Proposal That US, Efed China Conifer on Asian Matters Dulls Geneva Rainbow

United Press Correspondent
Washington (U.R) A power
f ully-uspported proposal that the
United States meet soon with
wmzm Red Ch,na. to
afc-V prevent a ctan-
gerous Asiatic
flareup dulled
today's Geneva
rainbow.
This was a
grim reminder
that half the
world and mul
ti - millions of
persons were
excluded from
the Big Four summit. The pro
posal boldly underlined the
parting words of Soviet Premier
Nikolai Bulganin about the prob
lem of Red China:
"We shall never escape these
problems."
Chairman Walter F. George
of the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee called for the meet
in? with Red China Sunday
night.
He said it should be at the
foreign minister level after Con
gress adjourns and much sooner
than a suggested six months.
Elaborating his ideas to the
United Pres., George indicated
he advanced the idea because
of "some information" he had
obtained independently from
Chinese and India sources. In
dia's roving Ambassador V. K.
Krishna Mcnon was a recent
visitor to Washington, presum
ably seeking some such arrange
ment. George told the United
Press he hoped a meeting could
be limited to the United States
and Red China.
"I Hope So'
Asked if he had reason to be
lieve Red China and the U. S.
might actually meet. George re
plied: "I hope so." Delay would
be dangerous, he continued, be
cause trouble between National
ist and Red China over off-shore
islands was sure otherwise to
come.
The State Department had no
immediate comment. The force
of the Georgia Democrat's pro
posal can be measured by the
impact of his call last March
for a Big Four meeting at the
summit the genial conference
from which President Eisenhow
er returned in hopeful mood
Sunday.
But there was no evidence
that the administration soon
would be swung by George to
a huddle with the Red Chinese.
On the contrary, President Eis
enhower banned discussion of
Asiatic questions at Geneva and
got away with it, although the
Russians expressed regret.
As one of many ultimate spon
sors of the Geneva meeting,
George applauded its results
Sunday night. He went far be
yond Mr.' Eisenhower's cautious
optimism. Some may have been
startled by the chairman's be
lief there is a good chance of
settlement of the German ques
tion this year.
Are Reds Slill Smiling?
There seemed small chance
of that so soon on the basis of
joint and individual statements
as the Big Four scattered over
the week end to their home
capitals. It remains to be learned
whether the Soviet Russian dele
gation was still smiling and
friendly as it faced north and
east toward Moscow.
It is no reflection on George
to report that a U. S. meeting
with Red China would please
the Kremlin, if anything would,
nor that the record indicates that
Mr. Eisenhower will not quickly
go along with his good friend
and frequent Senate champion.
Senator George.
The President is well placed
to balk. He has returned from
Geneva with new prestige at
home and abroad. He stole the
Geneva show, or most of it. And
if it comes to be that his plan
for an exchange of defense blue
prints with the Soviets was only
propaganda, after all, it still
is echoing like the shot heard
'round the world. It was one
of Mr. Eisenhower's purposes
to make good propaganda for
the United States at Geneva, and
he seems to have brought it off.

Last Yacht Crosses Race Finish Line
Honolulu (U.R) The 1955
transpacific yacht race was com
pleted yesterday when the last
entry, the 36-foot schooner Sea
Mist sailed past the finish line
to a reception of lettuce, milk
and martinis.
The milk and martinis were
brought by friends to cheer the
five-man crew after their 20-day
cruise.
The lettuce? That was because
skipper Elmer Hitchcock and
his brother, navigator Leroy
Hitchcock, own a lettuce farm
in Salinas. Calif.
Hitchcock said he had no par
ticular trouble during the race,
but his craft was slowed once
bv a three-day calm.

written exclusively for the United

By HILLEVI ROMBIN
Written for the United Press
Long Beach, Calif . (U.R) I
dreamed about winning the title
of Miss Universe.
But I never thought it would
ever become a reality. It's the
grandest thing that ever has
happened to me.
With all this excitement
around me, I often have to pinch
myself to see if I am still dream
ing. It's all so wonderful.
Parents, Fiance Thrilled
My parents in Stockholm are
thrilled about my good fortune.
So is my fianec, Lt. Nils Benker
of the Swedish Air Force.
My beautiful sapphire ring
it is Nils' present to me. He is
a wonderful man. We hope to
be married in the near future,
but we have not yet set the date.
I am grateful for the way the
American people have received
my victory. And I am proud
that I have been called a sym
bol of Swedish womanhood.
This international pageant has
been a great experience for me.
I have made many friends from
many countries. I only wish
each of the girls had won. But
as there is only one Miss Uni
verse, this would be impossible.
Director Praised
I would like to say a word
of praise for Mr. Oscar Mein-
hardt (executive director of the
pageant) and all the other won
derful people who made this
contest possible. My honest
opinion is that this type of com
petition does a great deal to
ward furthering international
understanding and good will.
All of the girls have gotten
along together wonderfully. I
am certain that each will return
