Bayes Said Early

Thomas r Bayes Jr., Flat Lick,
Ky., was on friendly terms with
his captors less than three
months after he was wounded
and taken prisoner in Korea, ac
cording to testimony at his court
martial here yesterday.
The 32-year-old soldier is ac
cused of 14 acts of collaborating
with the enemy while a pris
oner. Yesterday's testimony came
from Earl R. Smith, a laborer
of Keego Harbor, Mich., and in
a deposition - taken from Jose
Martinez, of Farmington, N.M.
Both were also prisoners of the
Chinese Communists.
Smith testified that Bayes had
access to camp headquarters and
was granted freedom to move
between prisoners compounds.
Both men said that the price
Bayes had to pay for these free
doms was to become a Com
munist mouthpiece in the pris
oners' circle.'
Martinez' deposition asserted
that Bayes admitted ' making
propaganda -broadcasts for the
Communists, but the defense
countered that Martinez and
Bayes were unfriendly and that

Bloodhound Seeks

Maggie, a bloodhound who once
hunted escaped convicts, today
gave search parties slim hope
that they may yet rescue two
elderly uranium hunters lost
since' Sunday in the Mt. St.
Helens wilderness area.
The dog today resumed her
search of a "hot scent" picked
up yesterday when she led
searchers eight miles along the
ridge of Goat Mountain. Missing
are Charles Allger, 85, Tacoma,
and Charles Dickens, 70, San
Diego.
Jets To Commemorate
Air Battle of Britain

two modern jet fighter, planes
will fly over London -today to
commemorate the day 15 years
ago when' the Royal Air Force
turned the tide in the air battle
of Britain. . ,
The fly-past, an annual event
for the last ten years, will be led
by a Spitfire and, a Hurricane
fighter, the piston-engine planes
which' took the brunt of Ger
many's air assault on Britain.

Canada Postpones
Salk Polio Shofs
Ottawa (U.R) Canada's 1956
polio vaccination program may
be delayed until late spring by
a shut down of plants manufac
turing Salk anti-polio vaccine
for safety reasons, official
sources said today.
Connaught Laboratories plants
were shut down because they ,
were not prepared to turn out
with safety the increased
amounts of the vaccine needed
for the 1956 program.
New Connaught Laboratories,
under construction near Toronto
and at the University of Mon
treal, are not expected to be in
operation . for two or three
months. One batch of the vac
cine, enough for 90,000 to 100,-
000 shots, has been held in re
serve from 1955 production.
Sources here said that all pro-
duction at Connaught was halted
when the ' demand and distribu
tion difficulties increased the
"danger factor."
' While some batches had to be
destroyed, batch No. 25, describ
ed as one of the last turned out
by Connaught's Toronto labora
tory, passed all safety tests.
It is the batch now held in
reserve.
Some 880,000 Canadian chil
dren in the most susceptible age
groups got two and in some cases
three ' immunization shots. The
program was halted in July and
Health Minister Paul Martin an
nounced that Canadian medical
advisers recommended against
giving -the shots v during the
height of the polio season late
summer and early fall. .
Freak Accident Kills
Worker at Heppner
Heppner, Ore. (U.R) A freak
accident . yesterday resulted in
fatal injuries to 35-year-old
Keith Johnson, of ' Heppner, a
workman installing fire escapes
on a grain elevator-here.
Johnson was tossed 30 feet
out of his boatswain's chair,
when a car inadvertently drove
into the rope that held the ap
paratus through a pulley, high
up on the side of the elevator.
The rope was anchored to anoth
er car on the ground below when
a car driven by an unidentified
motorist struck the line and jolt
ed Johnson out of the chair.
