n The Florentines taught the
"French how to cook. They also
(Instructed them in the use of
the knife and fork.. That was
in the middle ages. Now the
French are the greatest cooks
(in the world. Or, so they 'say in
(faris. However, some experts
consider the Italians the best
cooks. Others say the Chinese
are tops. Anyway, how about
the American cooks? The cooks
of this country have never been
given much credit for culinary
skill. That was why the Eu
ropean chefs were surprised
wheri the American team com
peting at the 1954 International
Culinary Exhibition at Berne,
Switzerland, won 11 gold medals
for their,, skill in cookery. Six
teen nations competing in this
event. Austria and Germany
were tied for first place, the
American team finished second.
Passing By
"Big Ed" Walsh. Great major
league twirler of the yesteryear.
In one season (1908) Walsh
pitched 66 games for the Chi
cago White Sox and won 40 of
them! Yes, sir, that's what I
said, in one season. "Big Ed"
was really an "iron man."
Babies
Were you born in a hospital
or at home? Experts on the sub
ject seem to agree that babies
who grow up to be the health
iest and most successful adults
are born at home. I'm not going
t argue that point. I was born
at home. Another thing, when

Asking
Queries from clients. Q. Did
four or five Marx Brothers ap
pear in the film titled "Duck
Soup"? A. Four. They were
Groucho, Harpo, Zeppo and
Chico. Gummo was the business
manager of the picture . . . Q.
What New York restaurant
serves the best apple strudel? A.
Luchow's . . . Q. What is the
inscription on the tombstone of
Will Rogers? I say it includes
Will's saying: "I never met a
man I didn't like." A. You are
mistaken. All that is engraved
on the great humorist's tomb
stone is Claremore, Okla., is the
following: "Will Rogers. Born:
Oologah, Okla.. Nov. 4. 1879.
Died: Point Barrow, Alaska, Aug.
15, 1935."
Vegetarian
The name of George Bernard
Shaw is invariably included In
lists of celebrated vegetarians.
Shaw was not a 100 per cent
vegetarian. He freauentlv con
sumed fish. However, the great
wit and playwright was a great
booster for the vegetarian diet
and found it embarrassing when
sunering from pernicious anemia
to be told the only way he could
be cured was by injections of
liver.
Used Cars
What's the lowest Drice vou
ever heard of being paid for a
used car that was in good enough
running order to drive awav
after the purchase. I just heard
of a fellow who bought a 1936
model used car for $13. Not only
did he drive it off the lot when
he bought it but he is using it
daily to drive to work.
