nation in packing vegetables for
market, the Wisconsin Canner's
Association reports, with some
30,000 acres in gardens which
produce one-fifth of the nation's
pack.
The Wisconsin pack totals al
most as much as is produced in
the rest of the world outside the

Sea Monster Proves
To Be Two Sturgeon

Diver Wayne Truttman has
solved the mystery of a "'sea
monster" which had been re
ported by several sober, reliable
persons, including sheriffs dep
uties on duty.
The reports described the
aquatic stranger as seven to
eight feet long, with a humped
back. When observers ap
proached, the "animal" disap
peared in a fierce churning of
water.
Truttman went down into the
waters of the bay and got a good
look at two seven-foot sturgeon
which apparently have been
feeding near the shore. The fins
of the sturgeon were apparently
mistaken for humps when they
protruded from the water.

A Fool and His Arthritis
Mind, now, credulous one, I
do not say that chronic arthritis
may not happen now and then,
although no medical authority,
so far as I am aware, sustains
by sound pathology a diagnosis
of "chronic arthritis" as a spe
cific ailment.
I do say, and I think I can
sustain this statement with
sound pathology, that in most
cases purporting to be "chronic
arthritis," there is not now and
there has not been any indica
tion of inflammation of the joint
tissues (except from accidental
cause) and therefore the joint
disability is not "arthr-itis" at
all. In at least nine cases out
of ten, joint disability of more
than a year in duration is actu
ally what I call rheumatiz, rheu
matiz, if you please, not rheu
matism. I'm sorry about the word, but
I've learned by experience how
difficult it is to persuade peo
ple to use a new word or to cor
rect wrong use of an old one.
Probably 99 out of a 100 readers
do not use the words cri and vite
and have no idea what the words
mean. And it took many years
to . persuade newspaper people
to quit calling amnesia aphasia."
Nevertheless, I hope every
reader with joint disability of
long duration will send me a
stamped, self-addressed envelope
and ask for the pamphlet Calci
um and Rheumatiz. Please do so,
even if you have been through
the best advertised clinic or are
being treated for "arthritis" by
a specialist.
The common kind of joint dis
ability I call rheumatiz develops
insidiously. It creeps up on you.
Except from accident or strain
there is nothing inflammatory
about the joint trouble, just a
gradual development of sore
ness, lameness, pain aqd dis
ability through a period of
months or years. In short, the
trouble is physical degeneration
of joint tissues.
For that matter, as a student
of, though by no means an au
thority on pathology, I question
the validity of the concept of
chronic inflammation in any cii
cumstance. In every such in
stance, the actual ' condition, I
believe, is not inflammation at
all, but degeneration. If I'm
wrong about this, I'll be grate
ful to physician or pathologist
who can or will set me right
and needless to say, I'll never
reveal the identity of such men
tor without his or her written
consent. .
Degeneration is thus defined
in Stedman's Medical Diction
ary: A retrogressive pathological
change in cells or tissues in
consequence of which the
functioning power is lost and
the living substance becomes
converted into an inert mass.
(Dr. Stedman meant to say the
functioning power is impaired,
I'm sure.)
As I indicate in the pamphlet,
the cause of the joint degenera
tion which I call rheumatiz is
nutritional deficiency through
the years from early childhood
