Guild Makes Plans
for Costume Tea
Ashland Tudor guild of the
.Oregon Shakespearean festival
'has planned a costume silver
tea for Sunday, August 23. It
0rn-ill be held at The Hollies in
(Asftland, 912 Siskiyou boule-
(yard, and anyone interested in
the costumes of the festival plays
is invited to attend.
General chairman for the
evwit is Mrs. Rose Tavener Robi
nett. Her committee includes the
hostess chaiman, Mrs. C. Rease
Braley, cMedford; Mrs. Harry
Skerry, Ashland, publicity; Mrs.
A. M. Hill, Ashland, and Mrs.
A. C Allen Jr., Medford. decora
tion: Mrs. Ruth King and Mrs.
R. AV. Pentzer, tea arrange
ments; Mr. Allen, Max Wimmer,
Medford, and Frank Davis,
chairs.
Douglas Russell, chief costu
mier of the festival, and Dr.
Marjery Bailey, festival educa
tion director, will arrange the
program.
This special event was planned
m answer to many requests from
those interested patrons who
wish to view costumes at close
hand and hear discussions on the
subject, the committee states.

Pocahontas lodge will enter

Friday, August 26. The event is

Dinner Meeting
Shady Cove Shady Cove
Lions' auxiliary ' held a dinner
meeting at Rogue River lodge
August 17th. During the business
meeting the budget was adopted
and several projects considered.
Next meeting of the group will
be September 7.

Woman to Attend
Encampment of
VFW Auxiliary
Mrs. Ted Hopkins, Rogue Riv
er, president, Oregon Depart
ment of the Ladies auxiliary to
Veterans of Foreign Wars, will
be in Boston August 28 to Sep
tember 2 to take part in the 42nd
national encampment of the aux
iliary. Mrs. Thomas F. Holz, of
Philadelphia, national president.
will preside over the sessions,
which will be held in Boston's
symphony hall. Encampment
headquarters will be the Hotel
Sheraton-Plaza.
General Charles W. Christen-
berry, New York, president of
the American-Korean founda
tion, will address the delegates
Tuesday, August 30th. During
the past year, the auxiliary has
made aid and education for Kor
ean war orphans one of their
major welfare projects. An
nouncement of large sums given
to cerebral palsy and cancer re
search will also be made.
As a sample of the auxiliary's
volunteer hospital health pro
gram for hospitalized veterans
throughout the nation, there will
be a visit to the Jamaica Plain
veterans' administration hospit
al, Boston, with auxiliary hos
pital representatives from every
state taking part.
"To Help the Living," a doc
umentary film showing the vol
unteer service of the VFW La
dies' auxiliary in every state will
be shown to the delegates. Re
ports of work in Americanism,
youth activities, savings bond
and community service programs
will be presented.
Founded in 1914, VFW auxil
iary has a membership of more
than 375,000 and local auxiliar
ies in 7,000 communities cover
ing the 48 states, Alaska, Ha
waii and the Canal Zone.
Three to Arrive

Miss Joan Duncan, of Hollis,
Long Island, will arrive in the
valley August 27 to spend a va
cation. Miss Duncan and Dr. and
Mrs. Gilson A. Ross, of Eugene,
will visit Gordon R. Ross, son of
the Eugene couple, who is in
Medford for the summer and em
ployed as display advertising
salesman for the Medford Mail
Tribune.
The group plans to attend Ore
gon Shakespearean festival plays
and visit numerous points of in
terest in the valley and Crater
Lake.
Miss Duncan is employed in
the New York City offices of the
Portland-owned Electric Steel
company.

,- Preparations are well under
way for the Fiesta San Gabriel
at Old San Gabriel Mission Sep
tember 2 to 5. Music and dancing
will give a festive air at the cele
bration of the 184th Anniversary
of one of the oldest of missions
in America at San Gabriel,
California.
Visitors will come from all
over the country to join in this
Fiesta on the mission grounds
and to view one of the finest col
lections of mission relics in exist
ence. Especially interesting to all
visitors are the original Indian
paintings representing the Four
teen Stations of the Cross. Strik
ingly primitive, these canvasses
are probably the oldest existing
samples of native Christian
painting.

