Ends Foreign Tour

City Mormon Tabernacle choir
climaxed its six-week European
tour Saturday with a concert
before a packed Franco-American
audience at the Palais de
Chaillot theater here.
The 379-group choral ensem
ble has sung in seven countries
to the praises of European audi
ences and critics alike. High spot
of the tour was the dedication
of the first Mormon Temple in
Europe at Berne, Switzerland,
September 11.
Choir leaders said that the
group looked forward to the
concert Saturday night as the
climax of the trip. Sunday the
choristers and fellow Mormons
accompanying them held a serv
ice at the Salle Pleyel under the
auspices of the Paris Latter Day
Saints mission. .
Then the singers disbanded to
make their way home in groups
by various routes.
The concert was broadcast by
the French National radio.

Magazine Writer To Speak for
District Session of Gardeners
- Mrs. Orrin Hale, Bothell,
Wash., who is "Aunt Emmy" of
Pacific Gardens and Homes
magazine, will be the featured
speaker at the fall meeting of
Siskiyou district, Oregon Fede
ration of Garden clubs.. Tne
meeting will be held September
29 in the Grange hall at Eagle
Point.
The session will open with a
coffee hour at 9 a.m. with mem'
bers of the Talent club serving.
Eagle' Point and Butte Falls
clubs will act as co-hostesses for
the luncheon which will be
served in the Grange hall, by
the Eagle Point Grange women,

Mrs. Robert Hiatt has been se
lected Dresident of Medford
League of Women Voters it was
announced at the September
meeting of the league Saturday
at the Jackson hotel. The an
nouncement was made by Mrs,
H. P. Bosworth Jr., chairman of
the nominating committee, who
stated that Mrs. Hiatt had been
chosen after the resignation of
Mrs. Lucille Foster.
Mrs. Fred Carr presided for
the meeting, and announced
Mrs. Foster's resignation. Mem
bers of Mrs. Hiatt's board this
year are Mrs. Paul Janney, Mrs.
John S. Day, Mrs. Leland Ment
zer. Mrs. Gordon McKenzie.
Mrs. .Tim Barnard. Mrs. John
Ousterhout, Mrs., Carr, Miss
Donna Sherwood and Mrs. Hom
er Marx.
The development of women's
rights was traced by . Kenneth
O'Connell, professor of law at
the University of Oregon, who
spoke for the meeting, a buffet
luncheon at the Jackson hotel.
Mr. O'Connell, using "Adam's
Rib" as his topic, spoke of wom
en's rights as a lawyer sees them
showing the gradual evolution
through the last five thousand
years to the present status of
equality which women enjoy to
day. He employed many quota
tions from literature and from
statutes. .
Time changes for the unit
meetings were given. The eve
ning unit will meet at the home
of Mrs. Stephen Nye,' 816 West
Tenth street, the first' Tuesday
of each month. The afternoon
meeting will be held at the
home of Mrs. H. P. Bosworth Jr.,
2425 East Main street, the third
Wednesday 1 of each : month at
9:45 a.m.
The next general meeting will
be the last Saturday in October,
the location of which will be an
nounced later. Erie Allen, city
editor of the Medford Mail
Tribune, will be the speaker on
the subject - of . "Freedom of
Speech." This topic is in keeping
with the civil liberties study be
ing done by the League units
at this time.

Annual Fall Membership March Opened
By Camp Fire Girls of Rogue Council
A multitude of new members
men and women, young and
old is the goal of the Rogue
Area Camp Fire Girls who will
launch their annual fall "mem
bership march" this week. "
.The all-out campaign for girl
members and adult volunteers
will continue through November
30th, -field director, Mrs. Tom
Gerety, revealed today.
"Be friendly make friends
join the Camp Fire Girls!" is
the theme of the nation-wide
drive which aims at recruiting
enough adult workers to ex
tend the program to hundreds
of girls eager to swell the ranks
of Camp Fire.
"We can promise sound re
turns from each investment in
the Camp Fire Girls," Mrs. Ger
ety states. "The future of our
community and our country will
be in better hands because of
the training for citizenship and
leadership given these girls to
day. "The scope of their activities,
of course, depends on the num
ber of men and women willing
to give of their time and talents
to Camp Fire. Here in Med

stalled new officers of Shady
Gove Garden club at the last
meeting. It was held September
12 at the home of Mrs. Tom
King, with Mrs. Dick Bartus and
Mrs. Pearl Adair as cohostesses,
Officers installed were Mrs,
Edin Strothers, president; Mrs
Richard Pf eifer, vice-president:
Mrs. Bartus was installed secre
tary as a substitute for Mrs
Verne Wilson; and Mrs. Ted
Jantzer was installed treasureiy
as a substitute for Mrs. Tom
Tepper. Mrs. King was installed
historian. Each officer was pre
sented, a corsage made by Mrs
William Shepherd.
Mrs. Floyd also gave an In
structive talk on the growth and
care of fuchsias.
During the business meeting
a conversation committee con
sisting of Mrs. Flink, chairman,
Mrs. Miles Williams and Mrs.
Cecil Kee, was appointed by
Mrs. Strothers.
Mrs. W. Fitzgerald, Eagle
Point, Mrs. Rathe, here from
California to visit 'Mrs. Pfeifer,
and Mrs. Lou Walters, Oakland,
a sister of Mrs. O. L.. Williams
were guests.
Next meeting of the club will
be Monday, October 10 at 12:30
p.m. at the home of Mrs. Pfeifer
in Shady Cove. Mrs. Walter
Blair of Shady Cove and Mrs
Ranald Axtell of Trail will be
cohostesses. Mrs. Clarence Da
vies, Eagle Point, will be guest
speaker and her topic will be
"Soil Conservation."

It was announced that mem
bers had donated 15 - dozen
cookies, four pounds of coffee
and canned fruit to the Salvation
Army for fire fighters.
Next meeting of the group
will be September 12 and at that
time the group will hear a speak
er talking on religion.

bership march will be Camp
Fire activities geared to the 1955
year-round slogan "Let Freedom
Ring."
In addition to citizenship pro
grams in honor of the year's
theme, members are continuing
their camping, handcraft and
homemaking activities. Camp
Fire's program . of fun and
friendship prides itself on offer
ing interests for all ages. Three
age groups are served by the or
ganization: Blue Birds (7 to 10),
Camp Fire Girls (10 to 15) and
Horizon club members on the
high school level.
"Here is one of the few civic
drives which asks no monetary
contribution," Mrs. Gerety
pointed out today. "It asks for

time and your interest."
Rogue Area council is a mem
