Tom will have charge of the
dog teams. He will have to care
for some 30 huskies. He doesn't
have them yet, but Tom knows
lot about dogs. ,
"They'll all be huskies," the
dogman said, "but they have to
be carefully picked. The Eski
mos are rough on their dogs and
vou can't trust them. We want to
take our own. The bids are oui
and we'll get them. Somebody in
Colorado offered us a lead dog
for $1,000. We couldn't 'afford
that." '
But even before he gets his
30, dogs, Tom is worried about
what to do about dog mittens.
When you turn a dog loose in
the ice country, he told me, you
have to worry about their paws.
So we are having some spec
ial mittens or 'footles' to protect
them," the sergeant said. "Ice
cuts a dog's feet."
Tom, who already has spent
10 years in the Arctic, is going
to miss his bride, Rita. He may
be gone for something like 18
months. - - .
Other Nations Going Along
That is why he has -knitting
needles. Our Uncle Sam, a very
thoughtful fellow, has provided
the crews of the vessels with do-it-yourself
notions. One of them
is knitting. Other things are met
al and wood work. :
Tom told "me that his wife
really wasn't interested in a hat
made from wool yarn. Something
about lambs' wool gives her the
hiccoughs, she said. So he is
thinking about saving up some
hair from his dogs.
'If I can talk the Government
into loaning me a - spinning
wheel," he said, "I may have it
made: . Those puppies really sned
a lot of hair .. . . and it makes
mighty fine yarn,". I ,'.underi

But his sign-off from cinema
and' stage at. the height of his
career is a matter of "personal
ity," not size, his parents say.
"His teen years are a little too
imnortant for his own judg
ment,", explained papa Frederic
de Wilde.
"We want him to finish col
lege and then make up his own

manager for "Bus Stop." "He's
really not impressed .with : his
success. We've never tried to
give him the star treatment and
we discourage others from doing
that "He wants a newspaper
route but 'other parents would
criticize us.
'It's rather difficult," the
young father added, "to teach
him to earn money when he al
