No Hells Canyon
Action Scheduled
Washington (U.R) Chair
man Claire Engle (D-Calif.) said
today no meeting of the House
Interior Committee to act on a
bill for Federal development of
Hells Canyon is "scheduled or
contemplated."
The bill authorizing the con
troversial dam on the Snake
river was approved by the recla
mation subcommittee yesterday,
putting it before the full com
mittee. Engle indicated no meeting is
in prospect. Asked the signifi
cance of the subcommittee ac
tion, he said it meant only that
the bill "moved one step for
ward." A Senate bill to authorise the
project is in a parallel position.
It has subcommittee approval
but reportedly is a vote short of
the full committee endorsement.
Meanwhile, an author of the
house legislation called the
House subcommittee action a
"signal victory" for public power
advocates seeking to block plans
of a private power company to
develop the canyon.
The Idaho Power Company is
seeking Federal Power Com
mission licenses for three dams
on the river.
Rep. Don Magnuson (D-Wash.)
said the subcommittee action
"certainly should cause the com
mission to delay a decision until
Congress acts on the project."
Turncoat's Wife
Awaits Arrival
Olympia, Wash. (U.R) With
a vow to 'stick by him" the
wife of turncoat soldier Otho
Bell and the couple's four-year-old
daughter Paula, awaited
their departure tonight for San
Francisco and tomorrow's re
union with "daddy."
Jewel Bell was scheduled to
leave from the Seattle-Tacoma
Airport, according to United Air
Lines, and will arrive in San
Francisco tomorrow at 4:05 a.m.
She will be met in San Fran
cisco by her brother, an airman
at the Parks Air Force Base.
Then she will go to the port to
await Bell's arrival. He and two
other turncoats are aboard the
President Cleveland.
Tonight's trip will be Mrs.
Bell's first plane ride and she is
a little nervous about that. An
other first will be the meeting
of Paula and her father. The girl
was born after Bell went over
seas. He and 21 other American sol
diers defected after their cap
ture by the Communists during
the Korean fighting.
Bell, along with William
Cowart and Lewis Griggs, face
court martial. The three decided
the American way of life was
better than life in Communist
China even in the face of possi
ble prison terms.
Safely, Effectiveness
Of Salk Vaccine Hit
Cambridge, Mass. (U.R)
A polio expert said Wednesday
night there is no clear cut evi
dence that Salk polio vaccine is
both safe and effective.
The expert, Dr. David Rut
stein, of the Harvard Medical
school, said he was in complete
agreement with British expert
Dr. Graham S. Wilson regarding
Salk vaccine.
Wilson recently cancelled the
Salk polio inoculation program
in England. He was quoted as
saying he did not believe there
is any way to make Salk vaccine
safe.
Rutstein gave his views in an
interview by Joseph A. Del Por
to, chairman of the Boston Uni
versity School of Journalism.
"There is no clear cut evi
dence at this date that you can
consistently produce polio vac
cine by the Salk method that is
both safe and effective," Rut
stein said.
Klamath Potato Crop
Recovered From Setbacks
Klamath Falls (U.R) The i
county extension service here:
reported today that the Klamath i
Basin potato crop has greatly
recovered from setbacks caused :
by last month's unseasonal!
frosts. !
Area potato crops were delay-,
ed three weeks by the weather,
the service said. However, most
potato farmers in the basin felt.
that with favorable weather i
through mid-September, the crop
would equal last year's.
FIRM OPENING Peck Bros., a large auto accessory warehousing
and distributing firm, this week opens its branch in Medford.
An open house is being held at the new building from 9 a.m. to 6
p.m. both Friday and Saturday, with prizes, favors, balloons and
refreshments. Demonstrations of tire recapping will be given in
what the firm says is "the newest and most modern recapping
plant on the Pacific coast." Members of the board of directors
of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce lunched there
yesterday, and city and county officials inspected the plant earlier
in the week. Above, left to right, are Harold Gregory, Medford
manager; L. D. Wagner, Portland manager of the firm; Mayor
Earl Miller, John Pletsch, president of the chamber; County
Judge Rodney Keating, and E. W. Peck, president of the firm.
Shown are the first tires out of the new recapping molds. The
building, at 2850 Crater Lake highway, is shown below.
Former Paratrooper and Father of Two, Now
Becomes Bride of Los Angeles Man in Reno
Woman,
Ceremony
Sacramento (U.R) The mar
riage of a former paratrooper,
who claimed he had become a
woman through sex surgery, to
a movie make-up man was dis
closed today.
The Tnde was Tamara Edel
Rees, 31, who, as a man, fathered
two children and made four
jumps behind enemy lines as a
paratrooper in World War II.
Tamara claimed that an opera
tion in Amsterdam, Holland, in
1954 changed her into a woman.
The bride, now making a se
ries of "psychological" lectures
in California, confirmed the
marriage and identified the
bridegroom as J. E. Courtland,
III. The marriage took place Sat
urday in Reno, she said.
Not Love at First Sight
"It was not a case of love at
first sight," the former twice
decorated GI explained.
