Denver (U.R) Backstairs at

Cadets in the first class of the

Not until he paid his first
visit to the academy Sunday and

restricted to the academy area

Mr. Eisenhower didn't know
it but a trash fire just outside
the Summer White House head
quarters building at Lowry al
most caused a furor the other
day.
Trash caught fire in a box-like
container about the size of an
old-fashioned outhouse, appar
ently from a smoldering cigar
ette. But a cool-headed airman
avoided any excitement by calm
ly calling for a crash truck from
tlfe landing field. Instead of fire
engines arriving with sirens,
the crash vehicle quietly rolled
up, subdued the flames, and
hauled off the smoking trash
container with no disturbance
to the White House offices. '
The President has become so
enthusiastic about his golf, game
on his current Colorado stay
that he sometimes packs in 36
holes a day on the rolling, well
kept course at Cherry Hills
Country Club.

Trees and Homes
Bill Bell and his two sons
were enthusiastic builders 01
house models, back in the early
1930s.. They turned out images
of handsome, sturdy, well-
equipped homes that could be
built full scale anywhere ior
$3,500 or less. The Bell boys
were then of high school age.
Ten miniature models, as I re
member, made the central ex
hibit of the Western, Retail
Lumbermen's association' ' con
vention at Portland in 1938. The
setting was one of streets, gra
dens, trees and lights. Shining
out In giant letters on a green
backdrop were these bold
words: "TIMBER IS A CROP
THE HARVEST IS HOMES."
Those models, produced by
Bell and his . two . sons, .were

headquarters office as soon as
possible each morning and often
tries to get in 18 holes before
lunch and another 18 afterward.
Mr. Eisenhower s scores are
still closely-guarded secrets, but
reports indicate that his putting
which often plagues his game
considerably improved.
Mrs. Louise Brotzman, attrac
tive . blonde wife of Donald
Brotzman, 33-year-old Republi
can candidate for the Colorado
governorship in 1954, was "dy
ing" for a chance to meet Mr.
Eisenhower when the couple was
suddenly invited to the Summer
White House for an early morn
ing appointment with the Presi
dent. Reporters were working over
Brotzman afterward for details
of the meeting. He turned to his
wife and asked if she could think
of ' anything elsa that was dis
cussed.
"I don't remember," she said.
"I was too thrilled at meeting
the President."
tions all over the United States.
Next year they were renewed
for the exhibit ..of the West
Coast Lumberman's association
at San Francisco's world's fair.
The FHA Siory
The exhibit appealed because
it was something new in the use
of scale models of houses. Pre
viously the scale model was an
architectural device , for demon
stration of mansions of highest
cost and elegant design. The
Bell idea was to employ the
miniature home to educate the
public, in the values of a lumber
dwelling that could be built and
possessed by a family for down
payment of a few hundred dol
lars and small monthly payments.-'
-
Bill Bell, then as now, manag
ing director of the Western Re
tail Lumbermen's association,
was first of all a teacher. And
as such he became a national
educational leader in a business
that today numbers 26,000 re
tail lumber stores and yards.
Incalculable damage was done
to lumber In 1933 by the mis
called National Recovery act.
Bill Bell, like other well-posted
lumber leaders, was awake to
the revolutionary menace of
NRA. And he was also versed In
the constructive recovery prin
ciples that Herbert Hoover had
urged in vain on the Congress
of 1931-1932.
The Home Owners Loan cor
poration was. a Hoover idea
originally. So wag the Federal
Housing administration, with
standard home loan amortized
over a long term of years, con
servatively Insured by the gov
ernment, permitting a smaller
home down payment than had
ever been known in the United
States.
The Hoover Ideas were writ
ten into the FHA act of 1934
but without credit to him. Bill
Bell demonstrated its values in
the building market so well that
he was eventually elected chair
man of the Education commit
tee of the National Retail Lum
ber Dealers association and
there he stands today.
'Contemporary Homes
The groundwork of long ago
came alive again a spell back,
when Bill Bell and I got to
gether. Once again we had miniature
house models of contemporary
Western homes to demonstrate
with samples of the species and
grades and sizes of West Coast
lumber that are used to build
them nation-wide today.
Bill Bell's thought today is on
things new in home building
and design and lumber use. The
training course for retail lum
ber salesmen that he started a
few years ago at the University
of Washington has been adopted
by schools across the country
He works to keep it up to date.
And more ideas of lumber education-
are on the Bill list for
the fall meeting of the execu
tives of the regional retail trade
associations. I
