termined. Faure may well fall if he fails
French premiers are expendable,
but if he falls it will be up to his
successor, or one of his succes

500,000 French colonists.
It extends from the Atlantic
ocean to the burning sands of
the Sahara Desert. France's
stake in its 158,000 square miles
is enormous.
It is almost forgotten now that
Moroccan resistance to foreign
rule nearly caused the prema
ture outbreak of World War I,
and that it did lead indirectly
to the overthrow of King Al
fonso XIII of Spain.
Morocco's history goes back
more than 1000 years before
Christ, when its coast was dot
ted with Phoenecian villages.
Next came the-Carthagenians.
Augustus Caesar made it the
Roman province of Mauretania.
Arab Status
Morocco's status as an Arab
country dates back to 682 when
the Arabians started invading
it from the east.
Out of this gred the Moorish
Empire which extended across
North Africa to the Egyptian
frontier.
The Arabs were so powerful
then that , they managed . to in
vade Spain and establish them
selves in it. Later their pirati
cal sea rovers ranged as far as
the English coast.
Morocco's present status dates
from the turn of the century
when France, Britain and Ger
many became interested in it.
France won out.
Rebellion Against France
But there was a rebellion, one
of many, against France in 1911.
Germany took ' advantage of it
to send its gunboat Panther to
Agadir, and toyed with the idea
of intervention. German Foreign
Minister Alfred von Kiderlin-
Waechter was ready to go to
war.
Kaiser Wilhelm II and Chan
cellor Theobald von Bethmann
Hollweg opposed him. David
Lloyd George settled that mat
ter when he announced that
Britain would go to war beside
France if necessary.
Then, after World War I, came
the great revolt of Abdel Krim
in Spanish Morocco. The Span
ish Army, was routed. Spain
and France together defeated
Abdel Krim. But the revolt was,
the beginning of the end for
King Alfonso. 1

A few days ago, a fabulously
interesting educational experi
ment was announced: Its pur
pose is to locate young men and
young women of HIGH APTI
TUDE and enable them to go to
college regardless of their finan
cial means.
Under this program, at least
200 of next June's cream-of-the-crop
high school and prep school
students will be given four-year
college scholarships. The schol
arships will be given to winners
of a nationwide competition, re
gardless of their financial means.
The AMOUNTS, of the scholar
ships will range from a token
$100-a-year to those students
who do not need financial help
to FULL TUITION AND LIV
ING COSTS for four years.
THE purpose of it?
It is to find and train LEAD
ERS for the United States of
America. It is prompted by the
belief that too much leadership
material is going to waste in our
country because too many young
people who have the necessary
qualifications are unable to go
to college to get the training
they need to become leaders in
industry, science and Ngovern
ment. That is the story in a nutshell.
VlfHERE is the money to come
from?
The program is to be financed
at the start by $20,500,000 pro
vided by the Ford Foundation
and the Carnegie Corporation of
New York. Our . great corpora
tions arid bur very ' wealthy in
dividuals will be encouraged to
contribute to the fund in order
to keep the program going.
WHAT is it the Good Book
' says? You - will find it in
Matthew (19:24):
"It is easier for a camel to go
through the eye of a needle than
for a rich man to enter into the
kingdom of God."
THOSE are rough words. But
- we must consider the times
and the circumstances in which
they were spoken. There came
to Jesus (it was on the coasts of
Judea, which are still troubled
by man's inhumanity to man) a
young man who had kept all the
conventions.. He hadn't murder
ed anybody. He hadn't lied. He
hadn't stolen. "

Reading in the history books

ago, it isn't hard to believe that

efit of the common run of the
people of their day.

of high aptitude to go to college
and become leaders in the world
of today, regardless of their fi
nancial . means, is started off

crow the first year, a hawk the
second, and a great horned owl

As for subleasing, a wood
pecker's sublessee list is per
haps the most imposing. Take
the gila woodpecker and gilded
flickers of Southern Arizona.
These birds hollow out nest cav
ities in the cactus trunks of the
saguara and these in turn be
come the abode of the elf owl,
pigmy owl,' scheech owl, spar
row hawk, ash-throated fly
catcher, martin, crested fly
catcher, cactus wren, and Lucy's
warbler. Besides they have been
the homes of scaly lizards,
snakes, rats and mice.
When snows blow, the tiny
deer- mouse - family may often
be found safely tucked into a
discarded red-winged black
bird's nest. In northern woods,
tree swallows, house wrens,
bluebirds and woodmice. quite
frequently take up their abode
in woodpecker's hewed-out cav
ity. And to this list, add squir
rels.
lAs for man's two' uses of old
nests, in the Far East myriads
of tiny swiftlets make nests en
tirely, from the secretion of their
salivary glands. This material
is almost 50 per cent protein.
Once the nest has served its pur
pose, it is gathered, washed, and
dried for the trade and a luc
rative trade, the price often ex
ceeding $25 h pound.
The second use is eiderdown.
This comes from eider ducks.
In the far north, this bird grows
a special nuptial down which it
plucks from its breast to line
the nest. Extremely light, elas-.
tic and an excellent nonconduc
tor of heat, this material is har
vested when the bird first lines
her nest with it and also when
the nest is abandoned, each nest
yielding perhaps an ounce of the
precious down.

Planners Say Shrub,
Tree Proposal Would
Encourage

cerning trees and shrubbery.

week, would tend to increase the
number of shade trees in Med
ford,' planning commission
members said today. V
The ordinance', a "model" one
prepared by the bureau of mu
nicipal research and service at
the University of Oregon in co
operation with the League of
Oregon Cities, aims at the beau
tification of Oregon's municipal
ities, they pointed out.
The city . planners, . in discus
sions leading up to their rec
ommendation, have pointed out
that trees ; and shrubbery add
greatly to the looks of every
town, and they feel the plant
ing of trees should be encour
aged, not discouraged.
Would Serve Better
One reason for recommending
the proposed .ordinance; they
said, ,was because existing city
regulations - prohibit planting
of trees in parking strips. The
proposed ordinance would also
serve the purpose of protecting
sidewalks, streets and sewers
from damage by tree roots bet
ter than does the simple ban on
trees, they pointed out, by des
ignating which trees are danger
ous to utilities when planted in
parking strips, and by providing
that trees which become nui
sances can be, removed.
It was also pointed out that
FHA ' regulations encourage the
planting of trees because they,
increase property Values. The
proposed ordinance provides
rules for. the planting of trees
in parking strips only, and not
elsewhere on private property
except for varieties which might
