According to estimates of the
Collapsible Tube Manufacturers
council, about half of the billion
collapsible tmetal tubes which
will be used this year in the
United States will go for tooth
pastes. The council figures some
918.000 miles of dentifrices will
be squeezed out of these tubes.
The rest of the industry's output
will be used for a wide variety
of products ranging from adhe
sives to wood fillers.

U.S. plans to launch in 1957 will rotate at an
altitude of between 200 and 300 miles at a

Eyes Restraints
On U S Economy
Washington U.R) The Eisen
hower administration is careful
ly considering applying "precau
tionary restraints" on the na
tional economy to prevent any
possiblity of a boom and bust, it
was learned today.
Under particular scrutiny are
"credit excesses," one of Presi
dent Eisenhower's top advisers
told the United States.
"Generally speaking," he said,
"we are doing even better than
is supposed. But we want to keep
it that way."
Not Worried
This presidential adviser, who
declined use of his name, empha
sized that the administration is
not worried about any recession
or falling off of present pros
perity. But at the same -time he
said some "restraining influ
ences" may be advisable.
"We have been deliberating
strongly on these questions for a
long time," he said.
Out of these deliberations, he
said, came the decision last week
to tighten mortgage credit.
, The Federal Housing Adminis
tration and the Veterans Ad
ministration announced simul
taneously Saturday that they
were increasing down payment
requirements 2 per cent on all
houses mortgaged under gov
ernment insurance programs,
and shortening mortgage terms
from 30 years to 25.

McKay Tells Need
Of Partnership Plan
Portland iIU.R) Secretary of
Interior Douglas McKay said last
night that development of the
West is almost impossible with
out a "partnership plan" for de
veloping the area's hydroelec
tric possibilities.
McKay, who flew home to
Oregon for a "busy" vacation,
said that the federal government
alone isn't going to finance the
region's development.
McKay and his wife arrived
here about 8:30 p.m. and went on
to Salem. He said he hoped to
be able to spend a few days at
his beach home at Newkowin
before returning to Washington
August 24.
He parried questions about the
possibility of Gov. Paul Patter
son opposing Sen. Wayne Morse
in next year's election or Presi
dent Eisenhower seeking a sec
ond term.
Massachusetts, Iowa
Have Polio Outbreak
'ftew York (U.R) A wave of
new polio cases is spreading over
two states.
Authorities in Iowa report . a
very serious epidemic in the
areas around Donnellson and
West Point, la. Three polio
deaths were reported there last
month.
A new outbreak of polio also
has hit Massachusetts, bringing
the year's total number of cases
to 520 for the state. The National
Foundation for Infantile Paraly
sis said 300 cases are being
treated in Boston alone, and the
foundation has ordered all its
emergency supplies to the city.
But health officials refuse to
call the outbreak an epidemic,
even though the number of cases
in the state is nearly seven times
the figure at the same time last
year.

Offer Solutions
For Rail Disputes
Washington (U.R) Two
emergency boards yesterday
presented to. President Eisen
hower their recommendations
for settlement of railway labor
disputes.
One of the three-man boards
recommended a 40-hour week
for railroad yard service engina
workers, members of the AFL
Brotherhood of Locomotive
Firemen and Enginemen, who
had been in disagreement with
most of the major railroads.
The other board recommend
ed pay increases for certain em
ployees of the Railway Express
Agency.
On Equal Basil
It is up to all of the parties
to decide whether to accept or
reject the recommendations.
The 40-hour week recom
mendation would put the affect
ed workers on an equal basis
with non-operating workers who
already have the 40-hour week.
The board said it would cost the
railroads approximately $7,000,
000 a year.
The board also recommenHed
the union and the railroads ne
gotiate with each other on
changes in working rules de
manded by the roads, and it
recommended that the union
withdraw its demand for a high
er minimum guarantee for earn
ings in road service.

Fire Chief Rudy Kneer radioed
a police dispatcher to check the
owner of -Woo's Laundry here
and ask him to open the door.
The fireman had answered an
alarm at the laundry address,
and wanted to get in to see if the
place was okay. ' v
"Who's Laundry?" asked dis
patcher Roy King.
"That's right," Kneer replied.
King consulted a city directory.

Small Boys Startled
With Finding of Skull
Portland (U.R) Two small
boys were startled yesterday
when they found a human skull
in a small cave while playing in
a wooded area off the Carver
Estacada road near Deep Creek
about 10 miles east "of here.
State Policeman Bob Patter
son said there were no marks '
that would indicate foul play but
that technicians at , the police
crime laboratory would examine
the skull.