The missions museum collec-'
tion also boasts several ancient
wooden statues and handwrought
objects of copper, brass and sil
ver which form a part of the
extensive antiques display.
The baptistry, with its ham
mered copper font brought to the
mission from Spain in 1771 as a
present from King Carlos III,
has been the scene of more than
25,000 baptisms. i

the Fiesta period as well as all
through the year are invited to
take a complete tour of the Mis
sions grounds, buildings and mu
seums to enjoy all of the count
less interesting historical fea
tures of Old San Gabriel Mission. ,

The Lemolo No. 1 dam and
powerhouse were the first visit
ed. They are but a few miles
from Diamond Lake and have
been in operation but a few
weeks. Several miles down the
river dinner was served at the
Clearwater camp.
The group then inspected the
Toketee powerhouse from which
all the other powernouses are
controlled. The Lemolo No. 2
forebay and penstock, which are
now under construction, proved
interesting, and the view of the
Toketee dam and Lemolo No. 2
project from some 800 feet up
on the Clearwater No. 2 forebay
proved the most spectacular, the
group reported..
Jeannette Rankin of Montana
was the first woman to be elect
ed to Congress. She was elected
to the 65th Congress, 1917-1919.

Family Members
Here for Reunion
Seven brothers and sisters are
holding a family reunion in Med
ford Here are Mr. and Mrs. Eu
gene Ford and son, and Mr. and
Mrs. Henry Ford and two sons,
all of Mellette, S.D., and Mr.
and Mrs. Leon Remily, Doland,
S.D., and Mrs. J. D. Yokum, Al
bany, Ore. They are visiting in
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe
Kingsley and Mr. and Mrs. Ted
Ford, Route 2, Box 236, Medford,
and Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Ford,

ford. Hugo, Henry, Ted and Eugene
Ford are brothers of Mrs. King
sley, Mrs. Yokum and Mrs. Re
mily. It was the first time the
seven had been together since
1923. ' ; '
The family members are visit
ing other friends and relatives
and points of interest in southern
Oregon. Yesterday they made a
trip to Crater lake. Last Sunday
a picnic was held in Ashland
park. Hugo Ford Jr., and daugh
ter, Linda, drove over from Red
mond, Ore., to join the group
for. the dinner.
Mrs. Eugene Ford is a sister
of C. H. Rawstern, Route 2, Box
236, and Lyle Rawstern, 330
Apple street, Medford, and a
sister-in-law of Mrs. T. F. Am
brose, Ross lane.
Of special interest to the Da
kota families was their tours
through a sawmill and Bear
Creek packing plant.

Has New Member
Eagle Point Mrs. Vernon
Bonebrake, new president of the
Eagle Point Lions club auxil
iary, presided at a potluck din
ner meeting Monday night.
Eleven guests were present, in
cluding Mrs. Harold Brown, who
was welcomed as a new mem
ber. The next meeting will be held
September 12 at the home of
Mrs. Clarence Davies at 7:30
p.m. A potluck dinner will .be
served, and Mrs. John Crosskell
will be co-hostess.

From Lexington
Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Briggs and
daughters, Betty and Ellen, of
Lexington, N.C., are in Medford
to visit Mrs. Briggs' mother,
Mrs. C. Q. D'Albini, 308 North
Ivy street.
En route west the visitgrs
toured the Grand Canyon and
saw Disneyland in California. In
Danville, Calif., they were
guests of Mrs. Briggs' brother-in-law
and sister, Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Mondot. They will leave
the first of the week for the re
turn trip home, leaving here by
way of Crater lake and includ
ing Yellowstone National park
on the trip home.
