Coast Guard Officer's Commission Held Up For Security Reason
Washinteon (U.R) The Coast
Guard disclosed another "Landy
Case" yesterday, one in which a
commission has been withheld
from a Coast Guard officer can
didate for security reason involv
ing his mother.
. The man was identified as Ap
prentice Seaman Norton Pierre
Gaston of San Francisco, who
was graduated eighth in his class
April 1 at the Officer Candidate
School of the Coast Guard Acad
emy, New London, -Conn.
A Cost Guard official said that
"in getting his background and
security information, there has
been a delay in granting his
commission."
The Coast Guard refused to
give any details of security find
ings except that they concerned
Gaston's mother.
In a similar case, the Navy
recently denied a commission to
Eugene W. Landy, 21, honor
graduate of the U. S. Merchant
Marine Academy, on the grounds
that his mother once was a Com
munist. Senators, congressmen
and others have interceded on
Landy's behalf, and Navy Sec
retary Charles S. Thomas an
nounced Aug. 6 that he would
personally make a 'full and im
partial" investigation of ' the
Landy case.
Gaston's attorney said that
Gaston's mother, Mrs. Jean.
Grisez of San Francisco, "was
never accused of being a Com
munist" but was accused of hav
ing been a member of several or
ganizations on the attorney gen
eral's so-called subversive list.
Case Being Studied
At San Francisco, Mrs. Grisez
declined to comment on the case.
She said she would issue no
statement until she had con
ferred with her attorney.
A security screening board has
already passed on the Gaston
case and referred it to a local
security board which is now con
sidering the case here.
A review board will go over
the case when the local board
finishes, the Coast Guard said,
and the secretary of treasury and
the commandant of the Coast
Guard will review it afterward.
Gaston. 23, who graduated in
June, 1954 from the University
of California, finished eighth in
his Officer Candidate School
class.
Gaston declined to comment
on the case. He has been assigned
temporary duty with the Coast
Guard here.
Beeville, Tex. (U.R) Funeral
services were held yesterday for
Mrs. Mary Margaret Borglum,
80, author, former publisher
and widow of Gutzon Borglum,
who sculptured the Mount Rush
more Memorial in the. Black
Hills of South Dakota.
Buenos Aires Police Quell Demonstration
Buenos Aires (U.R) Police
and firemen using clubs and fire
hoses yesterday broke up a dem
onstration before a cathedral
here. Several persons were ar
rested. Police stopped all passersby
and searched them for arms and
for pamphlets. Cars also were
stopped and several occupants
were removed.
Two fire trucks, four buses
and eight patrol wagons rushed
to the area to pick up the per
sons detailed by police.
The crowd began gathering at
midday with the announced in
tention of paying homage at the
mausoleum of San Martin.
Police moved in when the
crowd started shouting "long
live liberty" and other slogans.
The political truce which fol
lowed the June 16 revolt against
the government of President
Juan D. Peron appeared over.
Reinformed troops-and artillery
units guarded the President's
residence.

Old Air Force
Documents Tossed Out
Denver (U.R) The Air
Force has cleaned out of its files
enough old documents to make
a stack three times as high as
the Empire State building.
To bring its 144,288 master
files on Air Force reservists up
to date, the records center said
yesterday, took the efforts of
1400 temporary' civil service
workers, a squad of lawyers, a
college professor, a medical in
terne and a platoon of GI col
lege students.
Col. James T. Quirk, who di
rected the "record-perfection
project" said such things as
birth certificates, marriage lic
enses and college diplomas were
mailed back to the reservists.
Copies of temporary travel or
ders and other military docu
ments cluttering up the place
were burned.
Stacked together, the discard
ed papers would have been 3458
feet high. Laid end to end, they
would have stretched 2456 miles.
