Workers From Upper
Peninsula Work Hard
Detroit (U.R) Workers in
Michigan's upper peninsula are
as v much as 10 to 15 per cent
more productive than those of
some other areas, according to
a report by the Michigan Socie
ty of Industrial Realtors.
The report attributed the ef
fectiveness of the workers to
"an adaptability to changing
production methods and excel
lent attitudes toward their jobs."
It also credited workers' loyal-
ty and "invigorating weather"
with increasing worker produc
tivity. Unlike most other regions,
the report said, labor force fig
ures do not accurately indicate
the actual availability' of quali
fied workers in the upper penin;
sula. In the past, it said, it has
been found that new industrial
opportunities in the region are
usually accompanied by a large
scale return of former residents
to fill the jqb openings.
Cockroach Has Knack
For Self-Adjustment
Los Angeles (U.R) Scientists
have proved that the pesky and
hardy rockroach has a knack for
surviving temperature changes.
Whereas most insects seem un
able to adjust to drops in tem
perature, the cockroach varies
its oxygen intake with . the
change and continues to drive
housewives wild.
Zoologists Dr. Paul Dehnel
and Dr. Earl Segal of U.C.L.A.
discovered this ability of the
rockroach by experimenting
with a set of insects which had
led a sheltered life.
The insects had been kept at
a constant temperature of 80 de
grees Fahrenheit or three gener
ations. They then were subjected
to changes lower than 80 de
grees but they simply compen
sated for the change and went
right ' on existing. And the
younger the rockroach the bet
ter it adjusts to new surround
ings, the doctors added.

The Bearded Man ...
In' the main the Lewis and
Clark sesquicentennial observ
ances are to be applauded, as is
the Fort Clatsop restoration. But
one minor characteristic of most
of them is a thing to be deplored,
if not denounced. This is the
beard fetish.
It is a growing common delief
that all of our early American
pioneers of the male gender
were not only fur traders but fur
bearers. Poets too, by the way.
Offhand, wouldn't you say that
Longfellow, Lowell, Whitman,
Wittier and Bryant were bearded
bards?
But before 1860 or at least
betore 1850 these old poets
were as clean-shaven- as Abe Lin
cola. So were Lee, Grant, Stone
wall Jackson, and even Ruther
ford Buchard Hayes. The Oregon
pioneers of the covered wagons
decade were whiskerless, too, as
were the Rev. Jason Lee and Dr.
Marcus Whitman before them.
So were Lewis and Clark and all
their lads, of course.
Martyr Palmer ...
Historians ignored the beard
business in their works until
Stewart Holbrook joined their
society. One of his most mov
ing essays is the chapter on the
martyrdom of Joseph Palmer, of
Fitchburg, Mass., to the cause of
whiskers.
It was Palmer who grew the
first chin brush in a nation of
shave-faces. "When Joe Palmer
came to town wearing a beard
in 1830," states Historian Hol
brook, "whiskers had been virtu
ally non-existent for at least a
hundred years." But Palmer de
fiantly sported "one of the most
magnificent growths ever seen
in the United States, a regular
he-beard of the Old Testament
size." ,
Terrible things began to hap
pen to Palmer, who quoted the
Scriptures in . defense of his
beard growing. On a visit to Bos
ton he was followed by a jeering
crowd that threw stones and
came near to mobbing him. In
Fitchburg he was denied commu
nion in his church. Four men at
tacked him with the purpose of
shaving him under duress. He
fought them off, but he was
jailed. Then his jailer brought
in a gang to force a. shave on
Palmer. He beat them too, as he
did all others who tried to trim
him below the ears.
Refusing to pay a fine for dis
turbing the peace, Joe Palmer
was kept in jail. However, he
smuggled out. letters in which
he eloquently defended his right
as an American Christian to
grow whiskers any .'day of the
week and twice on Sunday.
Popular sentiment for the mar
tyr began to bud. Palmer refused
freedom as such, without recog
nition of his individual rights.
In the end, Palmer won this
recognition, and with it consid
erable celebrity. Noted reform
ers in other fields took him in.'
Palmer followers began to mul
tiply. He lived until 1875, when

was at the peak of its glory, and
ever bore his triumph humbly.
The Singe Shave ...
The shave was a particular re
quirement on the early Frontier.
There were no bearded loggers
before the 1860s. Shaving in the
timber has its. items of folklore.
They tell that the axman with
bark on him would shave with
his own ax. And there was the
timber beast who drove his-stub-ble
in with a hammer, then bit it
off inside. I've seen loggers
shave with a lighted candle in
my own time.
So it was with the young men
of the Lewis and Clark Expedi
tion as with the sailors of Cap
tains Gray, Vancouver, Meares,
Cook, Martinez and a Perouse.
Holbrook notes that while -the
Pilgrim Fathers of 1620 all wore
beards the Founding Fathers of
1776 did not. Even Generals
Ethen Allen, John Stark and
Israel Putnam were smooth
shaven men. No signer of the
Declaration of Independence had
a sign of hair on his face.
Lincoln was the first Presi
dent to flaunt a whisker. McKin-
ley was the first President after
Lincoln to have a hairless face.
Theodore Roosevelt . and Taf t
were mustache men. Woodrow
Wilson and all the rest have
worn full shaves.

All-Weather Punch
Given Naval Flyer
In New Devices
Washington (U.RJ--America'Si
aircraft industry has succeeded
in giving U. S. naval aviation
an all-weather punch in the suc
cessful development of an elec
tronic device that can auto
matically land a plane upon a
carrier deck, no matter how la
verse the weather.
Planes, official publica&bn of
the Aircraft Industries Associa
tion, says that one of the most
difficult single maneufers per
formed by naval aviators Is the
final approach and landing of
modern high - sseed aircraft
aboard a carrier at sea.
During periods of poor vis-
ibility rain, snow or fog the
physical demands upon both
make the task of "setting down"
virtually impossible. As a result
carrier operations are usually
halted in such weather. To give
Navy airmen auVgtather capa
bility, one aircraft company has
developed a landing system com
bining both radio and radar.
Radar Used .
The first step in the system
involves the use of radar, a very
precise unit on shipboard which
locates the plane to be landed.
It then determines the plane's
altitude and position in relation
to the flight deck. These figures
are fed into an electronic
computer, which compares the
aircraft's position with what its
landing position should be, in
stantaneously determines the .
correct course and transmits the
information to the device aboard
the incoming plane. The auto
matic "pilot" then directs the
plane Into the proper flight pat
tern, determines rate of descent.
corrects course, etc.
The speed of the carrier is
electronically computed and its
exact position, its pitch and roll
at the instant the plane is to
touch the deck, is calculated and
transmitted automatically to the
plane's automatic pilot device.
In addition to the increase in
fleet combat capability, the new
system promises to be a real
boon to wounded pilots' unable
to bring in their planes in any
weather.
