Buried Treasure
Antique Butter Dishes
Have Army of Collectors
j The sight of an old fashion
cast iron stove usually evokes
pleasant memories in me, and
in doing so it almost always
makes me think of the instru
ment as a sort of wonderful lab
oratory presided over by a
master magician.
Not so, however, in my re
cent encounter with one in min
iature and in glass at that. It
was an excellent replica, all
right. There was even a tiny
glass flatiron on the stove. But
that made it all the worse if
anything. A tragedy, in fact, and
not even an ironic one as I told
my niece Judith.
"It's a butter dish," she said,
, "and quite an unusual one. The
flatiron is the knob with which
you lift off the cover."
I asked for further details,
and she went on to say that but
, ter dishes have a small but de
voted army of collectors.
A COPPER WATCH FOB SOLD
"Can you beat it? A copper
$20 gold piece. What kind of a
; deal do you call that?"
Jim handed me a watchfob
that clinked as I took it. It con
sisted of a heavy silver chain
about lix inches long with a bar
on the end from which were
. suspended the copper coin on
one side and another copper
disk of equal size on the other.
The latter was a medallion of
rome kind bearing the insignia
of the Knights of Labor and a
labor motto.
Neither0 the coin nor the
rs medallion was pierced, each be-
ing held in place by silver bands
that rimmed the edges.
The coin, a beautiful piece,
chad on the obverse side a Lib
erty head, left, over the date
1859. It was surrounded by 13
(-itars. On the reverse was an
"eagle with wings outstretched
and a shield on his breast. Some
rather ornate"' curlicues below
and beside the shield distin
guished it from the traditional
BIDDER FOR BOOKS KNEW
O When the auctioneer came to
the books I got up to leave, but
on spotting Mr. Aratmanov I
promptly sat down again. There
were only a half dozen bundles
of books to be sold, and I thought
q I had examined them all. If
there was something that inter
Gested Mr. Aratmanov, there was
something that would interest
The fourth lot was the one
; he bid on, and he started off with
an offer of $10. They were art
books, a four-volume set of the
; Cyclopedia of Painters and
; Paintings, a copy of The Secret
; Life of Salvador Dali, and Prom
: enades Pittoresques . , . Paris
' et ses environs, by Dalbe.
Finally the lot was knocked
down to Aratmanov for $40, a
; price that seemed to me decid-
edly on the high side.
'. Curious as to why he had bid
so much, I asked him about it.
' Mr. Aratmanov was reluctant to
, talk, but when I assured him that
- I thought his bidding had been
absurd and that he had undoubt
edly made a mistake in evaluat
ing the books, he became highly
, indignant.

"All kinds of strange designs
were put out by glass makers
at the turn of the century, and
during the 20 to 30 years be
fore. One in particular I would
like to get is a helmet butter
dish."
From what she said, it must
be even more of a monstrosity
than the one she had just bought.
The cover was fashioned like a
Greek helmet of the type worn
by the old Spartans. It comes
in clear glass, or amber, or blue,
but she had seen one in green
that someone else had bought
for $25.
I asked her how much she
thought her stove butter dish
was worth.
"Fifteen dollars would be a
fair price, considering that it's
clear glass. But if it were either
blue or amber, it would certain
ly be worth $20," she said. It
wasn't bad considering she paid
$2.50 for it.
FOR TOP PRICE
design found on American coins.
About the r,im were the words
UNITED STATES OF AMER
ICA. Beneath was the denom
ination TWENTY D.
The condition of the piece
was good. There was a certain
amount of wear, of course, from
its having struck against the
medallion during the years it
had dangled from the owner's
vest, but not enough to deface
it.
Jim told me had come across
it in a pawnshop and had paid
$3 for it.
It was a pattern coin, all right,
I told him, one of many put out
in the middle of the last century
when the government was seek
ing new designs for its coins.
Unlike many others, this was de
signed by two artists, Longacre
who did the obverse and Paquet
who did the other side.
He sold the watch fob that
afternoon for $100, not a bad
price, all things considered.
THEIR VALUE
"Of course, I know that the
Dali book hasn't sold for more
than $18, but the Cyclopedia and
-the Dalbe book are definitely
worth while, as anyone should
know," he snapped.
And I left, too straight for
a look at the auction records. He
was right about the Dali book.
A translation published in New
York in 1942 had brought a top
price in recent years of $18. The
Cyclopedia, New York, 1886,
however, had brought prices to
$45, including even the editions
of 1913 and 1927. As for the
Dalbe book, Paris, 1822, that
had brought up to $60.
I didn't let the matter rest
there, however, some days later
I called at Mr. Aratmanov's store
wnere I recently found the Dalbe
book marked at $72. 1 proceeded
to enquire about a set of the
Cyclopedia.
"I am sorry, sir," said the
clerk. "It is quite difficult to get.
We just sold our last set for $60,
but if you would care to place'
an order with us, we might be
able to get another within a few
weeks."
