The President especially likes
comfortable shoes. He frequently
wore a pair of buckskin mocca

The white leather, crepe-soled

The Byers Peak ranch of Ak

the President's 7-year-old grand

Then there's a girl named Mu
riel who acted in school plays in
New Jersey. Now Muriel is Te
resa Wright who has won an
academy award and been nomi
nated for three others.
Don't forget Van Johnson, who
existed on one hot dog a day
back in New York, waiting for a
chance as a chorus boy and the
break that brought him here.
Life is beginning today for
some person who never dared
think good fortune and his
heart's desire could really hap
pen to him. The password is "tal
ent." You don't have to possess
important connections; your fa
ther doesn't have to know the
head of the studio. You can suc
ceed under your own power.
Never Graduated
No one ever gave me anything,
even an education. I never grad
uated from any school, even
grade school. That didn't hold
me back. This background was
the greatest thing that ever hap
pened to me because it made
me realize I must never stop
learning, and I never have.
I was born with a wooden
spoon in my mouth, and it was a
better break than being born
with a gold one. Kids who have
it easy don't have the same incen

something to offer.
I used to sell newspapers in
San Francisco. In the mornings
I sold them in front of the St.

theater trade in front of the Al
cazar. . After the premiere of "Quo

in San Francisco, I walked six
blocks to the Alcazar Theater.
You see, I directed "Quo Vadis."

Rhythm' Determines
Growth of Seedlings
Berkeley, Calif. (U.R) A
California forester has discovered
that evergreen seedlings have
an internal "rhythm" which de
termines whether they will pro
duce the strong roots needed for
transplanting to Christmas tree
forests.
The forester, Edward C. Stone
has been trying to find an an
swer to the 50 per cent loss of
seedlings which occurs when
they are transplanted.
The high rate of loss has
proved the principal obstacle to
Californias Christmas tree in
dustry and has been holding
back re-development of the
state's forests and private timber
growths.
By experiment with seedlings
in the University of California's
greenhouse, Stone hopes to es
tablish the natural growth cycle
that best fits a seedling for sur
vival in California, thus raising
the survival rate to 85 or 90
per cent.
