Cheney Studs Face Lumberjacks
Here This Wednesday, Thursday
The Coos Bay-North Bend Lum
berjacks will" boast the more im
pressive record but the Medford
Cheney Studs still will be intent
on extending a current victory
streak when the two baseball
aggregations scrap in a pair of
non-loop tussles Wednesday and
Thursday nights at the fair
grounds ball yard here.
Each contingent has played 29
games this year. The Lumber
jacks now own a mark of 22 vic
tories against seven setbacks.
Medford now stands with a per
formance of 17 victories, 11
losses and one tie. But the Studs
have won their last six in a row.
All of the wins in the current
string have come since Jack
Cooney took the player mana
gerial reins and the Studs will
be battling hard to extend the
streak. The Cheney crew has
slapped out 78 hits during the
six-game victory parade.
The 'Jacks figure to be a big
assignment for the Southern
Oregon League club. Their line
up is studded with ex-pros and
outstanding former college play
ers. Coos Bay-North Bend, mem
ber of the former Southwestern
Oregon League along with Med
ford, stayed out of the Southern
Oregon when it was formed last
season rather than cut down on
its ex-pro talent. For the past
two years the Lumberjacks have
been playing independent ball.
Two former pros are on the
'Jacks' pitching staff. They are
Ward Rockey and Ray Stratton.
Rockey went to Washington
State college and played for
Spokane in the old Western In
ternational circuit and Stratton
was with Salem in the WIL. The
CB-NB roster lists Stratton as
the regular third baseman and
reserve pitcher but the Studs got
a sample of his pitching when he
was with Bandon here early in
the season. He held Medford to
three hits. '
Webb Pitches
Other chuckers are Ron Webb,
from Washington State, Jerry
Tulley, from El Camino junior
college, and Jack Hinkle, from
Eugene high.
The two catchers, Irv Roth
nd Dick Allison, both are ex
Willamette university men. Roth
has played in the California State
League and Allison for the Co
quille Loggers. First base men
are Jay Ragni. ex-Coast Leaguer
and former player for Spokane
in the WIL, and Jim Ruggles,
who has been a four-year varsity
man at Oregon State college.
Rusgles also is listed as an out
fielder. Second baseman is Gordy
Heisy, from Washington State.
Roy Nicely is shortstop. He has
been up to the majors and has
seen a number of Coast League
years. Most of his service was
with San Francisco. He is a
smooth fielder and was consid
ered one of the PCL's best.
In the outfield there are John
Xovenr, Dick Wenner and Bob
Hayes along with Ruggles. Ko
venz is ex-University of Oregon
and ex-WIL. He has been with
the 'Jacks for three years. Wen
ner played pro ball for Portland
'
IN STUDS' LINE-UP Terry
Maddox, above, is among the
Medford Cheney Studs players
slated to see duty against the
Coos Bay-North Bend Lumber
jacks at the fairgrounds here
Wednesday and Thursday nights.
He'll probably be in the outfield
but will be available for relief
pitching if needed. Terry was
No. 1 hurler for University of
Oregon this spring and was
named most valuable player on
the squad. The non-league base
ball games are slated for 8 p.m.
on both occasions.

United Press Sports Writer
San Diego's off-season post
man, Bill Thomason, rang the
bell last night with the finest
pitching stint of his career a
4 to 0, one-hit victory over Port
land. Thomason's victory, which
came in the seven-inning opener
of a scheduled double bill, was
spoiled only by Artie Wilson's
drag bunt in the sixth inning.
At that point, Thomason was
only four outs away from the
league's third no-hitter of the
season.
The second game was called
in the first inning because of
rain.
Despite the victory, the Pad
res merely kept pace in the
standings. League-leading Seat
tle maintained its four-game
lead with a 6 to 5 victory over
Sacramento in 11 innings.
In the other league game. Hol
lywood pushed over a run in
the bottom of the ninth to tie
the score, then edged San Fran
cisco 4 to 3 in 11 innings.
Oakland and Los Angeles
were idle.

by Beavers' centerfielder Carl

scoring Peterson moments later.
Red Adams was the loser.
Seattle's Bob Balcena proved
that error is human but retribu
tion is divine by singling home
the winning run against Sacra
mento. Balcena opened the flood
gates in the seventh inning by
dropping Al Heist's sacrifice fly
with the bases loaded. Two sin
gles and a sacrifice fly produced
a four-run Solon rally.
Bill Hall's sacrifice fly scored
the winning run against the
Seals, and Hollywood Manager
Bobby Bragan tried his six-man
infield again.
Hall's fly ball came off starter
and loser Jim Walsh with the
bases loaded after the Stars tied
up the game in the ninth on a
walk, a fielder's choice and Dick
Smith's single. Bragan employed
the six-man infield against
Walsh in the sixth inning by
pulling in an outfielder and
leaving a gap in centerfield.
Walsh, normally a weak hit
ter, slapped a double into the
gap coring Ted Beard and set
ting up another tally.
