nice figure. But it was talent
that got her that crown.
Sharon also had poise, knew
how to handle herself down the
ramp and how to walk and talk.
But most of all with the fussy
Judges it was the talent which
won her the first prize,
The point is that emphasis in
the so-called Beauty contests is
away from the bathing suit and
the body, and towards baton
twisting and pipe organ playing
and singing and dramatic read
ings. . ' -
Can Com From Nowhere
In the old days it was noth
ing but beauty, but today a kid
can come up from nowhere and
have the wrong measurements
and maybe come out a winner.
If she can sing or show ' other
talent. v .
Margaret Gorman of Washing
ton, D. C.; was the first winner.
All she had to do was to look
pretty which she could do. That
was in 1921 when they called it
the Neptune Follies. ,
She didrrt have to yodel or
ride a horse or play the guitar.
All she did was to show herself
in a knee length bathing suit.
The fact that Margaret, now
married to a successful real
estate man here, is trying to
forget the whole thing is beside
the point.
Margaret didn't run out to
Hollywood and bust into a pro
ducer's office and say "Give me
a sprint tn rMrl. I'm rearlv rial."
Won a Trophy
Neither did she make the kind
of money the winners today do,
either. She got no scholarship.
She was just a 16-year-old kid
who won a trophy and a few pen
nies and came back home. .
' Dotty Lamour didn't quite
make the grade on talent in the
long ago, but she was smart
enough to buy herself a sarong,
and tike salesmen just happened
to have her size.
' But it's a little different these
days. There is TV, which lives
on talent, where the body and
the voice or fingers on the banjo
don't count so much.
A youngster doesn't have to
squeeze into a bathing suit any
more. That's-only part of the
judging. She. also has to have
the talent and it helps a lot if
she is smart. '

Braced for Heavy

Angeles area brace ditself for
another heavy smog attack; to
day as state, county and city
authorities prepared use of
emergency disaster measures if
necessary.
The densest smog on record
blanketed the area yesterday
with choking, irritating fumes
which approached officially des
ignated "health menace" levels,
The attack was so bad that Gov.
Goodwin J. Knight informed the
County Air Pollution Control
district that he had placed the
California Disaster committee
on an alert standby basis.

The blue-black haze cut visi
bility to only a few blocks. Five
persons were treated at City hall
for severe eye irritation.
Already reeling from the re
cent killer heat wave which left
a death toll of 115 persons, the
area was under a first level
smog alert for three hours' and
nine minutes yesterday in sticky
temperatures which climbed to
93 at Civic Center. It was the
seventh first level alert in coun
ty history.
For a while it appeared that
a second level alert would be
called for the first time. The
second alert is called when air
contamination' poses "a danger
ous health menace." . "
Alerts Described
The first , alert can be called
when ozone polluting materials
content, in the air reaches .50
parts per million parts of air.
The second alert is called when
the ozone contents hits 10 and
a third alert, when a strike of
emergency can be declared by
the governor, is set at 1.5.
The ozone concentration yes
terday reached .90 in the indus
trial center of Vernon and .85
in downtown Los Angeles. The
,90 was the highest recorded
since the APCD started, keeping
records on ozone content about
19 months ago.

linois Corn Yield
Greatest in Country '

linois outranks all other states
in corn productivity per acre,
according to a study of Andreas
Grotewold of the University of
Chicago.
Grotewold told a recent meet
ing of the, Illinois Academy -of
Science that Illinois has jumped
its per acre corn yields 45 per
cent above the national average.
He credited four factors for the
big increase in the past 20 years:
Hybrid seed corn, more abun
dant and effective use of fertil
izers;' mechanization of farms,
and improvement in crop rota
tion. -
The report said hybrid seed
was the most important fafitor
in increasing Illinois corn pro
duction and that all of the state's
corn acreage has been planted
to hybrid seed since 1949.
Mechanization also has been
important. It helps corn growers
in the northern part of the state
overcome the disadvantage of a
shorter growing season, and
farmers in the southern claypan
soil areas can cultivate the soil
more thoroughly.
