Buried Treasure
Irish Glassware With
Marking Declared Rare
Old man O'Flaherty grabbed
me by the arm while young Tom
got a decanter of Irish whiskey
and some glasses from the pan
try. "I won't drop the decanter . ..
can't . . . That's why they have
rings on the neck," he said,
pointing to the rings of raised
glass on the neck which he
seized and began to pour. "See,
your fingers can't slip."
The thought intrigued me. I
had often wondered about the
rings on decanter necks and
complimented him on his logical
explanation.
"That's the way it is with
most Irish decanters," he said,
-of the old ones such as we
used to get in grandfather's
time when the Irish exported
vast quantities of glassware to
the United States. . ."
MEXICAN STAMP MEMENTO
"I've got only one stamp in
my collection," said Carlos, tak
ing a plastic folder out of his
pocketbook and handing It to
me. "This is it."
I looked at the stamp. It was
a Mexican five-peso item with a
picture of the Cathedral of
Mexico under the word COR
REOS and over the legend:
"Cinco MEXICO pesos." Though
it was unused, it was overprint
ed with the words GOBIERNO
CONSTITUCIONALISTA, and
there was also a monogram on it
that looked like a C and a G
superimposed on a M. In fact,
the stamp had just about every
thing. The stamp happened to be
one that I had some idea of the
EARLY ADVERTISING TOKENS
"This is my lucky day," said
Ted, a coin dealer friend of
mine. "It's due to a buy I had
the good fortune to make yes
terday. This one here," and he
pointed to a small tray on which
lay 10 Spanish two-reales pieces.
I looked at the coins careful
ly as they lay against the black
velvet cover of the tray. They
were ordinary pieces as such
things go nothing for anyone
to get excited about, particular
ly a dealer such as Ted. In fact,
they weren't particularly old,
none of them being earlier than
1700.
"I bought the lot from an old
fellow who came in yesterday.
Gave him $2 for them."
"All right," I said. "Where
does the good luck come in. This
Spanish silver wouldn't bring
you a profit of more than $5 in
two years."

As he spoke, he picked up the
decanter, tipped it to one side
and pointed out the words on the
bottom, "Cork Glass Co."
Recalling that much of the
Irish glass was not marked
most of. it, in fact I asked if
he knew the value of his piece.
"Chiefly sentimental," he said.
"It couldn't be much else and
stay around here for long." Tom
agreed. I decided to say nothing
more until I had looked it up.
What I learned next day was
this. If you have any old decant
ers marked like the above, or
with names such as "Waterloo
Co., Cork," or "Cork Glass Co.,"
you're in. So far, since learning
how rare his decanter is. O'Fla
herty has refused two offers for
it, one for $300, and the other
$1,500.

value. Nonetheless, I decided to
check it and took it out to the
club library where some cata
logues were available.
When I returned a few min
utes later, I explained to Carlos
that I had been curious about
checking my knowledge of Mex
ican issues and had just discover
ed that the stamp was worth
S100, considerably more than I
had expected. If he would like
to get rid of it, I would be glad
to take it off his hands.
Carlos shook his head as he
took back the stamp.
"This is all I've got left of
those days with Villa and his
Dorados his golden ones
except my memories. And I'm
going to keep it till I die."
LIKE SPANISH REALES
Ted asked me to turn over
the coin with the date of 1722.
The date was punched deep be
tween the words "Rex" and
"Hispaniarm."
On the other side, instead of
the bust of some Spanish sover
eign or the castles of Castile, I
saw a stolid Anglo-Saxon ad
vertising message. In the center
were the words, "North Beach
Haven, New Jersey." Around
them, in a circle, were more let
ters spelling out the legend
GUARANTEE DEVELOPMENT
CO.
"It's one of the early merchant
tokens that hundreds of firms
put out in this country during
the years from 1789 to 1850,"
said Ted. "But what tickles me
is that this old New Jersey item
is one of the rarest, and I've
just been offered $100 for it."

Valuable Machinery
The machinery purchased has

Plans are now being drawn

'Glass Rat' Helps in
Davis, Calif. (U.R) A "glass
rat," whose only real internal or
gan is the liver, is being used
here to study cirrhosis and other
liver diseases.
A complex contraption of glass
and rubber tubing is used to
keep a rat"s liver about the
size of a silver dollar alive for
up to 30 hours.
Dr. Ralph W. Brauer, German
born physiologist, is the inventor
and the man who nicknamed the
device "glass rat." Brauer is
head of the pharmacology branch
of the naval radiological defense
laboratory, San Francisco. He
moved his work here to the Uni
versity of California campus of
veterinary science.
The trouble with studying the
liver under normal circum
stances, is this when the liver
is ailing, other organs of the
body come to its rescue. By
studying a liver independent of
such help, Brauer and other sci
entists hope to pinpoint the real
causes of liver malfunctions.
Other devices have been con-
of house and marine paints for
export to South America and
elsewhere.
Arrangements have been
made with a trucking firm to
transport the machinery to Med
ford within the next two weeks,
Taylor added. The local factory
has been manufacturing and
selling their own brand of "Gold-
en West"' paints since April 1.

A small yalved pump serves as
a "heart" and the gadget has a

rests in a cup-shaped bed. A
small duct takes away the bile
production which is measured
and analyzed.
"Lunch here," said Brauer, "is

sugar and other blood foods
being conducted through the
tubes to the living liver.
