here today.
Two boys have
launched an
"Anti -Davy
Crockett' club.
This move

Aline Mosby w a s hatched
over bicycles and spraying hoses
on a hot afternoon down the
street from some friends of mine.
When word filtered through
the palm trees of this simmering
plot 1 crept into the circle to
report on the conspirators.
The leaders of the insurgents
are Anthony Wilde, 11, and
Hillary Silver, 10.
They are collecting neighbor
hood anti-D.C. members because:
1. Davy was a low-living gam
bler and a drinking man and not
"as perfect as Disney says."
2. It was all a commercial plot
to get kids to buy coonskin caps,
anyway.
"We"re starting a club and
Hilary's cousin in Salinas, Calif.,
already has one," reported young
Wilde.
They Don'l Swallow It
"No man is that good. Davy
is just a superman in a coon
skin cap and we don't swallow
that stuff. It's nothin' the way
he really was.
"Disney said he died last in
the Alamo!" continued Anthony.
"Actually the whole battle was
a terrible military mistake.
"Davy used to gamble, we
learned in school. But Disney
shows him as such a clean guy,
discouraging gambling 'n every
thing. Nobody could be that
good. My dad's great but he gets
traffic tickets sometimes."
Hillary further orated that the
real Crockett "knocked out guys
and cheated people out of
money."
"How could he have killed a
bear when he was three?" snort
ed Hillary. "And he didn't grin
any ole' bear to death. Every
body in our school's against him.
Frankly, we're bored by Davy
Crocket.
Have to Buy Things
"The worse thing is you have
to buy things. Instead of kids
buying books out of their allow
ance, they have to buy hats. If
you don't buy one, you're an
oddball.
"The good pioneers are the

ones like Daniel Boone," added
Hillary as he peeled a grape
with grimy fingers. "He didn't
stand around and go to Con
gress. He went out and pioneer
ed." The programs and movies they
do like, they decided, are "Las
sie," "Shane," "The Kentuck
ian," "High Noon" and Edward
R. Murrow.
The kids' first job is to change
a proposed 'Davy Crockett High
school" here to "Albert Einstein
High school."
I inquired if members of the
anti-Davy Crockett group could
be identified by membership
buttons. "No!" screamed the
boys. "We don't want to buy anything!"
