Syngman Rhee Apparently Will Win Fight To Get Truce Team Out of Korea
Dulles' Statement
Shows Armistice
flay Be Defied
By UNITED PRESS
Syngman Rhee apparently Is
flying to win his fight to get the
tJnited) Nations truce teams out
South Korea.
But it will take a little time,
(Slid it may be Rhee's last polit
ltfal victory.
Secretary of State Dulles
tinted that the United States will
the Communists and the
terms of the Geneva Armistice
and side with Rhee when he
said the truce teams may be
rving an evil purpose in South
Korea.
Dulles hinted that the United
Spates would agree to moves to
nXirbO the teams' activities at
once. That would bottle up the
Polish and Czechoslovak mem
bers of the teams, whom the
Iiuq Koreans call Red spies.
r Miahl Renew Prooosal
Then a little later, the Swiss
and Swedish members might re
rew their proposal of last March
Uthat the truce teams be dis
banded. The Swiss and Swedes
Qiight singly decide tocgo home.
That would leave the Czechoslo
vaks and Poles alone in South
Korea and would give the United
States solid grounds for allow
ing Rhee to expel them.
.r-Jlhee has been so insistent on
petting the truce teams out of
South Korea that he has stirred
ij a hornet's nest with the dem
onstrations against American
military bases where the teams
are quartered.
Rhee has used the truce team
i.isue to dramatize his demand
that the United States back him
in renewing the war in an at
tempt to unify Korea by force.
Perhaps, the elderly president
Mally believes in the possibility
of such a war that once in it,
the United States would have
w go all the way 'to the Yalu
river this time, even if it meant
a big air-sea war with Red
China.
May Reflect Fruitration
But soberer heads say Rhee's
fljijry attitude may reflect only
his frustration both over his in
ability to unite Korea by force
arid over the economic difficul
ties which beset his government
ahome. - -
For in spite of $1,000,000,000
dearth of American help since
Kgte Korean war, South Korea
still is in serious economic trou
bles. The inflation is getting
i5rse. A new official rate for
jOK currency has just been set
l 500 hwan to the dollar against
ie old rate of 180.
TheOcauses of South Korea's
Konomic troubles are varied and
fjre the subject of bitter disputes
fctweei Rhee and , the United
Slates.
For one thing, there is a con
troversy over foreign trade and
EidUstrialization. Korea's econ
gW used to depend largely on
porting rice and Japan was
vie best customer for the rice,
tft S. Doesn't Need Rice
But Rhee's government hates
W do business with the Japanese.
Instead it wants to buy heavy
machinery from the United
S&ites and industrialize rapidly.
ut the United States has no
need for Korean rice. So South
K rare a is said to have on hand a
three year's surplus of rice which
she reftises to sell to Japan for
consumer goods.
CJhe Reds are using the truce
team row as an excuse to needle
e&iee and Washington with re
newed proposals for an interna
tional conference to United Ko
rea. In fact, President Kim II
Swjsg of North Korea proposed
direct talks with Rhee.
These Red proposals look like
window-dressing to most of the
world. They haven't a chance of
ng accepted.
But they are daggers thrust at
R!ee. They remind him sharply
that one result of the recent sum
mit conference at Geneva is that
all plans for settling Asiatic
problems by force are out.

Chick Hatchings
Behind '54 Level
Washington (U.R) In Janu
ary, chick hatchings were 21 per
cent behind the 1954 level. But
for the January through July
period, the gap is only nine per
cent, according to the Depart
ment of Agriculture.
Production of turkey poults is
running behind the 1954 level
for the first seven months of the
year, down about two per cent
for heavy breeds.
It would have been down more
except for extremely large July
production. The number of heavy
breed turkey poults hatched last
month jumped to more than
1,900,000 ... up more than one
third from the same month a
year ago.
Production of light breed
poults fell to a total of 2,200,000
. . . down 10 per cent from July,
1954. And for the first seven
months of the year, 1955 output
of light breed poults is down 25
per cent.
With supplies down, turkey
growers can expect better prices
this year. But chicken producers
have been warned often during
the last few months that heavy
stocks may push their prices
down. .
The agriculture department's
report on cold storage stocks in
dicates supplies are backing up
in warehouses.
Gallagher Case May Be
Ready for Court Verdict
New York (U.R) The case of
Sgt. James Gallagher, Brooklyn,
New York, may go to an eight
man court late today for a ver
dict. Gallagher is charged with the
murder of three fellow prisoners
and aiding the enemy while a
prisoner of war in Korea.
So far, the 23-year-old soldier
as denied all accusations. He has
only admitted that he was con
sidered, as he put it, the "worst
guy" is the prison camp.
Fiber Board May 4
Be Atomic Defense
Madison, Wis. (U.R) USDAs
Forest Products laboratory has
developed a new board product
for atomic defense.
It's a cheap wood fiber buil
ding board which looks just like
ordinary fiber board. But chem
icals added to the fiber will filt
er out poisonous gas and the ra
dioactive fall-out from an atomic
or hydrogen blast.
The new product is called "dif
fusion board." USDA spokesmen
said it will put atomic protec
tion within everybody's reach
when it becomes available in
large volume.
Only small amounts of the
new board are being made now,
and the supply is going to mili
tary authorities for testing.
Competition Stiff
For Cotton Growers
Washington (U.R) American
cotton pickers face stiffer com
petition on the world market
during the coming year.
That forecast came from the
international cotton advisory
committee, reporting that pro
duction in other cotton exporting
countries is up again this year.
The committee said export
prospects should be good with
mill demand in most countries
expected to remain at a high
level. Stocks in the importing
countries are at the lowest levels
since these nations recovered
from the effects of World War II.
American production will be
down from last year's level, al
though total cotton stocks in this
country are high. And the inter
national cotton committee be
lieves there'll be another new
record set in other cotton grow
ing countries.
The new Mexican crop is esti
mated at 2.200,000 bales . .. up
400,000 bales. While American
growers have been cutting their
cotton acreage back, plantings
are up this season in Egypt, Tur
key. Syria, Pakistan and Greece.
The cotton committee said the
outlook for cotton consumption
around the free world is good.
And the group believes produc
tion will be closer to consump
tion than it's been in the last
few years.
