Some Affect From Having
Grandpa in White House
Said Showing on Children
Washington U.R) Does hav
ins a grandfather in the White
House affect the raising of chil
dren? "It couldn't help but affect
them," says one who should
know Maj. John Eisenhower.
President and Mrs. Eisenhow
er's son talked about the prob
lem briefly with reporters Thurs
day. He did so at a news confer
ence he called to get "all the re
quests'' for pictures and inter
views satisfied at one blow.
In New Quarters
The young major and his wife
and three children David, 7,
Earbara Anne, 6, and Susan, 7'z
have just moved into new
quarters at nearby Fort Belvoir,
Va. His tour of duty there of

and is likely to last three years.
Maj. Eisenhower answered
questions for newsmen before

stand especially if you have kids
of your own. So if you'll fire
away with your questions at me,
we'll have picture-taking later."
He was asked if the fact that
their grandfather lived in the
White House affected the chil
dren. Maj. Eisenhower replied
that he and his wife, Barbara,
"have made every effort to keep
the spotlight to a minimum."
Has Some Effect
But, he said the "situation has
some effect, it couldn't help it."
He said the children see their
pictures in the paper and can't
help but absorb some of the

Storm in Japan
Tokyo --V.P.) A battery of
six U.S. atomic cannon landed
today on Okinawa and the Army
announced that atomic rocket
launchers would be sent to Ja
pan for their first deployment
in the Far East.
A political storm already was
brewing for the government of
Prime Minister Ichiro Hatoyama
over the impending arrival of
the rocket launchers, with So
cialists and left - wing groups
rallying to protest even though
atomic warheads might not be
present.
United States Prepared
An Army spokesman said de
ployment in the Far East of the
35-ton cannon and the "Honest
John" rocket launchers '"is evi
dence that the United States is
prepared to defend the free
world with the most modern
weapons in our arsenal."
A Washington announcement
said the atomic cannon and
rocket launchers had been as
signed to Far East stations. A
short time later the Army said
the 663rd Field Artillery Bat
talion equipped with six 280
millimeter guns landed today on
Okinawa. Some troops in the
battalion landed two weeks ago.
Another Army spokesman in
Tokyo disclosed that the 5th
Field Artillery Battery, equip
ped with six launchers which
fire "Honest John" rockets, will
be sent to Japan in the future.
The "Honest John" can be armed
with atomic warheads.
To Study Issue
Foreign Minister N a m o r u
Shigcmitsu was asked about the
report when he appeared before
a parliamentary committee to
day but he replied that he need
ed more time to study the issue
before answering questions.
Premier Hatoyama had said
previously he would have no ob
jection to the United States
stock-piling nuclear bombs in
Japan if the occasion warranted
it but that he expected to be
notified in advance.
The foreign office said the
U.S. government had not noti
fied Japan that the rocket unit
woud be stationed in Japan.
However the Army announce
ment, did not mention the storing
of any atomic warheads.
New England Notes
Polio Epidemic
Boston (U.R) Polio ap
proached epidemic proportions
in Boston today and the number
of cases in all of New England
was almost three times as great
as last year.
Dr. Roy F. Feemster, Massa
chusetts director of communi
cable diseases reported 191
cases of the disease in Boston
alone. For the six-state New
England area there were 528
cases compared with 178 at this
time a year ago.
"The situation in Boston is
not devastating but we are on
the threshhold of an epidemic,"
Feemster said.
Some Received Shots
He reported that 14 or 15 po
lio victims in Massachusetts had
received a single shot of Salk
vaccine.. Some 150,000 children
in the state received one shot
of the vaccine this spring.
Feemster said the outbreak in
dicates that a single shot of Salk
vaccine does not protect against
polio.
Nine polio patients in Boston
alone have died of the disease.
The latest victim was Charlotte
Maclnnes, 9, who died Thursday.
An initial shipment of 754,000
cubic centimeters of gamma
globulin arrived here Thursday
night. Thomas Stotler, state di
rector of the National Founda
tion for Infantile Paralysis, said
it will be available to anyone
exposed to polio and all preg
nant women.

mother of Burton W. Abbott.
Abbott's widowed mother,
Mrs. Elsie Abbott, disappeared
last Wednesday just before it
developed she might be able to
give vital testimony in the
Stephanie Bryan case.
"We want her testimony,"
Coakley said after yesterday's

Her body was found July 20
near the Wildwood, Trinity
county, cabin owned by Ab
bott's brother-in-law.
Discovery of Purse
Coakley had planned to ask
the Grand Jury to indict Ab
bott for murder today. But testi
mony before the jury by Otto
Dezman, a friend of the Abbott
family and employer of the sus
pect's wife, Georgia. 32, gave
him reason to wish for a delay.
The elder Mrs. Abbott's story
would concern the finding of
Stephanie's red leather purse in

Dezman said the tone of the.

Mrs. Abbott was living in her
son's home until Tuesday. Then
she went to stay with an aunt,
Mrs. Nona Marsh. Mrs. Marsh
