The combined lures of conser
vatism, and of old-fashioned
pomp and circumstance are po
tent lac tors
still in Great
Britain.
Two brief
point up the
fact that to
gether they
have caused
the collapse of
what might
have been pol
itical dynas-
coarles Mcuiui ties.
One dispatch comes from New
Delhi. It reports that Malcolm
MacDonald, son of Britain's
greatest labor leader, has be
come Queen Elizabeth's high
commissioner to India.
He was escorted in regal cere
mony, with an escort of scarlet
uniformed lancers, to be receiv
ed by Indian President Rajen
dra Prasad. ,
Th other dispatch is from
London. It notes that Gwilym
Lloyd George, son of one of
Britain's greatest liberal leaders,
,may be made conservative lead
er in the House of Commons.
'Extreme Socialist
Malcolm MacDonald is the
son of Ramsay MacDonald, who
-was born to a Scots laborer and
who entered politics as an ex
treme Socialist.
Gwilym Lloyd George is the
son of David Lloyd George, who
was born to a poverty-stricken
Velsh school teacher-farmer and
who entered politics as an ex
treme Liberal.
Both fathers rose to be prime
minister. Both sons were elected
to the House of Commons in
their twenties. Malcolm natur
ally was a Laborite, Gwilym
naturally a Liberal:
David Lloyd George was mob
bed because he opposed the Beer
war, and he shocked the nation
by his first budget after he be
came chancellor of the excheq
uer in 1908. He announced he
had designed it "to make pov
erty as remote to the people of
this country as the wolves which
once infested the forests."
Ramsay MacDonald was mob
bed because he opposed World
War I.
Both Split Parlies
But pomp and circumstance
softened up both fathers. Both
split their parties by their in
creasing leaning - to moderate
policies.
MacDonald especially bask
ed in the sun of high office, with
its accompanying state dinners
at Buckingham palace.
Malcolm MacDonald entered
politics enthusiastically, deter
mined to carry on in his father's
footsteps as a Labor party lead
er. But it happened that he was
made parliamentary under-sec-retary
to the dominions office.
He became absorbed in the
problems of empire, and decided
to specialize in that field. He
rose to be dominions minister
and served as high commission
er general for Southeast Asia
before he got his present post.
Out of politics, he is now a non
party man.
Gwilym Lloyd George is now
home minister' in the conserva
tive cabinet, one of the half-doz
en top posts. After starting out
as a Liberal, he first became a
National Liberal, representing
the right wing of the party. As
he rose he swung more and
more to conservatism. He now
represents his constituency as
both Liberal and Conservative
Acreage Rental
Plan Suggested
Washington (U.R) An influ
ential Republican congressman
urged the Eisenhower adminis
tration today to spend $300,000,-
000 on an acreage rental plan to
bolster farm income in the cru
cial 1956 election year.
Rep. H. Carl Anderson (R
Minn.) made the request in a
letter to Secretary of Agricul
ture Ezra T. Benson.
Anderson told a reporter that
the Republican party "cannot
expect toy get enough support

west" in next year's election un
less something is done to reverse
the downward trend in farm
prices.
In his letter to Benson, Ander
son proposed that the govern
ment pay at least $10 an acre to
farmers who voluntarily take
land out of production to help
prevent surpluses. The goal
would be 30,000,000 idle acres.
House Republican Whip Leslie
C. Arends (111.) also mentioned
the possibility of an acreage
rental plan in a statement issued
yesterday. He said some such
program "is worthy of consid
eration and may be one of the
things considered after Congress
reconvenes" next January.

Hartford, Conn. U.R) : A
motorist who asked the motor
vehicles department for the num
ber of his 1954 driver's license
explained that it was still valu
able, even though outdated.
"That number was the combina
tion to my safe," he said.

Gunner Meet
Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

arriving here today to prepare
their team's planes for the Air
Force's fourth fighter weapons
and gunnery meet to be held
Sept. 28 to Oct. 1.
Teams from six Air - Force
commands will participate in the
meet. Participating teams in
clude those from the Far East
Air Forces, with headquarters
in Tokyo; the 50th fighter-bomber
wing from Hahn, Germany,
and the 21st fighter-bomber
wing from Ramtsein, Germany.
Teams from the United States
include the Strategic Air Com
mand's 508th fighter wing from
Turner Air Force Base, Ga., and
12th from Bergstrom AFB, Tex
as; the Tactical Air Command's
450th day fighter wing from
Foster AFB, Texas, and 405th
fighter-bomber wing from Lang

Sources in close touch with
the army say unnamed army of
ficials have called on President
Peron to resign. There is no of
ficial confirmation. However,
Peron is reported to have gone
to the army ministry.
Tight censorship prevails.
I HOPE Peron is in bad trouble.
We want none of his kind of
stuff in the Western Hemisphere.
WHAT IS his kind of stuff?
Basically, it is government
by ONE CLASS which hogs all
the privileges.
It is the exact opposite of
what our greatest Americans (in
cluding Abraham Lincoln) have
described as government of (all)
the people, by (all) the people
and for (all) the people.
That is the fundamental idea
of the American way of life.
GETTING back to the U.S.A.:
Senator John Williams of
Delaware (a member of the sen
ate finance committee) says that
there is an increasing threat of
inflation which may reach dan
gerous proportions soon unless
it is checked.
He adds:
"Because of this threat, I will
oppose tax reductions in the
next session of congress unless
projected revenues indicate that
there will be a BUDGET SUR
PLUS." (An unbalanced federal bud
get is a prime promoter of inflation.)
I THINK perhaps you'll remem
ber Senator Willliams. He is
the hay and feed store proprie
tor who got into the senate from
Delaware a while back and has

alert on three-lane highways.
