Two Bathrooms in Every Home Becoming
Standard for Middle Class Americans
Chicago (U.R) Two bath
rooms in every home is becom
ing the standard for middle class
America, a study shows.
The survey was made by Com
mercial Discount Corp., which
"havan interest in bathroom data
because it provides financing for
plumbing supply companies.
Sidney Feuchtwanger, Com'
mercial Discount president, said
the two-bathroom concept jibes
with the trend toward two cars
and two TV sets per family.
"More parents are deciding
they want a private bath," he
said.
The survey is based on re
ports from 26 plumbing equip
ment manufacturers in Massa
chusetts, New York, Maryland,
Ohio and Illinois.
Their business this year is
running about 30 per cent above
1954, when their sales totaled
$101,000,000.
Few Frills
From 1948 to 1953. Feucht
wanger said, new houses had
lew frills. Most postwar housing
went to shelter young married
couples who had to scrimp on
the non-essentials.
Houses built in those years
were smaller and far less plush
than those built in pre-World
War II years.
For example, in 1940 20 per
cent of all new houses had two
or more baths. But in 1950 only
8 oer cent had more than one

This fact, if it needs proof, can
be established from the reports
of large, speculative builders,
who comprise only 19 per cent
of the trade but who last year
put up 78 per cent of the na
tion's new homes.
Reports from these mass-volume
builders indicate that 22
per cent of the new houses go
ing up have-at least 1V& baths,
and 12 per cent have two baths.
The trend goes hand-in-hand
with the rising ' popularity of
the split-level house, which pro
vides more floor space without
the prerequisite of a large lot.
The average 1950 house had
about 900 square feet of floor
space, figures show. But this
year's average will run closer
to 1100 square feet.
The average house is still' a
ranch type without basement,
despite the split-level trend, but
it has three bedrooms, IVi to
two baths, a combination living
dining room and a large kitchen.
If the house is a bit above
average, it may have a den or
TV room.

The Dalles Grain
Bin Wall Collapses
The Dalles (U.R) A retain
ing wall of an open air grain
storage bin collapsed yesterday
as workmen clambered over the
pile, but no injuries were re
ported. The bin was leased by Con
tinental Grain Company from the
Port of The Dalles.
Company officials said the
open air bin had been loaded
with 275,000 bushels of grain
when the break occurred. Sound
of the collapse was heard blocks
away. Some grain spilled through
at both ends of the collapsed
wall.
Wheat stored in the 300,000
bushel bin will be removed to
nearby elevators owned by the
port until repairs can be made
to retaining walls. Only loss
caused by the mishap will be cost
of repairs and labor expended in
shuttling the grain.

named Malheur County "Grass
man of the Year" for the second

cable ship "Monarch" finished
laying a slender 1,300-mile tele
phone cable two miles under
mid-Atlantic Thursday. The cable
is the mid-Atlantic section of the
first trans-Atlantic telephone
line, expected to be ready for
its first call in late 1956.

have produced 17,000,000 re
