IT'S ELEMENTARY. WATSON
A lady has a rash on neck and
back. She has spent the usual
small fortune for treatment
without benefit.
Phenomenal how such expen
ditures grow as time passes:
Long ago when I was an honest
doctor in Penn Yan this ap
proach by a new patient filled
me with dismay, for I found
that in such cases I had just one
crack at it, and if I failed, that
was all. But then, on the other
hand, even if by happy coinci
dence' the trouble had run its
course just as the patient came
to me, the chances were the pa
tient would decide it must have
been a trivial ailment and I had
a lot of cheek to charge $2.
Please write on Allergy and
Air Conditioning, the lady re
quests. Calcicaps, three a day,
have done her tremendous good.
No more does she have hay fever
or asthma, except in an air-conditioned
place. Thanking me for
her extreme good health she is
mine sincerely ...
By quick reflex action I man
aged to hold back from the
chucker most of the lady's let
ter. That extraordinary allergy
with air conditioning I must
have read it too hurriedly. No,
that's what the lady says she is
free from hay. fever or asthma
except in an air-conditioned
place.
Normally we would expect an
individual with allergy to be less
miserable in air-conditioned en
vironment than elsewhere, or at
any rate net more miserable.
But this lady asserts that she
no longer has hay fever or
asthma anywhere else!
Oh-h. Now I notice that the
chucker didn't chew off the first
part of the letter, about the rash
on neck and back.
From its distribution it sounds
like an allergic rash, caused by
proximity to some plant such as
primrose, or poisoning by hair
dye or by dyed fur. If the hay
fever or asthma is due to plant
allergy the plant responsible
may be in or near the air-conditioned
place.
It would not be difficult to
solve the mystery by observation
of the lady s habits and envir
onment. But the nature of al
lergy remains obscure. No one
has come up with an explanation
of the susceptibility of a mino
rity of persons and the immunity
of the majority to allergic
troubles. No eminent medical
authority, that is.
The one-horse-and-buggy doc
tor who conducts this column be
lieves calcium deficiency has a
good deal to do with it.
Ask in writing, signed, for the
pamphlet Relief of Allergy, and
inclose stamped, self, addressed
envelope. If you would like also
a pamphlet on Asthma, or one
on Hay Rever or one on Hives,
or one on Eczema, inclose 10c
for each additional one.
More and more growing child
ren and adults suffer from cal
cium deficiency nowadays be
cause the everyday diet doesn't
include enough milk but does in
clude far too much pap and
cheat food.

Answer Thank you' Ma'am. The
trouble was probably tetany. A nutri

therefor most doctors fail to recog

about it anyway. For instructions send
stamped, self-addressed envelope and
ask for pamphlet on ADULT TETANY.