In taking out a marriage li
cense in Reno, Courtland gave
his age as 29 and his home as
Charlotte, N.C. He said he had
been married previously but
that his wife was dead.
Tamara listed Los Angeles as
her home and said she had not
been married previously.
Washoe County Clerk Harry
K. Brown said that as far as he
could ascertain, the marriage
was fully legal.
"We never heard of anything
like this before," Brown de
clared. "As long as they come in
with a dress on, we figure
they're women and issue them a
marriage license if they want
one."
No Specific Law
Nevada has no specific stat
utes covering the subject al
though it does have a law say
ing marriages can be annulled
if they are not consummated.
The minister who performed
the ceremony declared "We had
no inkling there was anything
irregular with the marriage."
"But from my point of view
as a minister, I would not marry
anyone who had undergone sex
experimentation. I would not
have done it."
The minister added he knew
of no church regulations that
would have any effect upon the
marriage since it had been per
formed in regular fashion.
Courtland, who is accompany
ing his bride on the lecture tour
as business manager, was not
immediately available for com
ment. Prominent Family
A former roommate of the
bridegroom's in Los Angeles
identified him as a make-up man
and hair stylist who until three
weeks ago had worked for 20th
Century Fox in Hollywood. The
roommate said Courtland was a
naval reservist and was expected
to be recalled to active duty in
September. He said Courtland
was a member of a socially
prominent family in Charlotte,
N.C.
"My family has been told of
the marriage and are very happy
for me." Tamara said. "Jim's
father is dead, and his mother
doesn't know of the wedding
yet."
Tamara said she met Court
land at a house party given by
mutual friends in Los Angeles
last January. She left her par
ents' home here and moved to
Los Angeles about 18 months
ago, shortly after her sex trans
ition, charging she had become
the target of "malicious pub
licity." In Los Angeles, Courtland's
former roommate, who asked
that his identity be withheld,
said he introduced the couple
and was "quite surprised" to
hear of their marriage.
Cam for Permanent
The roommate, a student
worker at a beauty school, said
he introduced Courtland to Ta
mara. He met her, he said, when
she came to the school to get a
permanent.
The former GI and Courtland
were married in the Reno par
sonage of the Rev. Stephen
Thomas, a Methodist minister.
Tamara, as Robert Rees, was
married to a North Carolina
girl from whom he was divorced
in 1946. They had two children.
During her theater appear
ances here, Tamara has adver
tised her lectures as "for women
only." During her tour through
Northern California in recent
months, she spoke to separate
groups of men and women. She
describes her subject as "straight
psychology."
Civil .Defense Head
Wants Military Help
In H-Bomb Attack
Washington U.R) Civil De
fense Administrator Val Peter
son said today he would like to
have military help in .event of
H-bomb attack.
In an interview on the decis
ion of several other nations to
turn civil defense responsibility
over to the military, Peterson
expressed a desire that:
1. All draftees be trained in
civil defense work.
2. Military reservists serve in
civil defense. Time spent in civil
defense would count toward re
tirement from the reserves.
Wants Guard Aid
3. National Guard ground ele
ments be keDt under state juris
diction for "a few weeks" after
an emergency to help with civil
defense ODerations. After the im
mediate mergency they would
be transferred to combat duty.
4. Some units of the regular
military establishment be made
available for civil defense work
If atomic or hydrogen attack
wipes out most of a city's popu
lation, Peterson said, it also will
wipe out most of the civil de
fense workers.
This would make it necessary
to move in trained fire fighters
and first aid and rescue teams
as soon as possible.
Portland Traction Loses..
In Plan To Cut Service
Salem iU.PJ Public Utilities
Commissioner Charles Heltzel
yesterday signed an order which
directed the Portland Traction
Company to abandon a proposal
to reduce passenger service on
interurban runs until an investi
gation is completed.
The company had proposed to
reduce service August 14 be
tween Portland and Oregon
City.
Heltzel said a hearing dale
would be set later.
"Assuming there is a nuclear
attack on the United States," he
said, "we must use all the tools
at hand to meet the situation."
Peterson said he and his aides
are carefully studying programs
in Great Britain, Norway, Swe
den and Denmark where the
military is being given civil de
fense responsibility.
Youths Conscripted
The Scandinavian countries
conscript youths into their civil
defense organizations.
Great Britain is creating 48
battalions of 600 men each for a
"Mobile Defense Corps," trained
and equipped to move into the
destruction and chaos of a city
blasted by an H-bomb.
Peterson said a lot of ap
proaches are under consideration
here. Virtually all of them re
quire special training, he said.
He described his remarks about
military help as "expressing desires."
Thieves Only Losers
In Jewelry Store Theft
Detroit U.R) Two thieves
had an almost foolproof plan for j
stealing watches from a jewelry
store Wednesday one was to
distract the jeweler by having
his watch repaired while the
other filled his pockets with
new watches from, the show
case. But the jeweler's wife inter
rupted the man who was pilfer
ing the showcase, police said,
and both thieves fled leaving
the loot and their own watch as
well.
