democrat on the
tax -drafting House Ways and
Means Committee.
In that capacity, he had a
hand in most of the important
tax legislation shaped by Con
gress in recent years.
Dingell entered ' the hospital
Friday. His condition had not
been considered serious but he
took a turn for the worse Mon
day night and died about 9 p.m.
(EDT).
Only 24 of the 435 House mem
bers had served . in Congress
longer than Dingell. He was

of Anywhere, Anywhere, USA." elected to 12 consecutive terms.
As We Live
Feelings Of Inadequacy
May Cause Frequent Lying ,
People lie for many different
reasons. A feeling of inadequacy
is most common. That is what , is
in back of the trouble in the fol
lowing situation:

hangs around
in the club un
til he feels
like coming
home. When I
question him
about beino so
late he tells me that he has just
gotten through working. In spile
of this, he doesn't give me
enough to get by on. If I didn't
work, too, my children would be
without clothes, shoes, and other
things they really need. My hus
band keeps 'borrowing money
from loan companies and other
places. I never find out about
this until they send their bills
or call. If I question my husband
about these loans, he denies
them, gets angry, and then stays
out even later the next night. I
feel that this lying is a bad exam
ple for the children, but I don't
know what to do about it What
would you suggest?" .
(A) You are certainly right in
feeling that your husband is
setting a bad example for the
children when he lies to get him
self out of a difficult problem.
Young children have epough dif
ficulty in distinguishing truth
from falsehood as it is. When
they have an example of lying
before them, it does not help
them to learn to be truthful.
By ELIZABETH HURLOCK, PH.D.
In back of your husband's
lying is a feeling of inadequacy.
He enjoys stopping off on the
way home from work, perhaps
to have some drinks with his
friends, but he feels ashamed of
himself when he knows that he
has inconvenienced you and in
adequate when he realizes that
if he did not use money. for
drink, you would not have to go
out to work to get the things
for your children that he should
be providing.
Feels Ashamed
He also feels inadequate and
ashamed of himself when he has
to borrow money and you dis
cover it. The fact that he is a
good worker, but loses his jobs
because of lying, would suggest
that this has been a habit with
him and is not limited to his
home life. ' .
Try to be less critical of him,
urge him to be franker with you,
and see if this does not help him
to be more truthful. If you could
bolster his self-confidence, he
would have less reason to lie
than he now has.
