Digitalis and ths Heart
The credulity of physicians is
attested by the vast amount of
poppycock in medical literature
concerning the effects of digital
is on the heart.
Here's good illustration of
the way many physicians think
(or rather do not think) about
it. When I tried to assure poor
souls with the "weak heart"
obsession that they shouldn't
worry about taking digitalis a
well advertised practitioner who
calls himself a heart specialist
jumped into print to warn the
poor "souls that many a poor
soul lives from day to day only
because he or she takes a daily
nip of digitalis! Other than that,
not a peep did we hear from
the medical profession, then or
since.
Now I beg to reassure every
one who has or thinks he or
she has a "weak" heart that
digitalis does not and cannot
(V, increase the strangth of the
heart, (2) make the heart func
tion more efficiently or (3) keep
the heart beating when it would
cease to beat without digitalis.
How physicians got such weird
notions about digitalis I can't
comphrehend. Since they do not
deign to explain to the likes
of me or even to students who
take them seriously I am con
strained to ascribe it to the
traditional fondness of doctors
for appearing wise. Most dumb
laymen think a doctor who
doesn't explain anything has
great wisdom.
Several times I have quoted
here, from a standard medical
textbook, what I consider a typi
cal bit of medical hokum about
digitalis, to wit:
' "Therapeutically it" (digital
is) "enables the damaged heart
to do more work with the same
expenditure of energy."
I have asked physicians, phy
siologists, physicists or others
who are qualified to have an
opinion to tell rhe how more
work can be performed without
expending more energy.
Understand clearly, I do not
advise anyone who takes digital
is under his or her physician's
care or supervision to stop tak
ing it without the doctor's con

sued a 38-page booklet telling
grocery clerks how to become
better grocery clerks.
The department's advice boils
down to "work smarter not
harder." This conclusion was
reached after a survey con
ducted by the research division
of the Agricultural Marketing
Service. The researchers had as
sistance from many individuals
and organizations in the retail
food industry and from Michi
gan State College.
The survey was designed to
improve the efficiency and pro
ductivity of retail food store
employees through better tech
niques of personnel manage
ment. The department said partici
pation of grocery clerks in pro
grams designed to improve their
work resulted in wider accept
ance of improved methods, bet
ter use of work time, and in
creased sales per clerk-hour.
The survey showed that an
employee will accept new meth
ods more quickly and smarten
up more rapidly if he can dis
cuss them openly with his man
ager and feels that he is a part
of the program to get better
use of his time.
