Sunburned English Bicyclist Stops in Medford on 7,600-Mile Trip Across US

port facilities was assured yes
terday by a Civil Aeronautics
administration allocation of
$520,300 in federal matching
funds to three Oregon cities.
The CAA allocated $185,800
to Eugene, $34,500 to Medford
and $300,000 to Portland, accord
ing to word received by Oregon
Sens. Richard Neuberger and
Wayne Morse and Rep. Edith
Green.
The funds will provide run
way extension and reconstruc
tion for Mahlon Sweet airport
at Eugene, Medford Municipal
and Portland International air
ports. The program would benefit all
phases of aviation and create em
ployment in building, supply and
construction industries, accord
ing to the three Oregonians.
They said the allocations for
fiscal 1956 were in addition to
funds which will be allocated
within the next 90 days for other
airport projects to receive aid
under appropriations approved
by the 84th Congress.
Johnny Hathaway, a sun
burned Coventry. England, bi
cyclist, stopped in Medford yes
terday on a trip that will take
him some 7,600 miles across the
United States.
Hathaway has already cov
ered 841 miles since starting out
a week ago from Vancouver, B.
C But it wasn t until he ar
rived in downtown Medford that
he had his first accident.
However, it was only minor.
A spoke was broken. This was
expected to be fixed in short
order, and Hathaway planned to
be on his way again, as sche
uled, this morning.
The small, stocky Englishman
made what probably will be the
longest one-day trip of the entire
jaunt on Monday, when he
cycled from Madras to Crater
lake, a distance of about 150
miles.
He originally was scheduled
to stop at Chemult for the night,
but decided to go on to the lake.
Speaking with a decided British
accent, Hathaway declared the
Monday journey was a tough
one.
The heat was much greater
than he expected, there was little
or no shade, and a good share of
the route was up hill. In fact,
Hathaway was still feeling the
effects of the long trip when he
started out yesterday from
Crater lake. "I didn't have any
push left in my legs," he said
with a grin.
So far, Hathaway has been
particularly impressed with Mt
Rainier and Crater lake, which
he compared with Lake Louise,
in Canada. Mt. Hood, lacking in
snow at this time of year, was
something of a disappointment.
A mechanical draftsman at
home in Coventry, Hathaway
started his bike riding career in
England as a racer.
His first cross country trip
was in 1953, when he went from
Montreal, Canada, to Vancouver,
B. C, a distance of 5,300 miles.
Recalling that trip, he said the
weather was hotter Monday
than it was at any time whi
crissing Canada, with the excep
tion of one day.
Since arriving in British
Columbia. Hathaway has worked
as a mechanical draftsman for
Crown Zellerbach paper com
pany, in an area without any
roads worthy of the name.
This bothered him, because he
lad no choice to get into con
iition for his tour of the United
States. However, he said yester
day, that it hadn't been as tough
as he expected.
The trip to the United States
was prompted by a desire to see
the Grand Canyon. However,
on thinking it over, Hathaway
decided he'd hate to go home
and tell people he had a chance
to see the rest of the United
States and then failed to take it.
So he mapped out the 7,000 mile
trip.
The entire trip, Hathaway fer
vently hopes, will cost
about $400. He plans to camp
out as much as possible, and is
eating only two large meals a
day, at morning and night,
"with maybe a snack in be
tween." Traffic "hasn't been bad, so
far," Hathaway says, and he
doesn't expect it to be a prob
lem, even in the more heavily
populated areas. He noted that
he has received some offers of
rides, but he's turned them
down because he's afraid he
would miss some good chances
to take colored pictures.
Hathaway is mailing the film
to the east, where he will pick
it up before catching a ship for
England, from Montreal, in
November.

Girls Spend Night
Under Family Hedge
Portland (U.R) Two cold
and sleepy little girls, object of
a widespread search since late
yesterday, walked into their
home about 3 a.m. today.
The girls, Karen Officer, 7,
and Sharon Officer, 4, told po
lice and their mother they had
slept beneath a laurel hedge in
their own yard while the search
was going on. Mrs. Jayne Offi
cer said she had seen them sev
eral blocks from home yesterday
afternoon while on her way to
a store and had told them to go
home, threatening them with a
spanking.
