EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE
Monday, August 8, 1955
On The Side by e. v. Durimg
(Diitributed by King Fiaturam Syndicate. Inc.)
The liveliest town in Texas
is now Galveston. There is a
campaign on there to increase
the popularity of the city as a
pleasure resort. Gaiety, gambling
and gals are featured. Crooked
gambling is not tolerated. The
visitors must be given a fair
deal. It is interesting to note
that the gambling machine
known as the "one-man bandit"
is barred. This, according to
those dominating the Galveston
gay life situation, does not give
the player a fair break.
Something New
A method making it possible
to mature whisky in eight and
one-half hours. That's what a
Scotsman named Tom Suther
land has originated. By Suth
erland's method, whisky, in the
brief period aforementioned,
can be made as mature as three
year old whisky is at present.
Experts have been unable to dis
tinguish between the 8V4 hour
old whisky and the three year
old whisky. However, the law
in Scotland says all whisky must
be matured in a cask for at least
three years before it is sold at
retail.
Asides
It is still my opinion that
organ music gives a restaurant
the atmosphere of a funeral par
lor. The ideal dinner music is
that furnished by a string quar
tet. . . . The first automobile in
which I rode at the rate of over
60 miles an hour was a Stutz
Bearcat.
In-Laws
If a girl's father is henpecked,
her future husband will proba
bly suffer the same sad fate. So
claim some experts on the sub
ject of life among the married.
Keep it in mind, young fellow.
Before you definitely accept a
girl's proposal of marriage,
check on how her mother han
dles her father. Also keep in
mind that a woman who domi
nates her husband too much is
likely to make a difficult mother-in-law.
Knitting ,
Does your wife do any kit
ting? How speedy is she? How
many rows and how many
stitches can she do in a minute?
Howi long does it take her to
knit a pair of socks? There has
been originated a home auto
matic knitting machine that will
knit 30 rows and 5,000 stitches
a minute. With this remarka
ble gadget a pair of socks can
be knitted in 35 minutes.
Mayflower
I met a woman who proudly
and repeatedly said her ances
tors came to this country with
the Pilgrim Fathers on the good
ship Mayflower. I asked her
how many passengers were on
the Mayflower. The query baf
fled her. So I told her the
answer was 102. I wonder how
many people in the United
States can now truly say their
ancestors came over here in the
Mayflower. There must be thou
sands of them. Consider the
fact that Mr. and Mrs. John
Alden (Priscilla Mullen), who
came over in the Mayflower,
alone had 11 children.
Please Note
Millionaire actor Humphrey
Bogart and his wife, Lauren,
have celebrated their tenth wed
ding anniversary. They ex
pressed their belief that their
adherence to the old fashioned
idea of a double bed has been a
major factor in the success of
their marriage. That could be.
On the other hand Katherine
Cornell and Guthrie McClinic
have separate beds on different
floors in the same house that
is, each has a private apartment.
Yet Katherine and Guthrie have
been happily married for over
33 years.
Literary Note
Marlene Dietrich is writing a
book on the subject of the pres
ervation of beauty. That could
be good. Marlene, now 50, ap
pears to be about 35. She has
never had a face lifting opera
tion. So she doesn't have to
wear her hair long to conceal
the operation scars near the
ears as some women do. I be
lieve part of the secret of Diet
rich's eternal youth is that she
has a very active mind and has
always been interested in the
problems of other people.
Happy Husbands
Have you a bachelorette in
your family? Has she studied
how to make a husband happy?
In some recent research involv
ing thousands of single young
women it was found 71 per cent
had studied how to make a hus
band happy. However, their
enthusiasm as to learning how
to cook was not so marked. Only
50 per cent had studied cooking.
Also less than 50 per cent had
studied infant care. By the way,
perhaps you have a bachelor
son. Has he done any studying
on how to make a wife happy?
Neckties
Monsieur De Givenchy has
said, "The signature for a man's
clothing should be his tie."
Quite so. I have noticed that
women comment more on a
man's tie than any other article
of his apparel. By showing un
usual taste in neckwear, a young
fellow can often get off to a good
start in an effort to win the af
fectionate regard of a beautiul
female. It is not a bad idea
for a man to ask a woman to
select his ties.
Plane Hits Tree
Killing SF Pilot
Stateline, Nev. U.R) A San
Francisco man was killed and his
companion was seriously injured
yesterday when their plane
crashed into a tree in the High
Sierra just above Lake Tahoe.
Kilfed in the accident was
Willard E. Holt, 22, a Pan Amer
ican World Airways employee.
His 19-year-old wife is expect
ing their first baby in a few
weeks.
Seriously injured was James
C. Headrick, 26, an employee of
the Nystrom Aviation company
of Palo Alto. He came here three
weeks ago from Chattanooga,
Tenn. He was rushed to Carson
City hospital for surgery.
Witnesses said their Piper
Tri-Pacer touched down on the
abandoned Tahoe Village air
strip, then climbed back into the
air.
Constable William Stam
baugh of Tahoe Village said the
engine "appeared to be turning
over smoothly but it seemed to
lack enough power to clear the
mountains on the east side of
Tahoe.
The plane smashed into the
base of a tree near the Kings
bury Grade, only three feet
away from a tent occupied by
Tom Baleria of Babbit, Nev. Ba
leria was unhurt.
The plane had taken off from
Reno yesterday morning.

