Washington's Birthday Is
Remembered by Operator
Rochester, N. Y. (U.R)
Charles E. Dean has more rea
son to remember George Wash
ington's birthday than most peo
ple. On Feb. 22, 1951, the 72-year-old
elevator operator was struck
and injured by a left-turning
automobile at a downtown inter
section. .'
Four years later, on the same
date and at the same hour Dean
was hit by a left-turning car at
the same spot. Both times he
was on his way to dinner, but
the second time he suffered
more severe injuries and had
to be hospitalized for a time.

Remember Youth
And Understand
Brookings, S. D. (U.R) An
expert suggests that parents can
better understand the actions
of their children by recalling
the memories of their own child
hood. Mrs. Merle Gunsalus, a fam
ily life specialist of the South
Dakota state college extension
service, said that parents have
within their own resources and
personal experiences many of
the facts and understandings
needed to help their youngsters.
"Remembering how we felt
and reacted to things in our
own childhood and youth," Mrs.
Gunsalus said, "gives us under
standing for the how and why
of the actions of our children.
"An honest attempt to see
things on the child's level will
very often give us the different
slant we need because we have
been giving consideration only
from the adult viewpoint."
Mrs. Gunsalus said that all
parents are confronted with
more-or-less the same problems
over a period even though they
will vary jn severity and form.
"This is true," she said, "be
cause children are alike in many
ways although they are separate
personalities, each with strong
individual differences and vary
ing needs."
However, she cautioned par
ents to remember that solutions
to problems might work one
time and not . work another
time.
