Phil Moyer Plans Olympic Team Tryout If He Licks Casey in PAL Ruckus Here
Phil Moyer, Portland, North
west middleweight champion,
will enter the Olympic tryc-uts
if he can take the measure of
Hugh Casey this Saturday night
in the Medford Police Athletic
league at the senior high football
stadium.
Moyer meets Casey, San Fran
cisco, a champ in his weight in
California, in the semi-wind-up
of the Battle of National Cham
pions outdoor card. Jackie
Puscas, Eugene, national AAU
lightweight titlist, and . George
Charles. San Francisco, AAU
featherweight champ for the U.
S., are the main events of the
super program.
Puscas and Charles carry
bombs in each hand but even
more may be displayed by Moy
er and Casey who fight in a
heavier bracket. While Phil rec
ognized in AAU circles for his
smoothness, he has, in the past
year, become a hard hitter with
either mitt. He recently boxed
in training sessions with World
Champion Bobo Olson and some
observers raved more about
Moyer than they did the champ.
In Casey the Portlander may
meet possibly the most potent
hitter and most experienced
scraotier he has faced in his
whole career. The San Francis
can has a whole string of Golden
Glove, AAU and Diamond Belt
togas. His record is 52 victories,
29 by knockouts, against three
defeats. Experts here still rate
the tangle a toss-up.
Puscas, with a trip to Europe
to begin next month, apparently
doesn't want Charles to stain his
record. He's confided to PAL
officials that he has been train
ing harder for this bout than he
did for the trip to the national
AAU finals. He indicated that he
won't feel right about his trip
abroad unless he can subdue
the San Franciscan. Charles is
fast and a clever hitter.
Other top bouts match Larry
Lewis, Medford, Oregon fly
weight titlist, against Paul Villa
lobos, San Francisco Golden
Glove winner, and Denny Moy
er, northwest welter trophy-
holder, against Al Connelly, Cal
ifornia Golden Glove and Dia
mond Belt winner.
A latest addition to an already
fine card will be Bert Singer,
132-pound Portlander. He meets
Ramon Unive, Klamath Falls.
Singer is rated one of the Clever
est battlers in the northwest in
his weight but has weak spot in
his inability to punch with au
thority. Unive, on the other
hand, is a blasting hitter. The
match is of the classic puncher-
