Seal Hurler Blows Stack;
Portland Tips Stars 2-0
By PETER HAYES
United Press Sports Writer
The San Francisco Seals gained
a split in a Pacific Coast League
doubleheader with Seattle last
night despite a near case of apo
plexy by their pitcher, Don
Fracchia.
San Francisco blew a 4-0 lead
in the opener and ex-Seal Leo
Righetti applied the coup de
grace with a sacrifice fly that
drove in the tie-breaking run in
the seventh and final inning for
a 5-4 victory.
But in the second game start
ing pitcher Fracchia had a 3-1
lead going into the top of the
ninth and was determined not to
lose it.
With one out, Harvey Zernia
hit one to the infield and Frac
chia raced over to cover first.
He fell down as he made the
play and when Umpire Cece
Carlucci ruled Zernia safe, Frac
chia blew his stack.
Virtually Paralyzed
Leaping to his feet and waving
his fist, he took one step toward
the ump and collapsed. He lay
virtually paralyzed and had to
be packed off the field on a
stretcher. The club trainer re
ported however, that the young
righthander had suffered only a
severe case of stomach cramps.
Bill Bradford took over and
preserved the 3-2 win for Frac-
cia, although permitting a pair
of singles for one run.
The split enabled Seattle to in
crease its lead to four games
over the second place Hollywood
Stars, who lost to Portland, 2-0,
and to 5V2 games over third
place San Diego, beaten by Oak
land 5-3. Los Angeles edged Sac
ramento, 4-3.
In Hollywood, Beaver pitcher
Bob Alexander blanked the
Stars on four hits the fourth
time this season he has van
quished Hollywood.
Wally Westlake paced Port
land's attack on loser Ben Wade
with three hits, including a
bases-empty homer in the sixth
inning.

Chicago Sox Regain American League
Leadership; Williams Spurs Boston
By MILTON RICHMAN
United Press Sports Writer
Torrid Ted Williams can't win
the pennant for the Red Sox all
by himself but he's sure giving
it one whale of a try and worry
ing all the other contenders half
to death in the process.
The 36-year-old Williams, who
is averaging almost a run batted
in per game since coming out of
"retirement" in late May, put on
one of his patented performances
Tuesday night in leading the Red
Sox to an 8-3 victory over the
Indians and to within 3V2 games
of the American league lead.
Williams drove in four runs,
making a total of 63 in 67 games,
as he boosted his batting average
to .344 with his 23rd homer and
a double. Ted's two-run homer
in the third inning was a line
drive over the right field fence
at the expense of loser Herb
Score, while he smashed his two
run double to left center field off
ace reliever Don Mossi in the
seventh.
Chiefly because of Williams'
lusty hitting, the Red Sox were
the only club in the league's
"top four" to gain ground.
Chicago Takes Over First
Even though the White Sox
actually lost a percentage point
by dividing a doubleheader with
the Orioles, they took over first
place by two percentage points
when the Yankees lost to the Ti
gers, 7-2.
The White Sox ran their win
ning streak to five straight
games with a 6-2 victory in the
opener but the Orioles ended a
four-game losing streak of their
own with a 10-3 triumph in the
nightcap. Four Baltimore errors
made it relatively easy for Vir
gil Trucks to post his 13th vie-
