A MESSAGE FROM PARADISE
Some reader, I'm afraid, will
recall that two years ago the
conductor of this column, for all
his therapeutic nihilism, com
mitted a grevious sin: reported
what the poor galoot thought
was almost miraculous cure of
joint disability of long standing
by a few doses (tablets) of a new
"wonder drug" instead of wait
ing until the immediate anel
gesic effect of the drug wore off.
When that effect had worn off,
some days following publication
of the report, th epatient, the
poor galoot (Brady by name) and
everybody present realized the
painful truth that the new nos
trum was just another analgesic
(pain killer) with no more actual
remedial value than older anal
gesics such as acetanilid (phenyl
acetamide), phenacetin (aceto
phenetidin), aminopyrin, antipy
rin, aspirin, but far more dan
geroups than any of these fa
miliar pain-killers.
Today I received a message
from paradise, a fool's paradise.
I know because I was there when
I rushed into print with the re
port of the near-miracle. The
message came on a postal card
and reads:
Re your column on "rheuma
tiz." Food is basic, I agree
but after three years of "rheuma
toid arthritis" let me say the
hormones are not to be -sneezed
at.
My history:' 18 months on cor
tizone good effects able
to work. Then 18 months aspirin
only remission the first 12
months then increasing pain
and weakness NOW two weeks
on metacortin two daily magi
cal effect feeling OK strong
and well! Perhaps wrong diet af
fects pituitary and adrenals?
(No signature)
In the first place, in my opin
ion this message is a fabrication.
In the next place, if I'm wrong
in the first place, I'll pay $100
to the writer of the message for
substantiation of his or her state
ment by the testimony of a repu
table physician, provided the
writer still feels "O K strong
and well!"
Please tell me, if you can, why
any one with a heart or a soul
would resort to anonymity in the
circumstances this message de
scribes? I'll keep the postal card until
it becomes evident that it was
just another manifestation of in
human nature.
Again I urge readers with
joint disability of more than a
year's standing, no matter what
fancy name it may have, to send
me a stamped, self-addressed en
velope and ask in writing, sign
ed if you expect an answer, for
the pamphlet Calcium and Rheu
matiz. If you change the title there
will be no answer.

Texas Calendar To Be
Turned Back to 1916
Brownsville, Tex. (U.R)
The Brownsville Chamber of
Commerce is making plans to
turn the calendar back to 1916
next year.
The occasion will be the 40th
anniversary of the encampment
of a 100,000-man army of reg
ular troops and National Guards.
They were sent to subdue Pancho
Villa and other border bandits
who were terrorizing the area.
Manager Oscar Longnecker
said the Chamber of Commerce
is trying to get as many as pos
sible of the old soldiers back to
visit the sites of the border
camps they occupied 40 years
ago.

Hollywood (U.R) Of all the

during the last 20 years as a

many problems as "Helen of

on the Warner Bros. lot.
It was like trying to direct

done. I was the man responsible
for the long-range supervision of
makeup on both pictures.

"Land of The Pharaohs" were
given an extra smear with the
pancake, or a bit more eye shad
ow, I guess I was the culprit re
sponsible. It was probably the most dif
ficult makeup assignment I had
ever been given. I couldn't be
with the companies since I had
to supervise pictures shooting on
the home lot.
But I would look at each day's
rushes. I would have the pro
jectionist cut off the sound so I
could concentrate on the makeup
alone.
For instance, with "Helen of
Troy," I noticed that Rossana Po
desta's blonde' hair was photo
graphing slightly orange in the
bright Italian sun.
A quick call to Rome and the
next day's rushes showed her
hair in true color and perspec
tive. Joan Collins, British - born
actress who stars in "Land of
The Pharoahs," has naturally
fair complexion. In the picture,
however, I had to darken her
skin. When I saw her first day's
work, I noticed her skinhad a
Miami Beach look. I wanted a
California look since the sun
shine in Egypt has the same den
sity and degree of concentration
as in California. I had the'make
up crew in Cairo add a bit of
white chalk to the applicant and
it worked out just fine.
