Morris, ousted head of the dis
sention ridden Men's Reforma
tory here, Saturday criticized his
successor and Board of Control
officials for their handling of
the latest not at the institution.
Morris, in a scathing attack,
said if Supt. M. L. Wimberley
and Board Administrative As
sistant Harold Peterson had
taken the advice of top staff
members at the Reformatory, the
riot and fire Friday would not
have occurred.

said, recommended that no force
be used to break a sitdown strike
which mushroomed into a full

Filed in Portland
Portland (U.R) Six marine
libel actions were filed in Fed
eral Court here Friday against
owners and masters of motor
boats charged by the Coast
Guard with violating the fed
eral motorboat act.
The Columbia - River Packers
Association is defendant in five
of the suits. The other defend
ant is R. D. Voile, a Warrenton
fisherman.
The government asks $1100
in fines for alleged violations
which include failure to have
proper safety equipment aboard
The motorboat act requires
such equipment and other safe
guards. The Coast Guard is
charged with enforcing the act
and has power to assess fines.
In the six cases filed Friday
the Coast Guard claims the de
fendants have failed to pay fines
levied against them.
The eight drownings during
the recent lower Columbia river
salmon derbies drew attention
to the federal law which seldom
has been invoked.

The shipment is intended to
show whether or not mining of

be economically feasible.

but this will be the first ship
ment from Oregon.

One inmate shot in the Friday
riot, Luis Morales, 28, San An
tonio, Texas, was reported , in
fair condition at a Lincoln hos
pital Saturday.
Wimberley said all the 300 in
mates of the institution were
"quiet all night and Saturday
morning."

Morris said Saturday penal ad
ministrators must be "tough but
fair" in handling inmates.
A strong and outspoken critic
of state penal practices and ad
ministrators, Morris said: "I can
not understand the thinking, if
you could call it that, of the
Board of Control, Peterson, or
anyone in the Governor's office
who might have been involved in
a decision to use force when
force was not needed."
"They deliberately, by that
decision to use force involved
150 men in a disastrous effort
to combat that force which se
verely wounded one of the men."
"Even if Wimberley and Pet
erson had been experienced,
qualified persons they would not
have been able to handle that
situation yesterday, walking into
it cold like they did," Morris
said.
"But had they been exper
ienced they would have taken
the advice of top staff members
who have been at the institution
more than 10 years, who know
the individuals they're dealing
with and who understand a
group's potential action.
TJiey were advised by such
staff members not to use force
but disregarded that advice."
Uia Force
Officials used teargas and gun
fire to break the hour-long riot,
forcing about 150 men back into
their cells. Officials said about
two dozen men led the rebellion
which developed from a sitdown
strike early Friday in which in
mates protested the firing of
Morris, complained of food, and
about letter writing privileges.

most abused words in the show
business lexicon are "star,"
"comeback" and "Cinderella."
Hollywood's publicists and
journalistic homers long ago
robbed "star" of its true mean
ing with a thoroughness that
caused even those not toiling
in the celluloid vineyard to be
infected. An actor who takes
time out to go around the block
for a parcel of cigarets better
make it a fast trip lest he be
hailed as making a comeback
upon his return.
This season the historians of
Broadway are on a Cinderella
kick. There are more Cinder-
ellas than the- best-heeled prince
would care to supply with slip
pers.
The one attracting the most
attention because of the
eminence of her sponsors is
Judy Tyler, a petite, pert burn-
ette singer with a truly viva
cious charm who will be the
ingenue lead in the new Rich
ard Rodgers-Oscar Hammer-
stein m u s ic a 1 play. "Pipe
Dream," their first new work
in more than two years.

Tapped For Title Role
Tammy has been tapped for
the title role in "The Amazing
Adele," a musical comedy adapt
ed by Anita Loos from a French
play. Miss Loos first discovered
her leading lady in a student
production at the neighborhood
playhouse last spring.
Another virtually unknown
actress assigned to an important
chore is Jacqueline Scott of
Sikeston, . Mo., who has been
studying around here for some
time and finally was spotted by
playwright Moss Hart in a Hun
ter College production. She has
been cast as the 19-year-old girl
who plays a prominent part in

musical, "Plain and Fancy." .

Senanator Morse Asks
ICC Car Supply Probe

Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore.)
has announced that he has asked
the Interstate Commerce com
mission to conduct "a very
searching investigation and
study of the freight car shortage
problem." .
"For several weeks my office
has been in touch with the Inter
state Commerce Commission as
well as other agencies, both
public and private, in an effort
to assist Oregon businessmen
who are now subjected to the
severe handicap of the freight
car shortage. However, the
blunt fact is that these agencies
have not been able to resolve
the problem: it has grown pro
gressively worse," Senator
Morse said.
Referring to charges of dis
crimination against Oregon ship
pers and alleged favoritism of
California shippers on the part
of the Southern Pacific company
in distributing freight cars, Sen
ator Morse pointed out that the
information he has received in
dicates that the car shortage is
most acute in the areas of Ore
gon where the Southern Pacific
Railroad offers the sole source
of rail freight transportation. He
observed, "If the Southern Pa
cific is in fact discriminating
against Oregon in the distribu
tion of freight cars, it is a prac
tice that cannot be endured much
longer by Oregbn lumber pro
ducers in the category of small
business."

In addition, he asked ICC to reap
praise the whole rail freight
transportation system at the ear
liest possible date.
After referring to figures
showing extremely favorable net
railway operating income aver
aging over $1,000,000,000 per
year for American class one rail
ways between 1950 and 1954,
Senator Mprse commented,
"These figures lend strong sup
port to the tft-repeated charge
that the American railroads are
concentrating ' too heavily on
amassing profits and too little on
rendering the American public
the kind of rail service to which
it is entitled."
