Interior Douglas McKay said last
night he has no intention of
adopting "state socialism" in
Qthe development of the nation's
resources in areas where the
work can better be done by local
enterprise.
In a review of the Interior De
partment's policies and accom
plishments before the Portland
Izaak Walton league, McKay
a fain took exception, to critics

The Secretary said the depart-
ment "has not and will not sur

naid informant. He received

in a series of trials and in other

closed."
The figures were released in
answer to a request made of
Atty. Gen. Herbert Brownell Jr.
at a news conference four
months ago. He was asked for an
analvsis of the salaries rjaid to
full time consultants as against

scooter owners about excessive
noise after hearing two cases in
court this week involving teen
agers. Excessive noise of newly
purchased motor scooters
brought many complaints.

motor scooter operators that
owners must have operator's li

Besides Lautner, other well
known former Communists have
been paid consultation fees and
expenses for their work in "pro
ceedings as yet undisclosed."
They were Louis Budenz, former
editor of the Daily Worker and
now a Fordham University pro
fessor; turnabout witnesses Har
vey Matusow and Frank Lowell
Watson; former Com munist
Paul Crouch and Leonard Patterson.
According to the. department
analysis, neither Crouch nor
Matusow have been used as ex
pert witnesses since July, 1954.
Crouch's testimony has been con
tested in a deportation case
against Chicago cartoonist Jacob
Burch.
Crouch was listed as receiving
S597 from the Internal Security
Division during fiscal 1954, and
S982.65 from the Immigration
