COMING OF AGE This informal portrait of Britain's
Princess Margaret with her pet dog was especially posed
in the garden of Clarence House for release on her 25th
birthday, Aug. 21. It was made by famed court photog
rapher Cecil Beaton. In royal circles, a princess "comes of
age" when she is 25. Margaret's coming age also takes on
import because of the fact that, at 25, she is free to marry
without the Queen's consent providing she gives Parliament
a year's notice and no objection is raised in Parliament.

Newspapers Speculate About
Princess Margaret, Captain
London (U.R) The news
papers of Italy and France joined
those of Britain today in specu
lating that Princess Margaret's
25th birthday Sunday will con
clude the "love story of a cen
tury." The name of Group Capt. Pet
er Townsend appeared in every
dispatch and one . British paper
said he would remain in England
when he returns next month on a
scheduled visit.
The paper, the Labor Party's
Daily Herald, observed that Cap
tain Townsend would spend Sun
day at the races in Belgium
where the RAF war hero is air
attache.
"He has made no plans to re
turn to Belgium," the Daily Her
ald said, "despite the fact that his
tour of duty at the Brussels em
bassy has been extended to the
end of the year."
Officials in London would not
comment on this report. Captain
Townsend got the rest of the
week off from his Brussels
chores Wednesday and was re
ported staying with friends in
the country.
On , Saturday, Captain Town
send, an enthusiastic horseman,
will take part in a gentlemen's
race at the Belgian port of Os
tend and then remain to watch
the races at the same course on
Sunday. He returns to England
Sept. 4 for the Farnborough Air
Show.
- On Sunday Princess Margaret
becomes eligible to marry with
out the formal consent of her
sister, Queen Elizabeth II, who
could never give her consent for
Margaret to marry a man who
has been divorced.
In the land of Romeo and Ju
liet, the Italian press was faith
fully counting the days up to the
birthday.
"In four days Margaret has
the right to marry Captain
Townsend," Rome's Momento
Sera said on its front page.
"Is this the conclusion of the
'love story of the century?' "
asked II Messaggerb, a conserva
tive Rome newspaper. "In a few
days Margaret could announce
her decision to marry Captain
Townsend."
Margaret's dilemma also
aroused sympathetic comments
in France where the mass cir
culation weekly Paris magazine
Jours de France said the biggest
gift she will receive "is the
right to decide her own fate."
Use scouring pads of fine steel
wool to remove scuff marks from
white wall tires.
London (U.R) Group Capt.
Peter Townsend and the British
royal family were reported today
to be burning up the telephone
wires between Brussels and Bal
moral Castle in Scotland.
Captain Townsend is in Brus
sels currently on leave from his
position there as British air at
tache. Princess Margaret is at
Balmoral for her 25th birthday
celebration Sunday when she be
comes free to marry without the
consent of her sister, the Queen.
London's tabloid Daily Sketch,
in a dispatch from Brussels, said
"crucial messages have passed
during the last 48 hours between
41-year-old Group Captain Peter
Townsend and the royal family.
The messages have been concern
ed with the decision Princess
Marget is expected to make
shortly about her marriage to
him."
British newspapers were work
ing themselves into an uproar of
"will she, won't she" announce
her engagement to Captain
Townsend.
Five of London's nine national
morning dailies already have
speculated on what the princess
will do, all of them said whatever
she does it will concern Captain
Townsend.
The most uninhibited was the
tabloid Daily Mirror which de
manded in huge front page type:
"Come On Margaret! Please
Make Up Your Mind!"
The Sketch, in reporting the
telephone conversations, said
Captain Townsend drove Thurs
day to the office of British Am
bassador Sir Charles Warner
after receiving a telephone-call
and applied for local leave."
"He has started to make ar
rangements to leave Brussels,
perhaps permanently."
London's Daily Herald gave
the same report Thursday, but
the British Air Ministry said "As
far as we know he will go back
to his normal duties after a meet
ing of air attaches in London on
September 12."
There was general agreement
that Captain Townsend would
not attend the Princess's birthday
party Sunday at Balmoral but
will go to the races at Ostend,
Belgium, instead.
Here's a soda for the small
fry. Mix one cup of orange juice
(fresh, canned or frozen) with
two scoops of vanilla ice cream.
Have all ingredients very cold.
Beat with a rotary beater or give
it a whirl in your blender. Makes
a delicious, healthful drink.
