The average housewife has a
53-hour working week. Just
about eight hours daily. Of
course, it would be much longer
were it not for the innumerable
clever labor saving gadgets now
available. In addition to that
the help the loving husbands
of modern housewives give them
must be considered. Were it not
for these two factors the average
housewife's working week might
be 80 or 90 hours.
Love Scenes
It is believed fatal to the ef
fect of a film love scene if the
actor is shorter than the actress.
When the male is shorter radical
steps must be taken to make the
female appear shorter than he
is. Discussing this situation
Doris Day said, "For a love
scene clinch with Gordon Mac-
Rae I have to take my shoes
off." That's how it goes in such
love scenes, the actress takes her
shoes off, the actor wears height
building shoes. However, I have
always thought a love story of a
tall girl and a shorter man could
be the basis of a highly enter
taining film. If such a picture
has already been made I missed
it.

Passing By
"Heinie" Groh. Picturesque
major leaguer of the yesteryear.
Famous for his bottle shaped bat.
'"Heinie" was one of the great
est leadoff men in major league
history. He was a very tough
man to pitch to . . . King Vidor.
Veteran Holly woodian. Has been
a director for about 40 years
First achieved notice with his
production of a film with a
Christian Science background
titled "The Turn in the Road."
This ran for nearly two years
in one theater in Los Angeles
Production cost was about S10,

based on Tolstoy's "War and
Peace," will cost at least S4,000,
000 to produce!
Noise
To what extent are you pes
tered by horn-happy autoists?
Do you frequently have drivers
signal to neighbors by loud and
repeated horn blowing? In New
York a driver can be arrested
for that. It is a violation of an
ordinance directed against the
making of excessive noise. Last
year over 4.000 persons were ar
rested in New York City for
making unnecessary noise and
most of them were loud auto
horn blowers.
Speed Register
Suppose you know you have
been going less than 50 miles an
hour in your motor car and are,
therefore, within the speed limit.
Then a traffic officer stops you
and says you have been going
over 60 miles an hour. What can
you do about it? It is his word
against yours. Once more I sug
gest some inventive genius
strive to originate a registering
device which will record at
what speed an automobile is
traveling at all times. That is a
printed record. That should not
be so difficult for a smart in
ventor to figure out.
Forgotten Woman
There are repeated references
to "forgotten men." How about
the "forgotten women?" For ex
ample, how about Bess Cary?
She was the inspiration for the
origin of one of the world's
greatest participant sports. That
is, outboard motor boating. Ole
Evinrude was inspired to invent
the outboard motor because he
was tired of rowing Bess on Ahe
Kinnickinnic River, Wis. Ole
married, Bess and she was a ma
jor factor in his latersuccess.

the town, on the edge of the
