Oldsters Irked
The program was the brain
child of a triumvirate embrac
ing the Junior Chamber of Com
merce chapters co-sponsored by
the Liberty Mutual Insurance
Company and the American
Trucking Association.
The "Road-e-o" was organized
after a Jaycee safety meeting in
St. Paul, Minn., late in 1951. The
national competition started in
1952. The founders of the pro
gram were concerned because
elders on the roads were irked
by the cutting in and out of traf
fic and speeding by kid drivers.
They figured that if a young
man or young lady could learn
how to handle the wheel and the
footworks of a car, he or she
would be no more of a menace
than experienced drivers. More
important, the reflexes of the
young are more pliable.
Better driving for longer liv
ing (although it never came out
in that sort of a slogan) doubt
less was the motive.
Anyhow, today the idea has
spread across the nation and also
to Hawaii and Canada. Thou
sands of youngsters who don't
get into the big show here have
a go at learning courtesy of the
road and the rules of safety. They
practice in lots where no harm
can be done. A chance to get
some higher learning in the form
of scholarships is a fine goal for
all.
