Snake Finds Adage About Two Heads
Being Better Not Necessarily True
San Diego, Calif. (U.R) The
old theory that two heads are
better than one may be true
but not as far as snakes are con
cerned.
For almost two years, C. B.
Perkins, who is in charge of rep
tiles at the San Diego Zoo,..has
been working with a two-headed
snake. He has found that caring
for it calls for some double
domed thinking on his part.
Known as Duplex
The Snake, which goes under
the monicker of Duplex, has two
normal heads which are com
pletely separated. They are join
ed to a single body by a common
vertebral column about half an
inch behind the rear of the heads.
Life with two heads can be
rather trying at times, even for
a snake. Feeding time, for ex
ample, poses the problem of
which head is going to eat the
dinner for the single body.
Duplex seems to have a very
normal snake mind in each of
his heads. Usually at feeding
time, however, the right head is
more dominant than the left. But
sometimes, there is an argument
over chow.
Quarreled Over Mouse
On one occasion, the two
headed snake was offered a fat
mouse. The left head, which us
ually passes up such dainties,
grabbed the mouse by the head.
The right head immediately
grabbed the mouse by the tail
and the two heads started a
hassle over who was going to do
the swallowing. Eventually, the
snake put its heads together,
mulled it over and decided to
share the mouse.
Skin shedding, a normal pro
cess in a snake's life, generally
is difficult for Duplex because
of the forking of his two short
necks for the single body.
On one occasion when Duplex
was observed unbuttoning his
skin, the right head initiated the
action. The right head worked
hard at it until it reached the
point where the two heads are
joined. Then it knocked off the
job for a while. Four hours later,
the left head joined the party,
doffing its skin until it reached
the junction point.
Heads Work Together
A few hours later, both heads
got in gear and worked together
until the skin went the way of
all flesh.

Robert Frost, 81-year-old dean

at a desk while writing verse.
And he scorns the typewriter.
He writes longhand on paper
resting on a simple board held
up in front of him by a walking
stick. "Anything I write I could
write standing on my head,"
says Frost.

one else yawn and then yawned
himself can sympathize with an
other problem of the two-headed
snake. Not so long ago, the left
head of Duplex opened its mouth
and gave out with a wide and
lazy yawn. The right head ob
served the action and followed
with a yawn which rivaled that
of the left head.
Zoo officials say it only goes
to show that perhaps yawns are
just as contagious in two-headed
snakes as they are in human beings.
Moscow Radio Joins
International Hookup
London (U.R) Moscow
Radio joined an international
hookup Thursday night for the
first time since the start of the
cold war, but it required two
conferences at the summit to
arrange it.
The first was the Geneva con
ference itself which brought a
request from the British Broad
casting Corporation to Moscow
Radio to join London, New
York, Paris and Bonn in a pro
gram called "After Geneva."
The head of the Moscow Radio
telephoned the BBC and de
manded to talk with Sir Ian
Jacob, the BBC director-general,
shortly- before the program was
to go on the air. He agreed to
participate if BBC promised not
to cut the Moscow script. BBC
promised.

Among the Merried
Every husband should know
the sizes his wife takes in vari
ous articles of apparel. If he
doesn't it indicates he doesn't
love his matrimonial mate. So
says a feminine commentator.
She may be right as to hosiery
and glove size. However, some
of the feminine apparel size sys
tems are too complicated for the
average man to understand or
remember. For example you see
a reference to dress sizes such
as "10-18 misses' and "16-44
women." What's the difference
between a 16 size "miss" and a 16

Get It Right
In figuring typing speed on
the basis of number of words
per minute, the "typing word"
is five letters. This includes
spacing. For example, the three
words "on the top" would figure
as two typing words.
Flooring Gene
Jack Dempsey was the only
fighter to floor Gene Tunney.
That's what I said. It was wrong.
Harry Greb had Gene on the
canvas. Now a Marylander says
a battler named Fay Kaiser also
floored Tunney. -I can find no
record of this. In fact, I sec no
mention of a fighter named
Kaiser in records available to
me.

Do you know a couple with
an all-boy family who greatly
desire a daughter? How far will
they go to get a girl in the fam

Mr. and Mrs. Emory Harrison of
Johnson City, Tenn.? The Har

daughter for many years. They
now have 13 sons and no daugh

to 21.

As asked just where Rudy
Vallee made his Broadway bow.
It was at a small night spot called
the Heigh-Ho Club. Rudy, a Yale
graduate, and seven other sons
of old Eli had a band which was
billed at the Heigh-Ho as "Rudy
Vallee and the Connecticut
Yankees." Vallee is still going
strong as an entertainer but I
don't know what became of the
seven other "Connecticut Yan

It was none other than Blanche

titled "Come Josephine in My