Ipoh, North Malaya (U.R)
A school principal here says girls
with permanent waves are re
luctant to participate in sports
for fear they will muss their
hair. She banned permanents for
this reason.
Kern County Shaken
By Light Earthquakes
Bakesfield, Calif. (U.R) Two
light earthquakes jolted many
Kern county residents last night
but authorities said no damage
or injuries had been reported.
Police spokesmen said they be
lieved the tremblors were after
shocks of a major quake that
crumbled the Bakersfield busi
ness district and killed two per
sons three years ago.
The shocks were felt shortly
after 7:10 p.m. (PST).
Nude British Dancer
Told To Remove Shoes
London (U.R) British censors,
who allow models to appear on
the" stage in the nude if they
doti't move, apparently don't go
for halfway measures as far as
unclad girls are concerned.
Dancer Denise Vane said she
sent the Lord Chamberlain's of
fice pictures of her poses and
was told they would be just fine
if she removed her shoes.
The shoes were all she was
wearing.

Around
Hollywood
By ALINE MOSBY
United Press Correspondent
Editor's note: Aline Mosby Is on
vacation. Today's guest columnist is
Jim Henaghan, a magazine writer and
Hollywood columnist. Recently Jim
startled Hollywood by turning up as
the producer of a $7,500,000 movie,
"Gettysburg," starring John Wayne.
How did ne do it:
By JIM HENAGHAN
Written for Ihe United Prest
Hollywood (U.R) The other
day there was a big story in the
paper that I was giving up the
profession of newspapering to
become a producer.
Ever since then most of my
friends, as well as a lot of peo
pie who hate me, have asked
questions about how a fellow
goes about this sort of thing.
Like Josephine, the girl down
at the drugstore where I get my
breakfast every morning.
"What's all this baloney," she
said, "that I heard about you
becoming a producer?
Beverly Hills Mansion
I wasn't sore at Jo, but felt it
was time she realized my social
position had changed. It all has
to do with a state of mind.
mean, a guy can hang around
Hollywood for years, like I did,
carrying his own shirts to the
laundromat, and suddenly he
looks at a palatial estate in Bev
erly Hills and says, "Why don't
I live there?"
And so you decide to be a pre
ducer.
You go to lunch at Romanoff's,
and when the waiter brings the
bill you don't even change color;
you just write something on it
and walk out like you had a
charge account, and on the way
out you clap Mike Romanoff on
the back good, so his monocle
falls out. That way he thinks he
knows you.
Then you go to previews, and
stand out in front smoking a
cigar. When the crowd comes
out, the pale ones will be the
producer and his help, so you
amble over and shake your head
and go "Tch, tch, tch." Or pos
sibly, "Whew."
You walk around all day with
Variety and the Hollywood R.&
porter in your pocket. You're
seen walking out of big office
buildings in a hurry. You send
lots of telegrams. They can be
about anything, it doesn't mat
ter much what, to Zanuck,
Schary, Hartman and Jack
Warner.
You wear tailor-made clothes,
drive a Jaguar, and rub your
chin a great deal.
It's as simple as all that. And
there's an even simpler way
You start out as a messenger
boy. You get to work early, and
you stay late, and pretty soon
you're in the mimeograph room,
Then you get a job in the cut
ting room, and pretty soon you're
a cutter, and then a third assist
ant director, and so on. And at
the end of 20 years, you marry
the boss's daughter, and you get
to be a producer.
How did I do it? You don't
think I'm going to tell that, do
you?

Socialite's Body Found in Pasture
Kansas City, Mo. (U.R) A
grief-stricken husband said to
day he was sure that more than
one sex fiend was involved in
the murder of his young social
ite wife whose unclothed and
battered body was found Sun
day in a pasture.
Automobile dealer William R.
Allen Jr. said his pretty wife.
Wilma, "was a reserved women"
but "would put up a real fight"
against anyone trying to force
his way into her automobile. He
said he was sure it would have
taken more than one man to
subdue her.
A three-day search for the
34-year-old mother of two sons
came to an end near Stanley,
Kan., Sunday when two farmers
looking for a lost cow stumbled
on her bound body in a pasture
thicket.
The spot where the body was
found was 15 miles from her
Kansas City, Mo., home and 23
miles from where she was last
seen in a shopping district fol
lowing a beauty shop appoint
ment last Thursday. The death
spot, 100 yards off U.S. High
way 69, also was only a few
miles from where young Bobby
Greenlease was killed less than
two years ago.
First inauguration ceremony
to be broadcast was that of Cal
vin coolidge in 1924. The "na
tional" network at that time con
sisted of 24 stations.
High Tension Wire
Fatal To Three
Newark, N. J. (U.R) An ex
pectant mother, her 10-month-old
nephew, and a man who
sought to aid them were electro
cuted Sunday night by a storm
tossed high tension wire.
Police said Mrs. Fanny Reed.
35, Newark, with other members
of a swimming party, sought
shelter in a panel truck during
a storm Sunday night.
A 4,000-volt wire, snapped by
the storm, fell on the truck and
Mrs. Reed's sister, Mrs. Doris
Patterson, 32, her son William,
10, and his friend, Terry Wil
liams, 12, all of Newark jumped
panic-stricken from the truck.
When Mrs. Reed jumped out
the rear with the child in her
arms her foot struck the bumper
and ' both were electrocuted.
John Gomez, 24, a Korean war
veteran, rushed to their aid and
was killed when he touched the
bodies, police said.
