Benson Admits
To Veak Spots
In Farm Economy
Bioomington, 111. fU.Rj Agri
culture Secretary Ezra Taft Ben
son admitted today there are
weak spots" on the nation's
farm economy and said the Eisen
hower Administration is "not
content" with the farm price
and income picture.
Benson said farmers "are not
sharing as fully as I would like"
in the current "unprecedented"
prosperity, but added "I am con
vinced there are better days
ahead."
"There are weak spots in our
agricultural economy but funda
mentally it is sound and
healthy," Benson said.
Bumps on Road Ahead
"There will be bumps along
the road ahead, just as there
have been in the past," he said.
"But there will be smooth
stretches, too."
Benson, in a speech prepared
for delivery at the Bioomington
Pantaeranh's Farm and Soil
Day, said the nation has been
undergoing a transition "from a
war economy to one more closely
geared to normal markets and
conditions."
Research Important
Benson stressed the import
ance of a step-up in research and
education programs as "perhaps
the greatest single contribution
government can make to Ameri
can agriculture." He touched on
the possibilities of using "atoms
for agriculture."
"We have an atom-powered
submarine," he said. "Why not
an atom-powered tractor some
day?"
Benson said atomic research
also may devise more effective
ways of using fertilizers, and
find a cheap way to remove salt
from sea water for irrigation of
desert areas.
Berserk Soldier
Awaiting Trial at
Time of Shooting
Broadstairs, England (U.R)
Airman Napoleon Green ran
amok and shot up a U.S. air base
just four hours before he was to
appear before a court martial on
suspicion of stealing and slash
ing an English girl, it was re
ported today.
The 21-year-old supply clerk
went on a two-hour rampage
yesterday, killing three persons
and wounding nine others. He
fired two fatal bullets into his
body after he was pursued and
trapped on a crowded Kent coast
beach.
Sources at the Manston Air
Base said Green, of Chicago, was
scheduled for a hearing at 1 p.m.
on suspicion of stealing S120
from the wallet of another
soldier and of a throat-slashing
attack on a British girl, Norma
Crosbie, 19.
Good Soldier
But his commanding officer
said Green was a "good soldier
q . . who jumped his trolley."
An Air Force spokesman said
that Green had denied stealing
the money and that an investiga
tion of the charge "was still in
progress at the time he went
berserk."
He said he knew "nothing
about the report that Green als
was under investigation for an
alleged attack on a British girl.
The only other casualty that
was involved in Green's ram
page was only slightly injured
and returned to duty today. He
was T. Sgt. John M. Gouviea,
35, Sant'a Clara, Calif.

Quotes From the News
By UNITED PRESS
Dr. Francis W. Reichelderfer, chief of the Weather Bureau, on
the possibility of breaking up hurricanes by seeding them with dry
ice:
"We are willing to try it. We are scientifically very much inter
ested in seeing what would' happen, but we can't guarantee any
results. I doubt that it will work."
Lilly Ruth .Green, 23, sister of Chicago Airman Napoleon
Green who ran amok in England and killed three persons:
"He liked the Air Force and seemed quite happy about being in
Britain."
John M. Jacobs, one of the group of American farmers who
recently returned to the U.S. from a tour of Russian farms:
"Production in the U.S.S.R. is not up to that of the United
States in either quantity or quality. It is going to be hard for them
to step .up their production until they permit planning at the
local level."
John L. Kennedy, 24-year-old Army corporal who was elected
to the Mississippi state Legislature:
"I won without taking a stand on segregation because the
people like me and trust me. In Mississippi politics are decided
more on personalities than on issues."
Weather Bureau spokesman in a report on Hurricane Edith
which was then located 750 miles east-northeast of San Juan, P.R.:
"We won't be able to tell where it's headed for at least two or
three days. But this one has a good chance of staying at sea. The
thing was just developing into a hurricane while the Air Force
hurricane hunter plane was flying into it."
Army Secretary Wilber M. Brucker on rehabilitation activities
in flooded northeast states:
"All relief requests to the Army have been or are being met."
Russian farm expert Vladimir Mateskevich in summing up im
pressions of his tour of American farmlands on a Voice of America
broadcast:
"We saw many interesting and useful things which can be used
in the Soviet Union. I wouldn't be frank . . . however if I said that
we liked everything we saw."
Chairman James P. Richards (D-S.C.) of the House Foreign
Affairs Committee on Russia's current "charm" policy:
"I frankly look upon the current developments as no more
than a resting period or a breathing spell in their long term drive
toward world conquest."
Nude Youngster Lost
For 15 Hours Found
Cassville, Mo. (U.R) A two-year-old
boy, who toddled away
from his home without a stitch
of clothing on his back, was
found early today, "cold but
unharmed," after being lost for
15 hours in the rugged Ozark
Hills of Southern Missouri.
Little Gail Tahlor apparently
wandered into the brush yester
day afternoon as his mother was
preparing to give him a bath.
Mrs. Bessie Edwards and her
16-year-old son, Joe, heard a

Sheriff's Deputy George
Smith said the child was rushed
to Cassville Community Hos

'No Paycheck, No Wife1
Issued To
Chicago U.R) Mrs. Esther
Quigley, a modern "Lysistrata,"
issued a "no paycheck, no wife"
ultimatum to her strikeleader
husband today. Her husband's
union promptly called it a com
pany plot.
Mrs. Quigley, a 35-year-old
blonde, served notice that if her
husband, Andrew, isn't back at
the job by Monday he doesn't
ever have to come home.
She's already locked the 230
pound shop steward out of the
house.
The strike bound Harrison
Sheet Steel Company meanwhile
added fuel to the fight by an
nouncing that it will go out of
business unless the men get back
to work by Monday.

Ultimatum
Lysistrata was a determined

her husband always trotting off
to the wars. She persuaded the
other women of the town to take
the romance out of their mar

fighting. The plot worked like a
charm and the war ended.
Mrs. Quigley is putting much
the same stratagem to work on
the economic front. She has
already organized a march of

prevents him from going back,
