Excavation Project
Nears Completion
North of Ashland
Ashland Workmen of the
Eugene firm of Miller and Strong
are nearing the end of excava
tion for a new railroad bridge
over Highway 99 going into Ash
land from Medford, according to
the Ashland Tidings.
The project, to be completed
in late September, contains a
divider in the new highway to
go under the Southern Pacific
railroad. A four-lane highway
will continue from the present
four-lane road in front of the
O. K. Rubber Welders on Bil
lings hill to about Sherdan st.,
where it will narrow to two
lanes. Widening the highway on
the Ashland side of the bridge
will be the final phase of con
struction. To Us Present Bridge
Few changes will be made In
the present bridge. The new
bridge will be constructed just
to the east. A concrete abutment
being rebuilt will act as the di
vider between the two bridges.
The new and the present high
way will curve in order to pass
under the bridge. They will
come together again between the
bridge and Ashland Mine rd.
The new road may be ready
for use early in September and
completed by the end of the
month.
Bandleader Seeks
His Old Clarinet
Benny Goodman, famed clari
netest and band leader, has
asked for help from the Music
Mart in locating a clarinet he
once owned, according to Ron
Rice, manager.
Goodman, now in Hollywood,
is looking for a clarinet he used
to make the original recordings
of his theme song, "Let's
Dance," Rice said.
Rice was contacted by Good
man through Henri Selmer of
Paris, France. Selmer is the
maker for the clarinet, and al
though Goodman has newer clar
inets by the same maker, he
wants this particular instrument
for a movie showing 1935-36
scenes. The serial number of
the clarinet is No. L3682. It is
17 key, six ring Selmer model.
If found by Aug. 31, the owner
will be presented with a $500
Selmer omega clarinet in re
turn for the loan of the older
instrument for a few weeks, Rice
added.
"Goodman does not have any
recollection of where he traded
the instrument, but believes that
it was on the west coast," Rice
said.
Bank Official Slated

dinner meeting of the Medford
chapter of the National Office
Managers association Monday.
McNeill will speak on person
nel relations. Elwood Hedberg,
manager of the Medford branch
First National Bank, will be a
guest of the association.

BOY SHOT IN HEAD
Port Orchard, Wash. (U.R)
A 13-year-old Port Orchard
youth accidentally was shot be
tween the eyes Thursday while
playing with a .22 caliber rifle
with his cousin. Kitsap county
sheriff's officers said David
Whidby, who already was blind
in one eye. was taken to Tacoma
General hospital for surgery.
Attendants said the boy's condi
tion is good. Sheriff's deputies
said it hasn't been determined
whether young Whidby, or his
13-year-old cousin, Mike Moore,
was holding the rifle when it
went off.
