Biggest Race Season

the biggest race meet in the 90
year history of the Oregon State
fair, officials said today.
The fair opens Sept. 3, a week
from next Saturday, and con
tinues through Sept. 10. Ten rac
es are scheduled daily at Lone
Oak track except Sunday. Post
time will be 1:15 p.m.
More than 350 thoroughbreds
have been entered for the eight
running races which are carded

Total purses for the meet will
exceed $30,000, and a special
event is on the program for
every day.
Featured on the opening Sat
urday Sept. 3, will be the Inaug
ural handicap for three-year-olds
and up. The 6Vi furlong
race carries an $800 purse. Mon
day's big feature will be the
Labor Day handicap, for $1,000
in prizes.
The Speed handicap will be
the main event Tuesday. The
five-furlong race has a $700
purse. The Governor's handicap
rates top billing Wednesday. It
is a 1 l-5th mile race for an
$800 purse.
Other Races Carded
The McFadden Memorial will
top Thursday's card, with a purse
of $700. Friday's special will
be the Os West Primer', a five
furlong race with a $700 purse.
The Au Revoir handicap will
highlight the final day of rac
ing Sept. 10. The final handi
cap will be 1 l-16th mile for a
$1000 purse.
Dr. E. B. Stewart of Roseburg
is chairman of the Fair com
mission and Charles A. Evans
is Director of Racing at the state
fair. Cecil L. Edwards will be
Steward for the Oregon Racing
commission.
Jaundice Blamed
In Japanese Death
Washington (U.R) A high
Defense Department official has
disclosed that jaundice not
fallout effects killed the Jap
anese fishermen who died after
being exposed to fallout from
the big U.S. hydrogen bomb test
at Eniwetok in 1952.
Dr. Frank B. Berry, assistant
secretary of defense, said this
fact has been known for some
time.
"I haven't hestitated to men
tion it at medical meetings and
the like," he said. "The Japan
ese doctors have conceded that
this is true."
Berry said the jaundice was
induced by a bodily reaction fol
lowing a blood transfusion and
is not uncommon in America.
The fisherman was Aikichi
Kuboyama.
The fisherman's death has
been widely attributed to fall
out. The story has been the sub
ject of widespread Red propa-
