0 Grants Pass
SOL Protest
o Not Allowed
A Grants Pass protest has been
jj denied and the July 23 Southern
Oregon Baseball league be
tween the Medf ord Cheney Studs
and the Elks will not be replayed
League President Donald E. Fa
&r has reported.
O The Medford victory by 8 to
7, in 10 innings thereby will
stand:
Grants Pass played the game
V?der protest afte'r Medford bat
ter Derald Wooton was allow
ed to go to first base and re
main after a fourth pitched ball
Which was also ruled a balk. The
incident occurred in the fifth
inning. Manager Mel Ingram of
Crants Pass contended that
Wooton was not entitled to re
gain at first.
Faber disallowed the protest
fDn both a ruling and on techni
calities. He said that, according
to the book, a man is allowed
'to go to first on a fourth pitched
Ifcall, even though it is a balk.
CThe president said too that the
Elks did not follow loop regula
tions in filing the beef and that
the protest was announced after
one pitch had been made to the
next batter.
No Title Bearing
The game in question has no
bearing on the league champion-
'ship, Faber went on to point out.
Drain has clinched the champ
ionship for the second successive
year of the circuit. Faber -indicated,
that no play-off among top
teams is planned although an ex
tra session was discussed before
the start of the campaign.
Medford will close out its reg
ular league play next Saturday
and Sunday against . Coquille
here. Bend will play at Drain and
Bandon at Roseburg in other
games during, the coming week
end.
The Studs end the year on
Aug. 27 and 28 with non-loop
tussles against the Lumberjacks
at North Bend. League scuffles
that week end will be Grants
Pass at Coquille, Drain at Ban
don and Roseburg at Bend.
In the Medford game which
GP protested there was a run
home and two men on base when
Wooton came to bat. Bob Reid
threw wide pitches to intention
ally walks the Studs' player. On
the fourth toss Umpire Virgil
Swanson ruled that Catcher Bob
Smith stepped out of his box be
fore Reid released the ball. That
meant a balk charged to Reid
although Smith was at fault. The
infraction allowed one Medford
runner to score end the other
to go to third base. And Wooton
went to first at well.

Sluggers Move Yankees Into
AL Lead; Red Sox Win, 8-4
By FRED DOWN
United Press Sports Writer
The sluggers have stolen the
spotlight in the tense American
League battle and knocked the
old axiom that pitching pays off
in a tight pennant race into a
cocked hat.
It used to be that the experts
singled out the contender with
the strongest pitching staff and
confidently predicted it would
win out. And, more often than
not, they proved correct.
But it's the boys "with the
big bang" who are turning out
to be the key men in the cur
rent four-team struggle.
The New York Yankees recap
tured first place by half a game
for the first time since July 27
Monday when they downed the
last-place Baltimore Orioles, 5-4
and 12-6. A ninth-inning home
run by Hank Bauer gave them
the winning margin in the open
er while Mickey Mantle's 28th
and 29th round-trippers of the
season carried them to victory
in the nightcap.

Yakima Wins
3-2 In 10th
By UNITED PRESS
Milt Martin of Tri-City knows
today just why baseball mana
gers grow old before their time.
Martin was acting manager of
the Braves last night as Yakima
edged Tri-City 3-2 in 10 innings
on a manager's nightmare a
base on balls.
Joe Orrell and Sam Mitchell
singled and Art, Maye walked to
load the bases in the Yakima
tenth. Dick Green then failed to
find the plate and walked Dave
Hammermeister to force in the
winning run.
Yakima got two runs in the
fourth on Maye's two-run homer
but Tri-City tied it in the sixth
on Rick Herrera's double, a run-
scoring infield error and a one-
run single by Martin.
Martin's hitting didn't suffer
as he had two singles and a dou
ble and Green bettered that with
two singles and a triple. : "
In the only other Northwest
League game played last night,
Spokane defeated Salem 4-2
with a two-run outburst in the
eighth on consecutive singles by
Joe Porter, Dick Hogan and Bill
Sheets. That gave Spokane a 4-0
lead which Salem cut to 4-2 in
the ninth on Ron King's two-run
homer.
Pat Trierweiler went all the
way for the Indians to chalk up
his tenth victory of the year.
